My basic recommendation: If you carry and transport your own drums go for soft cases. If they go into a trailer and/or are transported by someone else go for hard cases!

If you transport your own drums, get a cart, like a RocknRoller Multi-Cart. Then weight won't be an issue, and you only need to make one trip from car to stage.

For moving or airline travel, hard cases are the way to go. Otherwise, soft cases are the way to go. For my snares, everything goes in a soft case, then for moving, gets stacked inside a hard tom case.

Always used Hardcase. Never had any damage in twenty years of gigging. Even "helpful" band members and venue staff carrying things to my car and setting them down in puddles etc. Worth the money and extra weight if you have half decent equipment.

I use drum bags by millenium, and they are really good! Tour-series, I only have to snare, but when I need to change the old ones, I'm gonna purchase all Tour-series! And I have a Hardcase for the cymbals ;)

My Protection Racket Deluxe cymbal bag split open at the bottom this week after several years of use and yesterday I received a new Gewa SPS Cymbal bag. It takes up to 24" cymbals. I like that it has rigid sidewalls, firm front and back surfaces and is very well padded. The magnetic flap is cool and I like the red accents here and there. Hopefully it'll last me a while. Would have been nice if Gewa had kept the blue velvet fleece in the compartments that I know the first generation of Gewa SPS cymbal bags had and that my first gen Gewa SPS snare case has, but other than that it's a stunning cymbal bag.

Started with hard cases and yes ...they protect 100% 20 + years. Great protection. Also for rain and dirt. Yes they are heavy and nor very easy to carry around so ...now flipped over to the Ahead design. A concert band has a kind of Ahead cases for a Gretcs Catalina Ash and transport the drums in a van and yes ....the drums are damaged! There are also cracks in the bass drum spurs. Used the hardcases for cymbals and ...that was not easy to carry and also not easy to open. So now have bags. I travel a lot with my small car. Mostly have small setups and sometimes big setups. For hardware: i started with hard cases and was very happy with a hard case with wheels taht was big enough for almost everything but ...very heavy and now flipped over to have more bags in stead of only 1 case. Had 1000+ gigs in about 18 years. More than 50 gigs a year and 3 to 6 rehearsals a week. Carrying stuff around is big party of my activities.

Great comparison video, but the current Gewa SPS prices are higher than Hardcase. For example, the total price for my kit configuration (24'',13'',16'',14'' snare) is 514euros for Hardcase and 564euros for Gewa SPS, not really close to Ahead bags price range!

How water resistant are the Ahead bags and Gewa cases? I never paid much attention to how much rain my cymbal bags absorb, but my stick bag has gotten soaked to the point where the inside lining has discolored. That's one nice thing about hard plastic cases, water is definitely not an issue.

I was very interested in the Gewa SPS. But they have an exaggeratedly larger diameter. In a 12" you can easily go to a 14". So they are very bulky and in the car they take up too much space. I don't like them anymore.

Then just get what fits best, not what matches the tom diameter.
