There are plenty of reasons to have a second knife. Your second knife can be a smaller knife you can open, use, and close quickly without scaring non knife people, or lend to someone instead of lending them your sebenza, or perhaps your second knife is the ubiquitous sak. Personally, I'm all for carrying a small budget knife just for those situations.

@@Jake-bt3fcI'm a 52yr old working carpenter. I use my pocket knife at work as a draw knife, occasionally. I carry a small block planer in my pouches but, sometimes, the pocket knife just works better. I also keep a utility knife in my pouches. It all comes down to what works for you. I also carry a Wave+ on my belt in a sheath. If I drop my belt, I've got a multi tool and a pocket knife. At 52, I drop my belt as frequently as possible.

One thing that bothers me a lot is when people say "I need a knife I can sharpen on a rock in the woods" When they're picking their EDC to take to the city every day. First of all, if you're that worried about the apocalypse buy a worksharp, buddy. Secondly, how do you expect to unexpectedly get stranded in the woods on your way to work?

I like to buy folders when I can spare the money to. I don't have a huge collection but I do have an appreciation for what I have. So I find myself carrying two at once lately. Is it necessary? Absolutely not, but it is so fun for me to use what I buy. I don't make enough money yet to just buy knives to "collect" and have them sit on shelf for spare use. So everyday I get to pick out two knives to enjoy and learn. The "learning" is just comparing two different knives to one task. This lets me feel how each knife might work better over another for my needs. This process, in turn, allows me to shop smarter for other knives because now I have a better gauge on what I would enjoy using. And ultimately I kinda just like to enjoy variety in my life. Anyways, thanks for uploading the video. It sparked comments, conversations, and personal musings on the topic.

As a carpenter, I carry one of my Spyderco Manix 2s for general use. I also have a swiss army knife OR Leatherman Wave as a backup, BUT not necessarily for the blade. The other tools on a multitool are far more useful for my needs than the extra blade is. Sometimes, a utility knife will join the mix if the cutting task involves highly abrasive materials or is done on a dirty surface. I have yet to encounter a situation that requires more than 1 edc knife, including possible self-defense scenarios, because I dont let my knives go dull and don't use them for prying, batoning, chopping, or anything else a folder shouldn't do.

First of all, as an avid watcher of the Torque Test Channel, I must say, that is an impressive lineup of drills and impact drivers. Second, I do carry a backup because there have been times when a buddy has borrowed my main carry knife and I have found myself needing one too. I keep a full size folder (usually the Toor Suitor) but keep a Spyderco LadyBug on my keyring. It adds little weight, but is more than capable of any “backup” duties I need it to complete.

The concept of a dedicated "tactical" knife you never use has always been ridiculous to me. A knife with decent steel should be enough to put up with anything. Unless you have like a food prep knife carrying more then one has always been an insane concept but to each is own, i already carry a hg no need for 2 knives

Most of the time there is no need for a second knife the only good reason I carry a second sometimes that I think is often overlooked is that some of us find ourselves in situations where we need to use our knives for dirty jobs, in environments where we don’t have access to a good way to clean the knife. When a knife has been cutting through grease and grime, dirt and blood, it’s a wonderful thing to have a second clean knife to use for my lunch. Then when I get back home I can clean both knifes and have the, ready for whatever else life throws my way.

My other "always carry" items aside from wallet/keys & phone are notebook/pen (in my Allett wallet), LeverGear charging cable (on my keychain), and a swiss army knife primarily for scissors and screwdriver. The SAK blade serves as my "back up" in case I break my folder.

It is interesting watching this from Australia, where you can not legally carry any knife in most places, and police have search powers for knives in certain specific places like nightlife areas. Even a multi-tool can be a problem if you don't have a legitimate reason to carry one. Legitimate does not include "being prepared ", self defence, or "I've always carried one." Yes, when you go bush, you can carry a knife when you're there, but it has to be packed away en route. EDC in this country has a whole different flavour, and that is not necessarily a bad thing. Thanks for your thoughtful and useful content.

I carry a main folder for knife stuff, a Leatherman for the multitools, and a slipjoint or Victorinox. Main knife gets mainly used first. The leatherman just happens to have 2 blades on it but I could live without them. It is handy when I have the tool in my hand already while working and I need a knife. The slipjoint, usually a swiss army knife is mostly there because I like them and they add extra function. I can also hand it to someone if they ask for a knife, they also aren't noticed as much as my orange spyderco endura or something like that. They're also good for when my knife is my only tool available for a job and I know it'll mess up the edge good whether it's a high end steel or not. Like scraping something. I'll use the usually cheaper and easier to maintain swiss army knife for that and keep my main blade sharp for another task. That doesn't happen super often but enough that I carry a back up blade. I've thought about a small sharpener but a swiss army knife is smaller and pockets easier, sometimes has 2 blades already, plus whatever other tools. I come across a good use to the inline reamer on the Alox models I typically carry like once a week and don't have a 3 drills handy to poke a hole. Overall I am aware I don't need all that, the Leatherman alone covers all those tasks. It's very nice to have a knife based tool for cutting though, so I could ditch the swiss army knife or traditional slipjoint but I've carried one for so long dropped in my pocket that I feel naked without it. I did ok for years without a leatherman but I also think I would end up missing it too much not to have it, also having an easily deployable one hand opening and locking knife is extremely convenient a lot of the time and I would miss it too. I've actually tried scaling down my carry and the knife and 2 tools that happen to have knives is my kit and it'll stay that way for a while. I also carry a flashlight but my phones got a light, a pen and a small comb. Everything but the main knife amd leatherman go into a pocket organizer that fits really nice in my from right pocket and I hardly notice it.

Great challenge on the multiple knives carried that you see on a lot of videos. I tend to have a minimalist carry but usually have two knives. The Midnite Manager always. Scissors, back up flashlight and pen. And then I select another knife for three day depending on what I'm doing and what I think I will need. This could be a bigger SAK or a bigger single bladed Knife. I live in the UK so we have limited on what we can carry in public.

For years I used to carry one on each side. Usually they were a matched pair. But the reasoning was twofold. If I had one sleeve or the other caught in machine, I had a knife I could reach. Also, if I needed a knife to assist in handgun retention, I could always reach a knife. In addition to that, I’d frequently carry a Leatherman or a SAK just to widen my capabilities. But yeah, I see some EDC stuff and I’m like “uh why????” When stuff is all pretty or something,

I am all for being prepared but if an edc weighs you down too much with items you basically never use, it does the opposite of what edc is intended for…it makes your life less convenient, not more. “But what if the apocalypse happens on my way to the grocery store?” Have an emergency setup within reach but not on body at all times. I know a lot of people have a different opinion…times when I’ve been surprised by unexpected things, I’ve usually found what I needed nearby without needing to have carried it around on body for 364 days before I needed that one day of the year. I carry a bit more than I need day-to-day, but never excessive.

CRKT No Bother, it's basically a sharpened pry bar, small in blade length and overall length but thicc and fixed blade so no joints to fail. And finally a Mora Kansbol, and yeah I think it might be a bit excessive but I've recently become a believer in Moraknivs, didn't want to accept that you could get such a good knife for so little money. So if I have to give a reason for the last one, it's because it makes me happy. 😁

They say admitting the problem is the first step in recovery. Yes I am a serial 2 knife carrier. I'm 62 and carry a SAK for about 45 years. That said I have always carried a larger knife (ie. Buck 110) now I carry a SAK Spartan and a Spyderco native 5 in cru ware. So yeah I may need a intervention 😂🦉

I think for a lot of people in the EDC community some knives are just pocket jewelry or conversation pieces with friends or others into EDC. Nothing wrong with that and I’m guilty of it myself. Let’s be honest few people perform tasks that require a $300+ knife. Most could perform the same task with a $40 knife. It’s just the cool factor within the community that drives it. I say that while my CRK Zaan is currently riding in my pocket in pristine condition! So I’m not judging! I typically carry a knife and a small utility blade. I cut up boxes and open packages several times a day for work. The utility blade just keeps me from sharpening a knife regularly or potentially mangling a blade by cutting into a staple. Also I don’t spend time getting nasty ass glue off my knife blade. As for needing two full size knives, I have to agree with you X, not something I personally find necessary. The guys that commented on having a specific knife for self defense is understandable. That’s just not my move.

My primary carry is a SAK of some sort. If i need a blade, it's the first thing i grab. If it's a task that isn't well suited for a slip joint, i have the locking blade on my Leatherman Rebar that's in my pocket pouch. If i know im cutting something that will destroy a knife edge, i use the utility knife in my pouch. I've tried to eliminate as many redundancies as I can with my edc. I have a few with some tools on my swiss and Leatherman, but i view the leatherman tools, apart from the pliers, as backup for my swiss.

This is the redundancy problem. Use to be people owned one knife, handgun, flashlight, lighter, etc, because there wasn’t a great variety. Today we are continually upgrading these items from the ever growing plethora of affordable choices. What happens to the old? Well, we don’t want to throw good gear away, so we find an excuse to continue carrying the now obsolete gear.

I agree. But like said, if that's your thing, roll with it. I don't carry a back up knife because I don't see the purpose for me carrying more then one I do carry a key chain knife if I need to use one to cut paper or such in public that's but if the job calls for my knife then out it comes and fights the scary bag or box and so on.

Been thinking I really don’t need the folder anymore, but I’m just so used to having it clipped to the top of my right pocket that I can’t seem to leave the house without it. Habit over function I guess.

I technically carry two blades. One is a gerber pocket knife which I use for a lot of stuff (opening packages, cutting string/rope, typical knife stuff) and a gerber multi-colored with the sliding pliers. I use both on a nearly daily basis. I wear pants/shorts pretty well constantly with cargo pockets, so space isn't an issue.

I would say I keep finding myself needing pliers to pull nails out of my tire on a regular basis, but I don’t want to carry a full line Leatherman. I want something small and easy to carry. I haven’t found it yet. Maybe I just need to get a pair and keep in the truck.

I know they are dumb but I really love tactical looking knives, so when im carrying a protech or microtech around, I like to keep a slip joint knife in my pocket so if I do need to cut something and the situation would be not be receptive to seeing an auto or otf pop out, ill have something much less threatening to use as an alternative. I very much dislike calling needless attention to myself whenver possible.

Hi. In principle I agree with you… that said, I carry two Victorinox folding knives with me every single day. Attached to my keychain is a Victorinox Rambler. It has the tools I use most often, is small, light, and, due to being attached to my keychain, will always be with me. In my back pocket, I keep a Victorinox Craftsman. The Craftsman is a 91mm knife, with a bunch of extra capabilities over the Rambler. I carry both to manage different use cases. Keychain knife, always there, by virtue of being always there, you know you don’t have to think about it. Back pocket knife. Many more capabilities, can cover the capabilities of the keychain knife, except for being literally attached to me (keychain knife is attached to keychain, keychain is attached to pants via belt loop) so, for me, two pocket knives makes sense because in these use cases, they each actually provide extra capabilities the other doesn’t provide.

You have a very sound agreement. I agree with most of your statement. As for me I always have two knives on me a neck knife and a key chain knife, both super small fixed blade ( cold steel urban pal and a super edge both under 3 inch blades) I do have a third knife on me Usually it what I call a throw away it a cheap 30$ or less a knife I don’t care if let someone else use it doesn’t matter it get broke. Maybe I’m wrong in this view I did for a long time carry a small folder as what I call the public knife Because one day I was at my phone provider and the clerk ask his coworker for a knife or Scissors Not thinking I pulled out a 5inch bladed folding knife The look on that man face So I switched to a small folder Any way injoy the video Thank you

I think you said it best with your line about 'bring the right tool for the job' or however you worded it. Too often people are using knives or tools in a way that they weren't ever really intended to be used, and then that device fails. Are there circumstances beyond our control where a tool needs to be used in a manner for which it was never intended? Absolutely. In an emergency, life--or-death situation, I'm not going to care if I destroy a $250 knife if it means survival. But realistically, we're not often finding ourselves in these situations so prior planning can ensure we're bringing the best tool for the task at hand, rather than bringing a suite of tools for a 'just in case' scenario. It's easy to overpack with 'what-ifs.' Interesting take on this stuff, dude. New to the channel here, but you have a new subscriber!

Extra knives should have a definite purpose. I usually have a folder in my pocket, and a fixed blade and multi-tool in my bag. The folder gets used for all the edc type stuff. My fixed blade usually gets used for food prep or bushcraft type tasks. My leatherman knife rarely gets used, as I mostly use it for the pliers. Occasionally I'll pocket carry a small fixed blade, but that's usually when I'm in the woods and I have some sort of chopping tool in my bag. Every tool has a purpose and gets used, otherwise it would just be dead weight.
