Yeah, as a lifelong asthma sufferer and a fellow, "I need my inhaler or I am f***ed" person... staying at an old cabin in the woods AT ALL would not be great for your asthma. The woods have all the natural irritants (like pollen), the cabin is old so it has lots of dust (especially in the crawlspace), the girl starts a fire AND smokes (both triggers). And that's not to mention the panic of being attacked and the physical exertion if running. Dude should have been DYING. Come to think of it, it would be creepier of they had the inhaler come back by having the strangers GIVE HIM his inhaler so he would be breathing/conscious while they stabbed him to make sure they inflicted all the pain.

Their whole bit is that they're just doing all this horrible torment to the whoever happens to be home when they check! The question they ask as a cover when they check your door isn't supposed to be meaningful! How can someone miss something so simple and still get handed the keys to make a whole trilogy? I mean The Strangers is a film that really doesn't lend itself to being turned into a franchise, so why the production company thought a trilogy would be a good idea at all is a mystery.

This is is such a random, nitpicky thing but the lighting in this film is so artificial and soundstagey that it automatically took me out. I was constantly aware when the actors were on a set in a studio and not a real world filming location. This isn't the only film lately where I've had this problem too. Its like cinematographers have no idea how to light soundstages to look realistic anymore.

A lot of this is due to filming on digital. Everything looks too crisp, too uncanny. In our heads, we still picture "movies" looking like movies that were actually shot on film. A good director with a decent budget will edit their film so that it removes some of that artificiality that certain digital cameras can give. And the lighting plays a HUGE part in that too. Horror movies have never been given big budgets, but now they can shoot digital and make a big glossy movie on the cheap that looks "good".

They didn't take too long to decide something weird was going on. Would you be able to grit your teeth and commit to confronting a group of killers with force, while your mind turns to fuzz and time itself blurs as the adrenaline forces you out of lucidity and into true panic? Doubt it. Everyone says they could, and then they face a situation that's less than half as terrifying and fold. The problem with The Strangers Chapter One.. not only is it just a blatant remake of the original, but they completely missed the point of why it was scary in the first place.. also, the town being creepy was completely unnecessary and provided no addition to the story.. It completely distracts from the main point.. being secluded in a home that has basically been turned into a cage for you to be tortured in.. they even have the boyfriend go into town for food, so it doesn't feel far at all.. I loved the difference of making the couple actually be into each other.. The town should've just been a normal town, could've even been a super friendly town.. It could've been a remake or sequel, they stop at a diner on their way across the state, and meet an old lady who offers her AirBnB, after talking about the sites nearby, and the couple wanna stay a little longer to check them out.. the AirBnB could be an old lakeside cabin even just 15mi into the forest, out of town.. part of a neighborhood of lakeside expensive summer properties that are just unoccupied, because it's winter, (or really close to winter, we don't even need snow to be a hindrance in this story)(.. although, creepy footsteps leading to the house, but not away, would be a cool detail for the couple to notice).. Then the events of the attack happen, and the old lady drives over to give them breakfast in the morning, and discovers them.. and if we want to make a trilogy with the girlfriend, an easy quick couple flashes of the lady rushing her to the hospital is all we need

I was living alone for the first time in my 3rd year of college when The Strangers came out and it made me scared to answer the fucking door afterwards. "Because you're here"? I guess its not their home technically, which kind of fucks with the future movies because if they know its not their home then obviously its people that live in the town and there is most likely some major conspiracy within the town. Strangers felt so much scarier when Prey at Night came out and you find out these people just go driving around, going out of their own town at times, to find people to fucking kill. There's no ties to anyone, no conspiracy, just human being psychologically torturing other human beings they don't know or know anything about and eventually murdering them.

Remember: if it seems like no one's home, a murderer will be deterred. But if it seems like no one's home, a robber looking for money or a drug fix will be lured in. So your best option is probably to make it look like a lot of people are home, and/or like someone is armed and/or too crazy to be f--ked with. Or a cop lives here.

I was not a fan of Prey at Night due to how different it was from the original Strangers, but at the very least it did try to be different in a significant way. This movie was literally just a rehash of the first movie, just done worse and with extra plot beats that make no sense + add nothing (but are probably there to justify this being a trilogy let's be honest). Not everything has to be a franchise, some things can stay as they are. The original Strangers was terrifying BECAUSE there was no lore or motivation behind the strangers. They terrorized and killed innocent people solely because they wanted to. You didn't need horror tropes like a creepy town or religious undertones to make it scary, it was scary because it felt like something that could actually happen to someone. Whether the follow up films follow the original plot or do their own thing, either way they'll never capture the same lightning in a bottle the original did.

Just seeing the commercial made me sigh. The Strangers, like many things, should have stayed a stand alone because there is nothing really to add to it since the there was no motive beyond "bad people doing bad things" and the more they try and add some meaning to it the more muddy it will get. If they really want to milk the franchise they should have kept making the movies as "the strangers" targeting a new couples every time. Sometimes you think it is just random other times you question if there is more to it but never actually answer the question. Another stupid change they made was having them attacked at a rental... It was scarier in their own home because you think you are safe at home and the strangers subverted that. Besides that them having "home field" advantage made audiences think they have more of a chance. As it stands now I predict some type of cult/brainwashing/hive mind thing controlling different people each time. Like a if you don't join us we will kill you without telling you why. Whatever it ends up being it will be stupid when compared to the brutal "because you were home" of the original...

I've seen 6 horror movies this year so far (Night Swim, Imaginary, Late Night With the Devil in streaming, Tarot, The Watchers, The Strangers, Chapter 1). The first 2 are easily worse, though I liked Imaginary marginally better than Night Swim. The Strangers sucked, but trust me, it wasn't as bad as those 2. Tarot was also crap, thought the monsters looked good. The Watchers was interesting, but not a masterpiece. Late Night was actually good (weird ending, though). Edit: Forgot Abigail, which was also entertaining, but far better if you didn't see the trailers.

As a result it's not "Because you were here", it's "Because we did everything to prevent you from leaving". So it just doesnt hold the same weigh as it did in the orginal.

I used to be one of those people that hated horror movies because I would think about the creepy moments at the most inopportune times, like going to the bathroom in the middle of the night. But my mom, who is a horror lover, had been trying to get me into horror for many years. So a few years ago I decided to face my fears and get into the genre. I basically watched nothing but horror for two whole years and now I am desensitized to most things. Every once in a while something will get me though, like I hate eye/finger gore, and it creeps me out when I can see people's eyes through masks, but by broadening my horizons, nothing really stops me now, even if there are moments I don't like. I've watched a lot of classic horror movies I always wished I could watch, and still have more to get to. So for those who are still afraid to watch horror, I suggest identifying what about horror specifically scares you, remind yourself it all fake, and slowly dip your toes in. If you watch enough, eventually it's not really a problem anymore.

The Strangers worked because you had a believable premise and the actors were excellent enough to pull off the heavy emotions they go though. When James shoots his friend you feel their mutual horror and heartbreak over what just happened and the movie lingers on it. His disbelief at Kristen's upset when he returns makes sense because they are fighting. The movie plays out like you watching a crime re-enactment, not a horror movie, which is why it works. This one is just...a bad knock off.

Back when I was still in my horror phase, the Strangers was one of those movies that created a god damn core memory. Part of it's whole magic trick was making the threat entirely mundane, but utterly inscrutable. The randomness was so much the point. And, like... in the modern culture, I could actually see moving the premise towards "toxic communities crap out these kinds of psychos" as a premise, but to try and do that as a TRILOGY while also being this god damn inept, I do not think they have the presence of mind to make this effecting. Edit: Oh, but I am going to be legitimately MAD if they are trying to make the religious angle something genuinely supernatural. That is just crapping on the original in such an ugly way. Making the killers superpowered, or even just doing the killings for some kind of eldritch entity, just all the no.

The original The Strangers movie has such a special place in my heart. When I was very young (maybe 4 or 5 so maybe this was in the early 2000s) I was looking for a movie to watch in our VHS collection. Probably something like The Land Before Time and I found a movie that looked scary. The cover had a woman tied up with two people wearing freaky masks on either side of her holding a phone up to her head. It looked scary to me, and I passed by it in favor of ANYTHING else, and I eventually forgot about it. Fast forward to like 2017, and I first saw the masks of The Strangers and had this distinct memory of me seeing a movie with these same masks. I never looked further into it, or I would have known that The Strangers came out years after I saw that movie’s cover. Now fast forward again about a year ago, and my mom, brother and I were looking for Danny Devito movies we had never seen and put one up that looked… Familiar. It was Ruthless People. I thought The Strangers and Ruthless People were the same movie for many years and never thought twice about it.

They didn’t have iPhones and FaceTime. It just made sense. Now this main girl lives and we’re just supposed to expect that this killer is so obsessed with her he’s going to follow her in to a public hospital? I feel like this movie is worse than Imaginary or Night Swim because a) it's basically the first one but only done worse. It's like they saw the flaws of the first one and said YES Lets amp that up. b) the marketing lied leading us to believe this is an origin story while clearly this wasn't At least the other two tried to do something, this one feels like it didn't even try edit: typos

I also don't think those two really - tried - but fair points! I still give it to this because it DID creep me out at times and the other two are just so incredibly boring that they fail at everything they're trying to be

The marketing never lied because the marketing never said that. You just didn’t do your research properly. This was always going to be a new take on the story, never a prequel.

As a woman that loves my horror movies, loves reviews, but tends to not enjoy many female reviewers, you are awesome! My kind of humor, smart ass remarks, facial expressions.. etc! I'm a solid fan! I've always wanted to do this, but never did! Living vicariously through you guys and loving it! You rock! Hilarious review! She really should've put her damn pants on!😅

I don't get why this of all franchises needed a triology, it's like the director is trying to set up some Michael Myers vs Laurie Strode beef with Maya and the strangers. But just ruins the conceit of the movie, the point is it's _not_ personal, it's totally random. *That's* why it's frightening, why their reasoning is so unsettling; 'It's nothing personal, you just happen to be here'.🤷It's not as if Maya saw their faces and even if she did, they could just kill her.

I love the fact that this has two sequels well underway. Like, even if this movie bombs horribly, the creators are kinda screwed because they kinda HAVE to finish the others. And that’s hilarious.
