The Dogs of Chernobyl - Abandoned In The Zone
We need your help to save the Dogs of Chernobyl!
Many people think of Chernobyl as a post-apocalyptic wasteland, but there are thousands of workers at the nuclear power plant and nearly 1,000 stray dogs that live in the surrounding areas. These animals are largely the descendants of pets of people who were evacuated after the nuclear disaster in 1986.

What else would you expect from the Soviet Union? They starved their own people and killed more in gulags. I’m not surprised they tried to kill all the dogs.

The dog descendants now are not radioactive but you can bet your butt their ancestors right after the accident were. People died of radiation poisoning for miles around. I love animals too but you have to consider the safety of workers who were already risking their lives to save others. We know so much more about radiation now *because of* the Chernobyl accident, they were doing what they thought they had to in nightmarish conditions
This is beautiful and so nice! Thank you so so so much for doing this! Im so glad there is people like you in the world! ❤️😊❤️❤️❤️❤️

As I was watching a video about chernobyl children, I thought to myself, What about the animals left behind? Cats? dogs? bunnies etc. This made my anxiety go down a little. You are amazing for actually caring and trying to help these lovely angels. I wish I could come and help you!

My heart is broken into pieces learning of what their ancestors went through, being cruelly murdered while the contaminated people were saved! It made no sense! I’m so happy to hear of your amazing program & efforts to save the ones around the area today! Thank you!! I will be donating! 💔❤️🙏🏾🐾

So sad i will never leave my dog I Love him,his name is TERY (polish name )😭
The scene in HBO’s show Chernobyl depicting people abandoning their dogs made me sick to my stomach. What happened, in reality, was way worse than what the show depicted. An eyewitness account describes how, "Dogs were howling, trying to get on the buses. The soldiers were pushing them out again, kicking them. The dogs ran after the buses for ages." The Soviet government's treatment of these animals was disgusting, but so were the actions of the individual pet owners. If you adopt an animal they are part of your family. In a disaster, you get your ENTIRE family out with you. If the government says you can't take your pet on the bus, take your own car! Residents were lied to and told the evacuation was only temporary but that is no excuse. I would NEVER leave my pet alone in such a toxic environment, not even for a minute. These pets were left with no food or shelter. They were left to die slowly from radiation. All the soldiers who forced people to abandon their pets in Chernobyl deserved to die from radiation poisoning or cancer. Bye. You’re a horrible person and I'm glad your off the planet.
May GOD Bless these Dog's.
Thank you Angels! ❤️
It makes perfect sense that the dogs would actively seek out humans. Centuries of selective breeding has essentially turned them into a domestic symbiotic species, inherently inclined to favor being around humans.
But I am troubled by what happens when the great kindness of this voluntary work ends? When does it end, or has it already? Such mild gentle dogs and pups, at peace with their lot, and happy to mix with their human visitors. Someone please tell me what happens next.

We are currently finishing up the first year of a 5-year program. We are developing a long-term response plan including rescue, rehoming, feeding programs and continued medical care. Stay tuned for more information!
Thank You!!!!
I love the music in the background it's stunning.
If you want to secure huge amounts of funding to take care of these animals get science grants from governments to study radiation affects on the canine and feline population. This way the animals can be electronically tagged and taken care of. You can also start an sponsor program where people from all over the world can "adopt" a dog. The dog remains at the site but updates and photos a few times a year are sent to the sponsor to keep contact.
I will be donating for sure

I’m crying
As someone who absolutely adores dogs, it really pains me to say this..but: SHOULD these dogs be taken back into normal society without some sort of radiation/gene therapy treatment? At the very least. Like I see you petting them and such, but I am unsure if this is actually safe to have them interacting. The dogs themselves probably have a built in immunity to toxic radiation, but I am unsure if it is safe.

From following this program over the years, I understand that they only adopt out the dogs that have low levels and they are usually young ones who have not been exposed as long. The others are caught and spayed when possible.
You wäre so Beautiful. Thank you dog Angels😍😍😍
God bless you all. 💞
This is great dogs realy are mans best friend thier wild dogs but like people im shour alot of them are dumped their being so friendly
- To the people who say "I would never leave my dog behind", 1. The people were told to leave their pets behind and that they would return in 3 days, but that never happened. 2. The reason they had to leave their dogs is because of the high levels of radioactive contamination. The military did not want to spread contamination, and that's why the dogs were left.

Can't you find homes for them? Our is the contact with the contamination make them unable to be shipped out of the country? They are such beautiful dogs I know many people in the USA who would want to adopt them.

Currently, according to the laws of Ukraine, it is illegal to take animals outside of the Chernobyl exclusion zone. We are collecting medical data which we will present to the Ukrainian government, hoping to demonstrate that these animals do not represent a hazard to the public and hopefully work with the government to pass new laws which will allow us to establish a rescue and adoption program. Stay tuned for updates!

Vangie LaVelle You got PETA that kills 98% of stray animals. I'm pretty sure shipping stray animals from other continent while can't deal with own strays is a bad idea.

Fobija 13 The US is already importing vast numbers of rescue animals from other countries. According to the USDA, shelters IMPORTED more than 300,000 dogs in 2013. The problem doesn't lie with the numbers, but with the way shelters deal with them (they are often unwilling to adopt out dogs for minor reasons).

The problem isn't with the entire US. There are just some shelters (like those run by PETA) that do a bad job. However, there are plenty of other organizations that are actually helping animals successfully.
It is a dangerous area but i see everybody going there!

3:47Does a n y o n e know what breed that dog is? I know it's mainly GSD but it isn't a full bred because of the gait. My dog looks not exactly but very similar to it but I have no idea what he is. I've seen a lot of dogs in Eastern Europe/Spain looking like that but can never find a breed name. It could just be a cross between a GSD and another Shepherd, but I'm not sure. PLEASE, if anyone knows please respond. This has been driving me crazy for 6 years.

What is that guitar song?
I thought u guys cant pet them?
Que pechochos mis hijitos
Eh... the cats would do great. They'll revert back to their wild state and start thriving. The dogs won't be a problem once nature takes its course. They'll die off from from a good ol fashion culling by wolves and bears dealing with threats to their pups and getting rid of a mutt infestation.
I never cry when nature kill humans with tsunamis and earthquakes we are the crap of the universe.
And what about cats where are d?
❤️🍀🙏🏻
Can they be put up for adoption?
😢 poor doggys but 1 question 😐☝ why the dogs after 3 generations arent with 3 legs or 1 eye behind the head?😐???????
Get them neutered too.
It s all ok with dogs normal
Lol
Just leave these wild dogs alone!
Asia eat dog nice
Wow you touched the dog now your going to get radiation poisoning.
So you want us to give money to help stop them breeding, why would i do that there free not strays lol maybe when people first left them they was stray now there free
That's why it's important to spay and neuter pets.
