    Jess would have been good for Rory in the later shows when she was floundering but taking no responsibility for it. They would have been great together as adults.

    The tragic misunderstanding in the series I saw was between Lorelai and Jess, and it's based in their first meeting where Lorelai incorrectly compares their situations. Even worse, she claims to be the authority over his experience. Yeah they were both witty rebelious teens, but I can't forgive Lorelai for not recognizing the main difference when it came to "escaping" their parents: She chose to leave where Jess was left behind. Lorelai was extremely well educated and was raised in a wealthy house by very assertive parents that she clearly takes after. She may have found it stifling, but all of the mental tools were there to ensure she would succeed. Her baby gave her reason to pull all her sh!t together. Ultimately she chose to leave. Jess was abandoned by his father from the get-go and raised by a poor ill-equiped teen mother who didn't know her own mind and gave up on him constantly. Despite being smart he was never really educated and his perceptive nature was seen through the eyes of neglect. Ultimatley he was discarded by his mother too when he was pushed on to Luke, alone. Lorelai was a major voice in the community and the biggest influencer of the two people Jess loved most. Not saying Jess's behaviour was acceptable, but it was understandable if she had tried. Unfortunately Lorelai's judgy nature pitted with Jess's defensive nature at the start. Not saying they would have been besties, but it might have been easier if Jess knew the people he loved weren't torn between him and her.

    Always thought it wasn’t fair how little we got of Jess and Rory as an actual couple. The buildup was spectacular but the payoff wasn’t. In my mind they find their way back to each other. Even though the revival on netflix was awful and Rory was a horrible person in that, you can still see how *Jess* was the one who helped her and gave her what she needed, even after all those years apart. So I imagine that after the events of the revival, Rory grows to become the person that Jess deserves, just like how Jess grew to become what she deserved, and they are finally together after all those years of pining, just like Luke and Lorelei.

Alot of people say Jess didn’t try but imagine being poor as Jess was and being forced in a situation where you’re SURROUNDED by ridiculous wealth. Imagine knowing this family is judging you and still going anyway for the person you love. Yes he was late but he knew it would end badly. I love Jess because he tried with no tools for success . Dean did the bare minimum with more resources than jess ever had

    I feel like I'm starting to understand why I - from a lower class - always liked Jess and my friends - from upper class - liked Logan... They just couldn't understand him, while I cannot understand Logan (I never liked him). I tried to make my way up, but I guess I failed... I even guess I would have done better without even trying. It was another world, sadly not my world. Why can't we as a society care more for children and give them (nearly) same chances? It's just sad that family matters _that_ much... "From rex to riches" is a myth, so that the rich don't have to help and stay rich, because "everybody can make it" - hahaHA. That was a big topic on GG, too, classes... I liked that. Seemed like with Rory they tried to show that it's a myth that you can make it without a rich family. Lorelai tried, but even she already having a better start couldn't make it for Rory without her parents.

    On the lack of sympathy for Jess as a character, I AGREE. Now before anyone comes at me for this I just want to say that I also don't excuse any of Jess's actions. But I can also easily say that in comparison to characters like Emily and even Logan, he does get more consequences for said actions than frankly either of the other two get at times (though Emily is put in her place more by Lorelai than frankly Logan is by Rory for the moments where he was an asshole to her). And the thing that kind of bugs me overall from fans that hate Jess and love Logan is that many of the same excuses or even reasons as to why Jess behaves the way that he does that are rejected by them, are the /same/ that they try to use for Logan. Like saying "well, Logan couldn't communicate with Rory bc she was his first real relationship" or how Mitchum was so awful that you can't even blame Logan for his reckless behavior when he's around 24 by the time he behaves poorly in season 6. There's also like an insane amount of difference purely in how Logan and Jess even grew up. Logan got kicked out of MULTIPLE private schools for misbehaving, but because he came from a rich family, he was able to graduate and then go to Yale while dodging more than one criminal offense bc he bragged about stealing yachts off of Fiji during his gap year. Jess on the other hand was told that he can't graduate high-school because of his lack of days spent in his final year, and he lost those days working a full-time job at Wallmart. He wasn't slacking off or being some daredevil like Logan was likely while in high-school, he was already working as a full-time employee because he considered himself too unworthy of any better future for himself AND he likely grew up in a home that was never secure on money. I mean if you take into account him a) working a full-time job at Wallmart to buy his own car to go to work, b) slacking off on school just to work a full-time job as a minor, and c) Liz's overall hipster approach to life which is only her approach to it NOW and was likely even worse when she was raising Jess, his state and lack of interest in school is understandable. Like he himself says "ask my mother, she can give you a few reasons why I'm not going to college". Also, I feel like people overall are just weird when talking about why Jess was a "bad boyfriend" to Rory and list him ghosting her by the end of season 3 as this significant reason when he didn't.....deliberately do that to hurt her. He thought he was being thrown out by Luke because he didn't want to stay for ANOTHER year in school just to graduate, and he was getting dropped out. The only person that could possibly even take him in was his own father. And also I know that he left because of the spinoff, but another mind-boggling thing to me is why Luke was insistent on Jess retaking senior year or even going to high-school if Jess was simply not interested in it. Like, why steal his car to make him go to school??? Sit down and talk to the kid, offer alternatives for him! If he doesn't or even can't go to university, community College exists! He could've gotten a GED before the end of season 3! Just, so much of Jess's overall situation by the end of that season is in part because all these adults and particularly his guardian don't want to take into account how he is and then work from that. Jess is obviously capable of work if he was even awarded the "employee of the month" badge at Wallmart.

    I know that some people like Dean for instigating a fight with Jess after *that* happened in Kyle's parents' bedroom with Rory, but the thing is, Dean himself didn't know what happened. For all he knew, Jess and Rory might've just had an argument and Rory got hurt by his response, which is technically part of what did happen. And even if Dean figured it was just that and was concerned for Rory.....why fight Jess instead of, idk, make sure Rory is OK and comfort her? Like that's my main gripe here. Dean doesn't actually care about how Rory feels even in this scene, because the minute he sees an opening to *attack* Jess for being rude, he does it, and he also fights dirty because Dean instigates the fight by attacking him from behind. When Rory repeatedly yells at them to stop, Dean, who was in the offense *from the start* in this fight, doesn't stop. He doesn't even bother to look back and see if Rory's alright bc she's literally yelling at them to stop. And also, why is he fighting his ex's current boyfriend if he himself is also with his *current* girlfriend at this party? Like some may go as far as to say that he "couldn't" have comforted Rory because of Lindsay but that is simply not true. And frankly him just randomly attacking Jess in front of all these party goers doesn't look any better. It's also why I don't really blame Jess for not immediately trying to play the angel after this situation the same way Dean did by trying to clean up afterwards because Jess was defending himself in this fight, he didn't start it yet everyone including Luke thought he did because Dean is viewed as this perfect resident who can do no wrong...

  • @bekahswanson

    @bekahswanson

    Жыл бұрын

    Ugh yes! I was just thinking of these same points the other day. Why couldn’t Dean have just comforted Rory? I understand why he might’ve held some resentment towards Jess bc Jess essentially “stole” his girlfriend- although Rory made it plainly obvious that she fancied Jess since the day he came into town and preferred his company over the company of her own boyfriend. It obviously wasn’t bc he was “protecting” Rory, it was bc he was taking his anger out on Jess. Yes, Jess wasn’t completely innocent in the whole Rory/Dean relationship ending, but if anything Dean should be faaarrrrr more upset at Rory than Jess. Rory was Dean’s girlfriend and she owed it to him to be completely honest. Also I realize it parallels to the whole Jess situation in the episode where he got “beaked” (lmao) by the swan and went to go meet Rory’s grandparents. Everyone thought Jess fought Dean and that Dean was incapable of initiating a fight with Jess. Several episodes later, here we are and, although Jess probably *did* deserve it, Dean initiated a fight

  • @inthought02

    @inthought02

    Жыл бұрын

    @@bekahswanson I agree with that last part, especially when even Luke thought that Jess got the black eye from a fight despite obviously not having gotten into any for a longer time then. And Dean's behavior towards Jess was so bizarre following his breakup from Rory because like, Dean initiated the break up! He broke up with her in front of so many people at the dance and even said so himself that it was obvious that Rory was just as much into Jess. I could understand him still being upset with Rory after that but then he just completely switched gears and went back and forth with both Jess and Rory. He was all "well I'm going to be her friend now. That worked out well for you!" to Jess, implying he was gonna try and win her back, and then he just got together with Lindsay and when Rory, as an actual friend to him, said that she wasn't sure about his plan to get married RIGHT out of high-school, which is a completely understandable response, he just complained to her again and tried to switch the argument on her relationship issues with Jess.

He was probably holding those grudges for months, it was nice that he let them out instead of having them eat him alive.

  • @danah3462
    @danah3462 Жыл бұрын

    I'm rewatching currently and watched the episode where Jess was attacked by a swan and Rory didn't believe him when he said the black eye is not from a fight. She then asked Dean if he got into a fight with Jess and only then she believed it wasn't a fight. Also, she didn't tell Jess about being friendly again with Dean after they broke up or being at Ms. Patty's together. I must say, her behavior is the worst to build up trust and honest communication in this very fresh relationship with a young man who seems to be cool on the outside but is fragile on the inside and thinks he is undeserving. They always kiss, but don't talk! So I also see Rory being responsible for the failure of their relationship. But then again, they were both 16/17, I probably would not have done it any better at that age. It takes time and experience to master relationships, and some never get it right.

    the lack of screentime as a couple was really irritating! it wasn't as though the writers just wanted to portray them as a bad couple because through dialogue and actions (like in 3x18 where we see them debate over what movies they want to watch and that they have movie nights) we learnt that jess and rory spent a LOT of time together as a couple! they spent a lot on their conflict where jess struggled to be vulernable and communicate and rory would also not communicate (like 3x16 where she's upset jess didn't call her but she never tells him and in the end, just tells him to erase her message and constantly compared him to dean). the writers were desperate to send him off to his spin-off that they didn't care to put in any effort in their actual relationship which was a huge mistake since they never date again and the spin-off didn't get picked up ironically jess was the only boyfriend (other than tristan) to be offered series-long contracts because they were going to be her main love interests (logan was tristan's replacement since both were meant to push her towards the rich world). he didn't sign it and by the time jess was meant to be back in S6, he was booked doing heroes instead. its obvious in 6x08 that jess was going to be her endgame, we see the clear contrast between jess and logan and how well they know her. not a conicidence that in 6x07 logan doesn't even know his girlfriend's birthday while jess remembers it. not to mention him getting rory on the right path while logan was fine with rory wasting away her life also the revival shows that logan and rory aren't meant to be together and it took rory a while to fully let go of their relationship. she never wanted to marry him and logan didn't grow as a person, he just went to his womanising ways after rory rejected him, showing that he never actually grew. jess got rejected by rory but he still chose to grow as a person regardless because HE wanted to be better. logan was always fine with who he was and rory leaving him just meant he could go back to his old ways. IDK why fans expect rory to tell logan to not marry odette, he's a grown adult in his 30s! if he didn't want to marry and go along with his father's plans then he wouldn't.

    Idk why I started to cry when you were talking about Jess. I feel so sorry for him, I think I see myself in him a lot. Yes, him leaving Stars Hallow and abandoning Rory is a trauma response. And when you're in a constant fight or flight state, you can't function in a relationship. Luke is not traumatized and he still needs a book to learn about relationships. I think the writers did a really good job with Jess' character. That's how people who were neglected as a child act.

Starting with lorelai is against and used whatever little “misbehavior” against Jess, she kept felling Rory’s kind with how “great” Dean is which lead to Rory (2nd reason) comparing Jess & Dean against each other, there was also stalker Dean who kept threatening Jess whenever he was alone with him about how he’s getting Rory back, the town people hated Jess, the school principal of SHH is Shitty one who refused to give Jess a chance and did NOT warn him or Luke before it was too little too late, Jess’s Shitty father showed up out of nowhere and just left him again. So it’s not just on Jess, Rory screwed up as well and there SO MANY external factors that were against them. I truly believe if Rory left with him in S4 she would have been better off, and I do mean that character wise and romantically wise

    I think you start to see a lot of parallels between Emily and Lorelei when you look at the way Lorelei treats Jess. I always wanted her to realize she was projecting stuff from her childhood onto Jess, but Lorelei isn't exactly self-aware like that. I completely agree with your assessment that Jess is never allowed empathy and understanding from the other characters in the show and some fans. This is a traumatized kid who has been abandoned by every adult he has allowed himself to trust and rely on. He never had any adults demonstrating healthy communication and attachment to learn from, and everyone was willing to scapegoat him the moment he made a mistake. Of course, he isn't going to know how to maintain a healthy relationship in the midst of all of that. I also really wish they let Jess move on instead of still pining over Rory in the Netflix revival. For someone who has grown so much since the first time we see him on the show, it hurts to see him still clinging to this connection from the past. I really wish the writers had just let him move on.

    I used to have beef because the Palladinos were treated in such a way that made them quit, but I think that Rosenbaum led a group of writers who delved into all the characters more. Yes the goofy things the characters did were fun character traits, but as they evolved having a reason for their behavior or at least an explanation of it was cool. Palladino refused to watch the 7th season and many characters suffered for it, all except queen Emily. But I’m glad at least she had a cool story line.

    Yeah in the revival Jess should had have a better outcome. Maybe married sand with a child and very moved on from Rory like Dean was. He still could have told her to write a book but definitely should had moved on from her. Like so far beyond.

    Omg, hi! i just watched this video now because it pop out in my timeline, and thank you so much for the shout out to my channel, I also agree with every single word you said here (especially about Jess having less screentime than Dean and Logan, ugh, this always made me mad because we never had the time to know him and his backstory better) except for one thing: i don't think that Rory is not right for Jess right now, i think she's just simply lost. I feel like when Mitchum told her she wasn't good enough to be a journalist, her whole world just collapsed. She never had a plan B, her only goal was to become a journalist, so it's like she lost her pourpose in life, she started became apathic and insecure and then unfortunately we know the rest... I also think her grandparents and Logan had a key role in her downfall: her grandparents just spoiled her, and kinda manipulated her, they basically treated her like she was their daughter. if you think about it, they had a huge impact even in Rory's accademic choices. Rory originally wanted to go to Harvard, then I feel like she changed her plans to pleased her grandparents (let's not forget that Richard was a Yale alumni himself). Richard and Emily's influence on Rory is undeniable. They didn't even let Rory take responsibility for her actions, because whenever she made a mistake they were always there to bail her out. Like the time she stole a yacht or when she dropped out of Yale. They basically poured out on Rory the life expectancies they had for Lorelai. It's as if the tables had been reversed: Lorelai ran away in search of her own independence, while Rory has basically lived the life Emily and Richard would have wanted for their daughter. Rory has pretty much lost her personal identity along the way. Up til season 3, she had her own identity, ideas and parameters for herself. Dating Jess, for example, was perhaps the first and only choice that Rory made independently, although neither Lorelai nor Emily liked him, she did not let their opinion influence her decision. In fact, if you pay attention to it, Lorelai liked Dean more than Jess, and Emily liked Logan instead. Rory just liked Jess, she wasn't influenced by anything or anyone, it was what SHE wanted, not what someone else wanted for her. From season 4 onwards Rory got completely lost and lost her identity trying to please others instead. And the relationship with Logan was the worst thing that could have happened to her, because he was immature and irresponsible, and he basically taught her to live the way he lives, without taking responsibility because they're rich so they don't have to pay the consequences (even though in the end Rory had to pay the consequences of this lifestyle because she got pregnant *full circle*) But Rory isn't like that, she's never been like that. That's not her world, it's her grandparents' and Logan's world, just like Stars Hollow is Lorelai's world. But what is Rory's world? Where does she belong? That's the whole point. Rory still hasn't found her place in the world, the one that's right for her. For me her place is next to Jess, it's always been with him. Before, they were too young and there were too many problems and complications involved. But now that they're both adults they would be perfect for each other in my opinion, and I feel like Rory could really grow up only with Jess by her side. They always brought out the best in each other.

    Can you please do an analysis on Jess and Luke's relationship? I love Rory and Jess, don't get me wrong, but I'd love to hear about how much of an influence Luke and Jess had on each other. You have both of them first afraid to fail the other and regretful when they "do," an then Luke helps Jess with healthy communication (which Jess immediately uses towards Luke), and they end the series in a really good relationship (and that was one part of the revival that I really enjoyed!).Theirs was a relationship that had ups and downs, but was so wholesome and beautiful by the end that it became my favorite progression in the show. On Liz also being a young mother like Lorelai, I don't exactly know all the details about her and Luke's parents and what their individual relationships with them were, but honestly, given how Luke himself who is "stable" and pretty strict still has a lot of communication problems and is really just not good at showing his more vulnerable side to other people, I feel like Liz's parents and I think even the death of her mom at an earlier age had an effect on her. This isn't to say that I fully excuse Liz for how she later behaves in life and towards Jess but take into consideration this, and then also take into consideration her raising a kid alone as a teenage mom in another city, far away from her older brother who tried to take care of her, going through all these men that they had god knows what kind of a relationship with her own kid, and then compare it to Lorelai's situation as a teen mom raising Rory while being a maid in an inn that was run by a woman who became somewhat of a pseudo-guardian for Lorelai when she was young. I don't doubt that Lorelai and Rory's situation in the beginning was tough as well, but I feel like Lorelai having Mia as sort of a guiding force for herself that would then enable her to grow up professionally and go from a maid to an inn manager who runs it in the owner's name while also finishing business school was pretty significant overall for her. Compared to Liz trying to navigate motherhood in a city alone and also trying to rely on all these men that she dated while not really properly caring for her own kid

    yes! and also, the show is pg13, so if we really think about it as a "real life thing" the chances of Liz being an addict or dating one and exposing Jess to that are very high. And I may be confused but is implide TJ is violent (with he's ex), so maybe some of Liz's exs were to. The way the show had to handle things because it was a family show makes Jess's character lack some background that may explain his trauma. I also like how he is the only one of Rory's love interest that grows and sees her as a person and not just as a idealized dream girl. (sorry for my english)

    4:07 YES! Jess was such a complex character. My heart broke for him. His mother was a nutcase who sent him away, he had never met his own father until he one day just showed up. Of course he’s an angry kid. He didn’t handle things with Rory properly, but, like you said, he was 16 and how could he be expected to know how to properly emotionally communicate? It wasn’t Rory’s job to “fix him”, but nearly everything he did was a trauma response.

    also, from the way she talked about her relatiosnhips to lorelai in s4 when getting ready during the wedding, i suspect liz has had fair share of abusive relationships and if that's the case, jess definitely must have suffered from those too. in addition to this, liz had also had drug problems (mentioned several times by luke) before getting together with tj. i can only imagine how jess's childhood must have been and as much as i get how you're saying a spinoff was unnecessary, this is one of the reasons why i wanted it. like we could've gotten to know more about how his life was in nyc.

    One thing I hated, was Lorelai's treatment of Jess. It was like beating someone who's already down; she's a figure of authority, the adult and there she is, treating him like that. It never sat down with me well as a teen, but now that *I too* am a grown-up lol, it's appaling that she felt *entitled to treat him like that*. This really drives home that Lorelai is a flawed human being who does make mistakes because that, to me, is her at her lowest and it's not even my Jess-bias talking. She made it so that Rory and Luke who cared for both would be torn between them; worse is how BOTH choose Lorelai in the end.

In the year in the life we see him again coming back to stars hollow to help her (along with getting his mom and TJ out of the veggie group) anyway. My theory is, Rory will raise her child (probably daughter) along side Jess who potentially joins Rory working on the stars hollow gazette, and pushes her to go back to school to get another degree so she can become a teacher at .. you guessed it Chilton. All the while they are falling in love and end up together.

    Loved the video! Sorry for the long comment in advance.. just so many thoughts. I can’t believe how little we got of Jess and Rory as a couple… ridiculous!! We basically only got lane calling them an agoraphobic couple and then it was goodbye. I think one of the best relationships in the show is between Luke and Jess which I would’ve watched an entire spinoff of. I also wish there was more than like 2 scenes between Jess and Paris bc that episode where they talk about their book tastes is *chefs kiss. Okay so my biggest annoyance with Jess’ character treatment is that yes I’m glad that they showed his progression in the background when he would come back, but I hated how each time he did he was still pining for Rory. Furthermore, I despise how in the revival they so badly want to hammer in the idea that history repeats itself that they completely betray the characters. Logan does not equal Christopher… the fact that Rory rejected his proposal and he still has a side relationship with her.. he loves her!! If she told him she’s pregnant he would not just ignore it and be absent. Also, that Jess is still pining for Rory and that he is Luke. In that “the girls I like don’t give a damn about me speech” I think that distinction is made pretty clear. I’m sure in his head there is always that “what if” bc when she visits his book launch he clearly still likes her, but I don’t think he would just wait for her. But in the revival it feels like he’s been doing just that since we never see him with anyone other than Shane! Has he been celibate this whole time or what? Luke’s age is never made entirely clear, but now that you made the point of Liz also probably being a young mother I now see Jess as a foil to Rory. They’re both smart and both have single mothers but you see how financial situation and parenting drastically changes how things go for them. Lastly, when Jess came back for Liz’s wedding and Luke gives him that book.. nothing felt worse than seeing him go to Rory and just ask her to go away with him. I thought he was smart so either he isn’t or that book needs to be taken off the shelves bc if it’s spinning something that would make him put a grand gesture over open communication then we have a problem. He did it with Luke (ah I love that moment) when he “hopes for reciprocation,” but he couldn’t have done that with her?! He couldn’t have said: “can we talk for a minute” and she could’ve aired her grievances to him in person. He could of said what she still means to him, apologized, and in the end she could have said “I’m sorry but I just don’t feel that way about you anymore. You hurt me and I had to move on. But I forgive you blah blah blah..” and he could’ve walked away and still felt rejected and Rory could’ve still slept with Dean ruining her perfect image like the writers wanted but at least we would have gotten closure!! I’m being harsh but I love this show for what it is of course, but I can still criticize, okay :)

    This is partly me being annoyed by a lot of Logan defense videos but if you ever wanted to, I'd love to watch a separate video of yours where you go into Jess's character and his relationships with Luke and Liz, in particular. Re:family trauma- I think it’s interesting to look at how Emily is being treated by Richard’s extremely critical mother. Emily, to me, is trying to step up to her mother in law’s toxic ways to behave like ‘a true Gilmore’. I thought the introduction of that relationship was key in understanding Emily and then her journey when breaking off with Richard or in the revival makes a lot of sense. Being toxic is being a Gilmore, it’s constantly modelled by the great grandma and she probably hasn’t deconstructed that and becomes a toxic control freak over everyone else instead of healing and setting boundaries.

    I'd like to think, after revival even though Rory got pregnant, but Jess came back to be with her.He is Rory's Luke. also i dont care what y'all say but he was the best, he understood Rory the most, which Dean and logan could never. I really liked Dean in season 1, he was that perfect highschool boyfriend, but Jess was her soulmate, if that's a thing. Even Alexis admitted, writers tried to change Rory's character for her to become more relateable but she became trash of a person, on the other hand Jess had such a nice character development. However Jess could see what rory was becoming, He pushed her to go back to Yale, But he never stopped loving her for a moment. even in revival, The way he looked at her through the window, told her to write a book. Ughhh, literite fans were robbed really there were less scenes but chemistry was overflowing

    Ok so expect SEVERAL comments from me because this is THE DREAM COME TRUE as a fellow literati fan but on the Jess spinoff: I don't exactly know the entire story from behind-the-scenes about this and I'm not sure if the spinoff idea came after Milo Ventimiglia didn't sign on for another contract for gilmore girls post season 3 but from what I've heard, I think Jess's more general lack of screentime post season 2 and then season 3 is because a) Milo /was/ offered a further 6 year contract for staying on the show because Amy loves him so much (like I am not kidding,that woman has said on paper that she loves him like her own son and if she had a guarantee that if she were to have her own kids and they were like Milo, she would've done it), but he turned it down because I can only assume he didn't want to get stuck in the show while still being in his 20s, and b) because of the spinoff being planned. Now I don't know if the spinoff was brought in as an alternative for keeping Milo because while he didn't have a direct contract with Amy, he DID have a contract with WB from what I know, but I also feel like Jess is somewhat the "best option" for a spinoff mainly because a) he doesn't come from Stars Hollow, and b) his overall character/writing/vibes reflect upon a world that is really totally different from what Stars Hollow and its residents are. It's like one of the first scenes in 2x05 where he walks out of the diner and looks around, and his completely sullen face and even darker clothes are in direct contrast with his surroundings as Stars Hollow is like this almost-magical, surreal place where everything is quirky and fun and nothing bad ever happens in this place as opposed to like, New York where Jess grew up in. So this is my general GUESS as to why they might have planned for his spinoff, but unfortunately it didn't come through because of apparent budgetary reasons because they would've had to shoot in Venice Beach, CA, and most of the later shows for the later CW network were shot in Canada bc it's cheaper but was "masked" into looking like the US. I also feel like a spinoff option was just viable even for a show like Gilmore Girls because a show like Buffy did give a spinoff to Angel after the end of season 3 back then.

    Yes, yes and yes again! I think the writers just don't respect their viewers, otherwise how else can you explain it?) maybe somewhere there are their comments for what reason they leaked the hero Jess? After the failed spin-off, he showed up so promisingly at the end of season 4 and what? Rory makes the choice to sleep with Dean. There are so many shows with troubled couples who end up staying together. And their relationship could have developed so beautifully and interestingly. And end the series there instead of waiting for Milo and Alexis to break up and in life. Basically you said it all in the video! Thanks 😊

    I was initially sad that the spin-off was not approved, but then i thought about how left it would've gone. Jess was too good for Rory. For a kid who was physically and emotionally abused and neglected he turned out to be a really good human being. He deserves so much more than the biggest fish in a small conservative pond

    Jess got on my nerves mostly because of the way he was portrayed. Gilmore girls definitely glosses over things and doesn’t look underneath the surface unless it’s the main characters and that is a mayor weakness in the show. The seventh season has become one of my favorites because of the character development that includes background on some of these characters. Ironically it did not involve the Palladinos. Later In the revival Jess is CLEARLY too good for Rory and honestly so are all her exes.

  • @HarperArrow

    I will never understand how Jess still kept in touch with Rory after she came to see him in his publishing house, just so she could use him to cheat on Logan, the way he cheated on her. I actually hope Rory felt shame seeing how Jess kept going and reached his goals despite everyone telling him not to. And her hearing she's not good enough one time and dropping everything made her into a wuss. Jess is too good for her anyway! Also, cannot WAIT FOR THE LOGAN VIDEO!

    I the the main thing for me with Jess vs. Dean was that Jess had a redemption arc and Dean just repeated the same patterns. Dean just learned to break up with Rory sooner when he saw her fall for Logan. Where as Jess grew up and matured into what younger Rory saw in him.

    My son was about the same age as Jess when Gilmore Girls was on and shared a lot of his traits. Watching Jess being so self-destructive was painful (like Jess, he came out on the other side just fine). I still resent that they turned Rory into a vapid rich girl and how much they changed Dean from the original bookish smart guy. Are there other shows that change their characters so much in ways that seem so inconsistent? The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Toby on The West Wing.

    I agree a lot with your point of views on jess and I would have loved to see him more on the show as well. One thing I mostly wanted to comment on was the Luke's sister having jess at a young age. when jess's character is introduced in season 2, he's 17 years old which is Rory's age as well. I believe that jess was born either the same year as Rory or a year older, so that means that Liz had him when she was about 16 or 17. I don't think she could have had him at 18 cause then he would have been like two years older than Rory. on another note, I also wanted to say that he's my favorite character of the show and I would have liked if they went more into his story, like they did with that annoying dean. I am also sad that Rory didn't stay with jess but also relived because jess deserved better.

    I agree. We saw too little Jess. They should have done more with Rory and Jess. Their chemistry was off the charts. Also, he matured in the best way possible. He was troubled when he was young and also projected that onto Rory but they were best for each other at the wrong time. They challenged each other. Jess redeemed himself majorly though and came out the best of all 3.

    I agree with everything you mentioned in this video. Jess made mistakes and had bad moments but out of all of Rory's major love interests, he had the most positive character development throughout the original show and the revival. If they met as adults and if Rory didn't have any contact with her grandparents and their endless privileges, they could've had a solid chance at happiness. They had great compatibility and chemistry. He kept her down-to-earth (as much as he could with her taking after her grandparents more and more as the show progressed). He was the humble love interest she needed to have. They just had bad timing. They weren't in the best places to really love each other when they were teens.
