The Dogs of Chernobyl - Abandoned In The Zone

We need your help to save the Dogs of Chernobyl!
Many people think of Chernobyl as a post-apocalyptic wasteland, but there are thousands of workers at the nuclear power plant and nearly 1,000 stray dogs that live in the surrounding areas. These animals are largely the descendants of pets of people who were evacuated after the nuclear disaster in 1986.

The dog descendants now are not radioactive but you can bet your butt their ancestors right after the accident were. People died of radiation poisoning for miles around. I love animals too but you have to consider the safety of workers who were already risking their lives to save others. We know so much more about radiation now *because of* the Chernobyl accident, they were doing what they thought they had to in nightmarish conditions

The scene in HBO’s show Chernobyl depicting people abandoning their dogs made me sick to my stomach. What happened, in reality, was way worse than what the show depicted. An eyewitness account describes how, "Dogs were howling, trying to get on the buses. The soldiers were pushing them out again, kicking them. The dogs ran after the buses for ages." The Soviet government's treatment of these animals was disgusting, but so were the actions of the individual pet owners. If you adopt an animal they are part of your family. In a disaster, you get your ENTIRE family out with you. If the government says you can't take your pet on the bus, take your own car! Residents were lied to and told the evacuation was only temporary but that is no excuse. I would NEVER leave my pet alone in such a toxic environment, not even for a minute. These pets were left with no food or shelter. They were left to die slowly from radiation. All the soldiers who forced people to abandon their pets in Chernobyl deserved to die from radiation poisoning or cancer. Bye. You’re a horrible person and I'm glad your off the planet.

It makes perfect sense that the dogs would actively seek out humans. Centuries of selective breeding has essentially turned them into a domestic symbiotic species, inherently inclined to favor being around humans.

If you want to secure huge amounts of funding to take care of these animals get science grants from governments to study radiation affects on the canine and feline population. This way the animals can be electronically tagged and taken care of. You can also start an sponsor program where people from all over the world can "adopt" a dog. The dog remains at the site but updates and photos a few times a year are sent to the sponsor to keep contact.

As someone who absolutely adores dogs, it really pains me to say this..but: SHOULD these dogs be taken back into normal society without some sort of radiation/gene therapy treatment? At the very least. Like I see you petting them and such, but I am unsure if this is actually safe to have them interacting. The dogs themselves probably have a built in immunity to toxic radiation, but I am unsure if it is safe.

    - To the people who say "I would never leave my dog behind", 1. The people were told to leave their pets behind and that they would return in 3 days, but that never happened. 2. The reason they had to leave their dogs is because of the high levels of radioactive contamination. The military did not want to spread contamination, and that's why the dogs were left.

We are collecting medical data which we will present to the Ukrainian government, hoping to demonstrate that these animals do not represent a hazard to the public and hopefully work with the government to pass new laws which will allow us to establish a rescue and adoption program. Stay tuned for updates!

Fobija 13 The US is already importing vast numbers of rescue animals from other countries. According to the USDA, shelters IMPORTED more than 300,000 dogs in 2013. The problem doesn't lie with the numbers, but with the way shelters deal with them (they are often unwilling to adopt out dogs for minor reasons).

The problem isn't with the entire US. There are just some shelters (like those run by PETA) that do a bad job. However, there are plenty of other organizations that are actually helping animals successfully.
