It’s 1981 and I am seven years old. My father is driving me in his 1974 stepside Dodge pick up truck and he’s taking me to his favorite fishing grounds in Los Angeles right outside the Marina del Rey jetties just next-door to Venice. This beautiful melody comes on the radio, and I can see my dad following along singing softly as he is shifting the three speed lever on the column of the truck while he’s holding a beer in his hand 😅 My father has been long gone after that but every time I hear this beautiful melody. I am taking back straight to that beautiful afternoon driving in my dad’s truck as the sunsets. Things are not too bad.. but I do miss my father.

Masterpiece. My hat's off to the Doobie Brothers. How fitting that this song should be the 500th Number One Rock single since Bill Haley and the Comets performed the first number one Rock single, "Rock Around the Clock," in 1955.

Way back in the day, McDonald was a first call studio musician so playing 2 keyboards at the same time would not be much of a problem for him. However, this song is especially difficult for keyboardists to play since the tricky piano riffs with tricky hand positions are constant throughout right to the end. And then he's still able to add in synth/strings keyboard in the left hand while playing the tricky right hand riffs *AND* singing it perfectly. That's some serious talent.

Earth was formed somewhere not to long ago, The Mk ultra fools don't see, Tryin' hard to Procreate, What had yet to be created, all of this life, did i muster a smile, For my biblical tale, Never coming near what I wanted to say, Only to realize, Globe never really was, God, should have a place in your life, the bible, never made you think twice, jesus rises from deaths doorstep, Anybody else would surely know, He's watching us sin, But what a fool believes, he reads, No NASA man has the power, to reason away, Earth seems, to be, Is always better than Big Bangs, There's nothing at all? keep sending love. Somewhere back in Time long ago, Where you can still believe there's a God who made life, Someday, somewhere, Jesus will return, God should have a place in your life, the bible never made you think twice, jesus rises from deaths doorstep, Anybody else would surely know, He's watching us sin, But what a Fool believes, he reads, No NASA man has the power, to reason away, Earth seems, to be, Is always better than Big Bangs, There's nothing at all? It is so difficult to name a "favorite" song there have been so many awesome rock songs in my life, but this one ... never fails to make me fall to pieces, takes me back to when I was so young but still remember that weird feeling in my heart the first time I heard this. If I had to name the best song ever (other than classical) it would be this one. I am not even sure why.

Michael McDonald's voice is nothing less than a gift from whoever created this universe. I could listen to him sing Gregorian chant, nursery rhymes, Tuva throat singing, or a complete reading of the New York City registry of deeds ... it doesn't matter what he's saying or singing. All that matters is the *sound* of his voice that has been so special. Nobody has ever had a voice like his. Although, if I were forced to find a similar voice, I might suggest Mel Torme. They both had/have voices that are supremely velvety.

What is really special, you guys, is learning how Michael came on with the Doobies. The Doobies have a tremendous rockumentary, called "Let the Music Play", it chronicles their career. The band members talk a ton in it, so it is special. Also, their manager Bruce Cohn talks, and producer Ted Templeman. These men are very special, and have a bearing that is so interesting. What I learned, is that the Doobies were bad ass going in to the late 70's. They were HUGE. And then front man Tommy Johnston got sick. Tommy is such a great guitar player, but also was a super soulful singer kind of like Michael. Tommy and rhythm guitar player/singer Pat Simmons were the heart of the Doobies. I didn't know them back then, I was getting in to the beginnings of 80's British metal & American hair metal, lol. But I learned about this in Let the Music Play, about a year ago. Tommy couldn't sing, they were fucked. They went on a little bit with just Pat singing, but Pat knew that wouldn't last. Just a bit previously, the Doobies added a guitar player, Skunk Baxter, who had gotten fired from Steely Dan. Well, when Tommy went down, Skunk said "Hey, I know this guy who came in to the studio and did backing vocals with Steely Dan - Michael McDonald". Songs like Peg, and maybe another one I think. Well, the guys said "Ok", and Michael flew out for an audition. The guys flipped.Out. Incredible Doobies bass player Tiran Porter took an immediate liking to Michael, and invited him over to his house, where he had a studio in his basement. In the basement, Michael unveiled his keyboard driven pop groove, sang 3 songs that he had written and were in his back pocket, and Tiran, a veteran of several Doobies tours, flipped the fuck out. Tiran recorded a tape, and took it to the guys. They were already very happy with Michael, because he swooped-in and saved their butts by coming out and singing Doobies songs without Tommy, and saved their huge tour. But they had no idea he could write songs. They just met him! At that point, Michael was a hired gun. Maybe one and done? Well......then it came time to introduce Michael to legendary producer Ted Templeman. Pat said "Mike, play one of your songs for Ted". Michael was nervous, and said "Well this song isn't really finished". Pat said "Go ahead". So Michael started, and he played Taking It to the Streets. Bumm.... bummm bumm..."You don't know me but I'm your bROTHHER"..and Ted's eyes popped out of his sockets and his mouth was agape. In front of him, was a young Michael McDonald, who Ted later called "The most talented musician I ever sat with in the studio". And thus....the Michael McDonald era was born :) Magic. History. Beauty. Excellence.

@@adambutterfield2307 Hi Adam. I think I may have gotten it wrong on Skunk being fired. I think he said "fired" in the rockumentary, but that might be want he wanted to say at that point. Since then, he has said he "left". He gave a reason: "I felt that the direction that Steely Dan was headed was much more of a studio and not live-oriented in concept. I think Walter and Donald wanted to carry the studio concept to its “nth” degree. I joined the Doobie Bros because I felt that there was an incredible amount of raw talent and had a bit of a vision of what that band might become. When I asked Michael McDonald to join the Doobie Bros, I felt that vision turn into a reality."

Being a drummer, I have got to give it up for him. He plays exactly what this song calls for....straight ahead, let the vocals, keys and organ shine. Put 10 drummers in the studio on this one and you'd have 10 totally different grooves and I can almost guarantee half would over play. If I sat down to play this, I would definitely have been much busier but this is absolute perfection for groove. Simple, straight ahead and no fluff. The level of talent in the Doobie's is off the charts, always has been and each of the players are masters at their craft, playing exactly what the song calls for, nothing more and that's why I think it's perfect.

txdrummer5150 What I find incredible about the Doobies is that they always had two drummers playing on their concerts. You can see them both here (Keith Knudsen and John Hartman) plus Bobby LaKind on congas, all playing in remarkable sync. Always loved the dual drummer rhythm section.
