The dogs that could stop Mongolian grasslands turning to desert

The bankhar, a guardian dog, is being reintroduced to protect livestock from predators and remove herders’ incentive to keep more animals and kill predators.
Herd animals have tripled in number in recent years, causing overgrazing and trampling of the grass.

The video explains quite clearly how having an efficient shepherd dog like the bankhar allows herders to have a managable and sustainable size of sheep instead of having to resource to raising a large overheard to account for all the sheep they would lose. This means less land used to feed and sustain the sheep, hence the practice of using the dogs has a direct impact on conserving grassland.

To all those who are wondering why these dogs would help to prevent desertification, herders used to ride horse while herding. The grasslands can grow back from horse tracks pretty fast. It also limits the radius of each herder's movement. However, almost all modern herders use vehicles like motorcycles to herd. Their tracks were much more detrimental to the grassland, let along the pollutions along the way. They also tend to cover longer routes due to pressure for more grass and improving mobility. In this case, herding dogs are actually really nice for both the environment and the herders themselves. Humans no longer need to spend as much time moving the stocks around, and the grassland has less pressure for exceeding carrying capacity and can regenerate faster.

It also helps herders not to have large herds to make up for any losses by wild animal attacks. Too many goats in one area strips the land of grass.

From what I understood, dogs as protectors of herd practice was stopped for a while, during those times herders use other means to protect the herd and increase the herd's population to cover the losses, and this causes overgrazing. So returning the dog as protector may reduce overgrazing because there is no need to increase the herd's population.

Yes they are quite similar. Because they are closely related. In fact we call Tibetan mastiff Tibetan bankhar just like bankhar. But there are quite different. The face is slimmer and the body is not as big . And the they shed because Mongolia has 4 seasons so in the summer they shed to cool off . And the vocal range is quite different. And bankhar is very old breed. It's believed to be originated from Indian black wolves around 12000 years ago . But only 2 or 3thousand years ago it took it's final form

I would have been interested to know whether they actively train the dogs to attack predators or whether say a fox would just keep away seeing the large dogs with the herd. I'm English and I know that certain breeds (e.g. Border Collies) have a herding instinct and even untrained pets naturally try to round up sheep so the herding bit is probably fairly easy.
