The Doors never did do 'just songs' brother! Glad it took you on a journey. That's what they do. In the context of 20th Century American culture and music, they rightfully take an important place.

you are ahead of the curve w/ most of the guys on youtube who try to digest this band & relay meaning... indeed its metaphor. getting that, will get you on the right track w/ this band. the lead singer saw himself as poet. he wrote poetry, made films at ucla & digested tons of literature by the age of 21. all w/ an iq of 150... you picked one of their strongest pieces. the doors were one of the all time great bands in re to longer epic pieces. a precursor to pink floyd when they went darker post syd... meaning its obviously open to various ideas, but using symbolic metaphor again indeed helps. its a philosophical piece & imo ties to one seeking understanding & indiv freedom from institutional control. music means the spirit. the driving force to beauty, joy, creativity & desire. if you let the system take that from you or you sell it out, you will implode. however, if you hold onto that & seek it w/in & w/out & cherish it, you find your life blood.... then the theme scopes out broader to the culture & how society, nations even an economic system can aggressively attack resources (look what theyve done to the earth) & demand control over you... when that system presses against dont give in. seek your intellectual & physical freedom. embrace passion & find beauty. save someone from the corruption you see that too are in pain from (scream of the butterfly... come back into my arms)... essentially, a strong moral code line in the sand for finding & establishing indiv liberation & protecting it for like minds. demand the ancient spirit to reveal itself (persian light, save us Jesus) to reconnect around this crucial valuable life blood in a corrupt power mad world. timeless song.

I loved your interpretation of the scream of the butterfly! I had never thought it as a last scream for help when somebody is on their last breath. To me, it was more of the scream from mother nature telling asking us, "what have we done to her? Why have we done this to her?"

The lyrics & music can mean whatever you want them to mean, that's the magic of The Doors. I ate mushrooms and listened to this whole album and when this song came on it really filled me with a sense of revolution.

Reaction liked, analysis too! Bro, "When the Music's over", "The End" - I hardly even call these "songs", they're musical drama w/ several act, like damn opera! Really monumental pieces of art. BTW, I was staring exactly like this (10:53), when I hear that part for the first time. I was 16. 😃👍

It is an organ, I think a Hammond Organ. They also have something on the organ so they can do bass. They only have drums, guitar and organ. You need to review more Doors music this is only a beginning. Try Roadhouse Blues, Riders on the Storm, Break on Through, Back Door Man, Love me Two Times, Five to One, Light My Fire, Moonlight Drive, just to name a few. Jim Morrison was quite a poet and also published his book of poems "An American Prayer".

They have singer too... ☝️😃 It was Fender Rhodes Bass, Ray was putting it on top of his Vox Continental, as one may see on some concert records.

Brother I like how you dissect this song. Death intrigged Morrison a lot. Maybe in one hand he was afraid and in other he knew that there is plenty more outside this material life. I think he drew our attention on that through his songs.

Another recording that is a signpost on my road to maturity, Times were different. You got to see this in the context of the seventies. After the Vietnam war was over, people were left with a feeling of disenchantment with everything, Strange engough the series "China Beach' captured a lot of these feelings for me, who is a European.

The instrumental you were asking about is an organ, a guitar, and another layer of guitar dubbed over it. "Our fair sister" refers back to Mother Earth. He asks the same question twice out of exasperation. "What have they done to the Earth? What have they done to our fair sister?" BTW: This is the best reaction to this song that I've heard, and I've heard a lot.

Great review! Morrisons lyrics were mostly very symbolic and not always obvious to interpret but i think you nailed it in your analysis. Love how you pointed out the scream of the butterfly sound effect on guitar...i never put that together before

I watch too many Doors reacts. I just fell hard for this band at 12 or 13. I studied Jim. I read his poetry. I read his favorite poets and writers. I'm now 53 and last year after a dna test and much research I found out I'm Jims cousin. I should probably add that I was adopted by and raised by the neighbors and was completely clueless as to who I was and where I came from. I also find out theres more lords and ladies in my family history on both sides than you would ever want to believe.

They used a keyboard bass instead of guitar bass and organ. Ray Manzarek played both at the same time, each with a different hand.
