I do like that 13 didn't go through with it. It shows a continuation of the Doctor's character growth, they have come a long long long way since the PTSD trauma bonding with Rose over a thousand years ago. And they got to experience a true long lasting relationship with River for the first time in a long long time. It's interesting.

At the end of the day, impermanence is the one constant in the Doctor's life. It's a theme that's brought up again and again, especially in the modern era. The nature of the Doctor's existence means they can never truly settle down with anyone. Even with River --- Twelve was able to spend 24 years with her, but for an ancient being, that's like the blink of an eye. Eventually, they still had to go their separate ways. As Ten said in series 2, they have to "move on, alone." That's just a fact of life for the Doctor.

@@unionsock no need to be so harsh. im a thasmin shipper and have been since day one but you've gotta understand that the people who say they didn't see anything are right, just as we, too, are right. chibs said he didn't ever explicitly write thasmin in, however there was enough subtext there for him to be able to canonically write it in. what this means is that everyone who saw thasmin in past series' is right but that doesn't make those who didn't see it wrong. :)

@@unionsock there is no nuance to this relationship. Chibnall admitted they only made this a thing because of the fans obsession with thasmin as a concept. There’s no real love there. It’s forced and it is NOT developed well, and has minimal build up to it.

I’m really gonna miss her. When she first regenerated into existence, I was questioning my gender and I realized I was trans. I though she could inspire me to be a woman. It turns out, it was the other way round ( well sort of ) She helped me except my real gender ( genderfluid/non binary ). I thought she would help me be a good woman, she didn’t just do that. She helped Ryan and Graham become better men. And now she’s done the same with Dan. And she helped yaz be a better woman. She did the same thing with me. She helped me become a better man when I’m in boy mode. And when I’m in girl mode, she helped me be a better woman. In fact, because of her, I’m finally beginning to become comfortable with who I see in the mirror. I’m gonna really sad when she regenerates… Edit: She also helped me be a good person ( non binary mode )

Oh MAN, this was beautiful. The part where the Doctor says "I wish this could go on forever." is literally me on so many things like being a kid/teen forever. If only I could. And I hope I could makes some new friends who are fans of the 13th Doctor, though it's quite rare. I have a friend who loves Doctor Who. My family does too. Thumbs up to Jodie and Mandip! Also John Bishop! 👍👍 By the way, I'm GLAD the pandemic is going down. I often wish it NEVER happened, but that's the way it is in the world. Guess we gotta live with it whether we like it or not.

Can anyone help me understand this part? When the doctor said this at an earlier scene, "Well, dates are not something I really do, you know. I mean, I used to. Have done. And if I was going to, believe me, it'd be with you. I think you're one of the greatest people I've ever known. Including my wife." Did she mean that she would prefer Yaz over all of her past relationships? Even River? Because if it is how I took it (which I do admit I could have taken it wrong) then I feel like Chibnall totally devalued all of the relationships the Doctor has had before. Everything with River, with Rose, friendships romantic or otherwise. I really hope that's not how Chibnall meant it (because if it is, I'll just imagine the Doctor didn't say it, that it was Writer's Folly.)

Simple: Chibnall can't write & doesn't understand the Doctor's character. He's using a superlative because he can't come up with something unique, honestly I don't buy that the "fam" were even so much as friends. They never got real bonding moments, just unearned shilling *telling* us they like each other. Personally, I chose to interpret it as the Doctor trying to make Yaz feel good about herself despite turning her down so she wouldn't think it'sbecause she's not good enough or anything like that (overcompensating after the debacle with Martha) 13 always came off as fake cheerful & enthusiastic on the surface, but ice cold underneath & not really caring about or trusting any of them. The reverse of how the Doctor is usually a bit of a cocky jerk but actually cares so much deep down - again, Chibnall can't write. Worst writing I've seen in anything that wasn't a 14 year old's first fanfiction. And he explicitly told Whittaker NOT to watch past seasons, so of course it felt like a different character. The guy said in an interview that he didn't want the job, had no plans & submitted first drafts. Having Yaz get a crush was actually an idea by Gill & Whittaker themselves that was only sort of thrown in for the last season. I mean I'm glad they threw it on cause else it would have been even blander, but it shows there was just no care put into these characters. I think even the ppl who like thazmin just like the IDEA of "the Doctor but in a lesbian ship", and i mean I would like that too, but it just wasn't done well. There wasn't anything to Yaz supposed 'love' but hero worship. I just can't see her as being on par with Rose, River & Clara. That had, like, planned-out emotional writing with themes & unique lines. You might compare her to the various one-shot love interests like Grace, Joan or Astrid, at best. I think part of it is that Chib seems to see the Doctor as above such silly things as getting attached & that's just not it. They always get attached. They're really bad at not getting attached. That's the main reason for their suffering that they always get attached again despite all the losses. Just look at Ten trying & failing to be a Lonesome Cowboy(TM) in early series 3 and by the end he was spilling his sorrows to Martha or gushing about whatever cool thing she did to help defeat the villain. Whether it's in a love interest-y way or friendship, it's still attachment. I don't think the Doctor was any less broken up from losing Amy or Donna than any of the love interests. Even when Martha left, which was a happy departure of her free will, it was pretty emotional & they had DT do his big sad eyes thing. They barely had 13 say *anything* when Graham & Ryan left, & same for Dan.

You would think that after all this time the Doctor would have figured out a way to download River Song into a new body and that way she/he/whatever he decides to change into on down the line. Or why after all these years could the Doctor not find a way to cypher his/her/he’s time lordiness out of Donna Nobles’ mind so that she could remember the Doctor without her head exploding.

Also this is the second time the Doctor was cursed by an Eternal. I always view the Fourth Doctor's regeneration as the fruition of the Black Guardian's curse. And the Thirteenth's is the fruition of Time's. I view it as, for example, the Black Guardian robbed the Fourth Doctor of the strength to hang onto his scarf for just a fraction of a second, and so he fell. And Time could've used what little power they'd gained from the Ravagers to push the Qurunx's beam slightly further than the Master might have otherwise managed when he directed it at the Doctor. The Eternals have limited power without a mortal to sponge off of, but I think they could manage just tiny things like that, enough to satisfy their curse.

The Doctor never wanted to feel love again ever since what happened with Clara. But after the adventures with Yaz, what started as a friendship became something more. I don't think they'll end the 13th and Yaz's story like that. I think somewhere maybe season 15 or 16, they'll either do a special Doctor Who episode where Jodie comes back and meets Yaz again or do a season where the 15th or 16th Doctor is the 13th once again where she'll reunite with Yaz once again, do adventures and finally do some romance stuff

"sooner or later, it'll hurt". Rose, Donna, Bill Potts, Sarah Jane, The Brigadier, and most painfully River sondand every other companion they lost. Their love for River spanned multiple regenerations, and continued into being a woman as 13. She knows it always hurts because she has lived so long and lost so many. And she knew someday she'd lose everything when she'd regenerate. She was right. But she gained a new life as 13 became 14. Then bigeneration allowed 14 to have a good life. 15 is having adventures while 14 is trying to settle down, if just for a while. But 14 will have his hearts broken once more either by regeneration or by losing Donna and her family as he lives centuries and they live at oldest to be a century old. Unless that regeneration energy that Donna and Rose let go still altered their biology to live longer than an average human, even without that energy still in them. Maybe it enhanced their lifespans a little, even without the energy still inside them. But either way, the doctor will never be able to be tied to anyone really. The only one he has forever is Jack. And even Jack will change into rhe face of Boe, and then die at the end of the universe. Though the doctor potentially could keep Jack around on infinite adventures through every face, one day he gas to ket Jack literally lose his head to become the Face, then he would know he dies one day. Even immortal beings can never truly be there for the doctor forever. The only one who technically will be is the Master who, unless he changes to actually be good like Missy wanted to be before becoming the Master from 13's run, will always be on the opposing side to the Doctor. Unless the master bigenerated and one joined the doctor and the doctor gave saud good master who would always be on his side regenerations to be with him always.

I haven't seen Jodie's Doctor, but I think her performance here just sold it for me.

I LOVE THEM ♥️

God now I have two possible endings for The Centenary Special, first version is that The Doctor will hold back her regeneration just like 10th and 12th, and she decides to say goodbye to Yaz and Dan but before she leaves them Yaz and Doctor will kiss and Yaz in tears will let her go, or Yaz will stay with The Doctor again and she will see her regenerate to Fourteenth Doctor and they will have the last adventure together in first episode of season 14.

Aaaaaand I'm definitely not crying. Again...

This was a beautiful scene.

Poor Yaz. And poor Doctor. I wish it could go one forever-for both of them.

I could've shipped Thasmin but man was there 0 build-up or chemistry. It's been a while, but I can't remember the Doctor so much as flirting with Yaz? I was expecting this to go down like it did with Martha Jones, but of course not. Martha continues to get the short end of the stick. And for Chibnall to compare this relationship to Rose or River is just ridiculous.

Another missed opportunity by Chibnall to not give this angle more screen time instead of throwaway lines in Series 11 and 12 and only give it 13's last 2 episodes to really bring it to the forefront. God I'm glad he's gone after the centenary.

How many times has the Doctor fallen in love for NuWho, alone, and I never thought they'd actually get this close to admitting it!!

The whole story with Yaz being in love with The Doctor did seem like it came out of nowhere. Not that I'm against it, but it seems like it was never part of the story and rushed in there at the end.

100% Chibnall never intended Yaz to be a romantic interest, but fans shipped them, so he was convinced to just throw some romantic tension in their for attention. But because he never meant for Yaz to be a love interest there was no ultimate plan for resolving this story. It just abruptly ends.

This is actually what happened btw. Like confirmed with sources. It was never planned (there wasn't really a plan or arc for any of these characters tbh they were just... there.) & just thrown in at the suggestion of the actresses at the very end. I don't buy that these two were even friends, they just act like co-workers. Which is why I just can't see this as being on the level as properly planned-out stories with arc & theme & pathos like with Rose, River & Clara. I personally see it as either unrequited or at most comparable to one-off love interests like Astrid, Reinette or Grace Holloway. If they ever get another female Doctor maybe they can do the lesbian love interest thing *properly* and I'd be all for that, but this was just bad writing. And I mean what little they did canonically give us looks alot like just superficial hero worship ("She's the best person ever!", "She's always alright!") & that Yaz probably wouldn't have been happy with the Doctor anyway, cause she's too unreliable for Yaz to be ok with. ("I wish I'd never met her", "courage is doing is anyway")

It is an awful thing isn't it. Even if Yaz stayed with The Doctor all her life and even if she went to a far future planet with peak medical technology Yaz might live to be 120 years old, assuming she survives all her adventures. So that is the absolute best case scenario. Even then she will die and the Doctor will have lost someone she had spent all that time with. This also assumes that The Doctor will never get mortally wounded and regenerate into, if recent Who News is anything to go by, a black and gay Doctor. Which might cause problems for the female seemingly lesbian or Bisexual Yaz.

The Doctor falling in love too often cheapens it. Also, this type of relationship between Yaz and the Doctor feels sudden and forced considering there was so little build up in their first 2 seasons to it.

I agree 100%. To say that this type of manufactured tension is on par with Rose or River or Clara hurts the worth of those relationships. They stand out cause their unique, cause they had genuine chemistry. Yaz and 13 just don’t hit home for that.

I wish Dan would stick around. John Bishop is killing it in the role even if the character's just kind of an affable everyman. Kind of bummed he's isolated to series 13.

same i loved him. and series 13, beautiful clusterfuck that it was, wasn't really a story that allowed for the simple one-off adventures that i love. i hope we get to see more of him in other media :)

I haven’t seen this kinda manufactured spontaneous romance since Twilight. There was absolutely no tension or romantic sparks between these two before. Yaz is alright but to have The Doctor act like she’s on par with Rose or Clara or River is more annoying then anything else they’ve done.

Totally totally agree. It feels as if half way through S13, Chibbs suddenly went... i know...! -- then left it to the fans to join up dots that weren't there in the first place. There is just no chemistry in a romantic sense in anyway. even 10/ Rose, yeah, not a massive fan of it, but there was whole scenes throughout where the chemistry was *there*. This whole era is miles off the show it used to be.

It's a different kind of relationship, I see no problem with that. And I don't know how Diodati or Revolution of the Daleks is meant to be taken if not as buildup. The subtle, uncertain and bubbling up nature while they figure it out is a feature, not a bug.

@@Visquint actually if you read his interview more closely he had the idea after seeing mandips performance in season 11 and had Jodie push it at the end and started to layer things into season 12 , small things then add it to season 13. There was nothing platonic about the hologram scene

I'm really worried about how this will be handled next episode. The promo photos released on Twitter after the special and the watch tweet release two weeks ago during the big pop culture announcements heavily suggest 'Yaz' has been under The Master's influence since she ran away as a teenager and that 'our' Yaz in part is the result of The Master's long term machinations (becoming a police officer, helping people, The Doctor's most loyal companion, et ) and that this revelation will leave Thirteen and Yaz's history to become too toxic for Yaz, all of time and space is just open air, if they had met under different circumstances,, if Thirteen had been honest about the mess, maybe things could have been different ("You get people to go along with you"), with Dan leaving to look after Yaz and Yaz returns to work meets her shift officer from Once. I don't have a problem with this, but I'm very aware of Chibnall's "Life's turns on the page" writing in Broadchurch.

I think that’s a wet dream by the way made up by blokes consistently wanting as much trauma for these women as possible. It’s more likely that she’s been coerced and it had her feelings manipulated against the doctor / each other. One of those promo photos is posed and completely different to the screenshot , and another is a photo of ya with a gun protecting the doctor (as you can make out an outline of the doctor behind her ).
