So in other words, Bugsnax is a metaphor for depression, drugs, and addiction, and how it really isn't always so simple as to just pull yourself up by your bootstraps. You need someone else to help, someone to care, someone to believe in you. Drugs are the angler fish's light, and companionship is the true light. Be the light for people around you. The world need not be dark, and you have the power to make it a little brighter, even if it's only for a few people around you.

I think Gramble’s final line hits the hardest, the main reason why he keeps the creatures as pets is due to him losing his own family. He’s glad to finally be apart of a new family of bugsnax, unaware that he’ll never get the chance to start or be apart of a real family, ending his life with false love.

Doing a character's side quests has a point though. Even if their problem isn't fixed, they also realize they can't depend on Bugsnax. This makes it so that they will fight off the attacking Bugsnax in the ending section instead of eating them.

Two theories: 1. The leg in Floofty’s hut is Floofty’s leg since when you meet them they are missing their leg, plus the fur on the leg is the same color as Floofty, and Floofty is a scientist with quite twisted morals so it would make sense that they would sever their own leg. 2. The reason the Bugsnax are afraid of you (most of them) is that they can tell your allergic or immune to them. Also a reason Bugsnax is so much scarier than other horror games is that it looks like a sweet creature collecting game that becomes much scarier. It is a bit like how Sans from Undertale is so much creepier when he threatens you than if some other character did it, it’s because you are used to Sans being funny and cracking jokes so when he becomes scary it is only exemplified because of your prior experiences. It’s also like if someone told you they were going to show you something scary in one hour vs someone showing you something scary out of the blue, in the first example you are dreading what they’re going to show you so it is a much less intense but more drawn out feeling of terror, whereas in the second example it terrifies you instead of making you dread it so it’s more intense but only for a short time. Then when they do show you the picture in the first scenario (which in this analogy is advertised horror games) the reaction to it is less intense with less fight or flight instinct then in the second scenario (Bugsnax) it is more intense cause it is out of the ordinary, it is a surprise. Or you could also compare it to having an assignment due in a week, if you procrastinate to where there is just a few hours left it is a more intense but shorter feeling of stress (which in this analogy is akin to fear) whereas if you worked on it throughout the week it would be less intense but it would last for longer. Don’t quote me on any of this I am not a phycologist, or even an adult, or even a teen.

At its core, I think Bugsnax is a game about overcoming drug addiction as many of the characters say snax for the same reason people drugs. -Wambus is heartbroken over his wife leaving him and his failed farming career -Gramble has abandonment issues -Wiggle wants to be inspired (maybe LSD/magic mushrooms) -Chandlo wants to get stronger (steroids) -Cromdo wants to get rich (drug dealing) -Beffica has a hard time making/keeping friends -Snorpy is paranoid (antipsychotic meds/depressants) Triffany is dealing with the loss of a loved one Essentially, the goal of the game is to make each character overcome their drug dependency before their drug habit ruins them. You as the player have to help each character come to terms with their personal issues and save them by helping them seek out more healthy coping mechanisms than the drugs that are ruining their bodies and taking their lives.

Well, I was sceptical at first Ash, but your argument is just too well thought out and presented for me to debate it. Nice job, I'm now forever convinced that the cute looking bugsnacks game is really a horrifying....horror game. Put Dave in the VR headset!

This sort of poses the question as to why some Bugsnax are aggressive or scared of you if their sole purpose is to be eaten in order to reproduce. Well, I might have an answer to that. Recall in the first parts of the game, where you are fed a Bugsnak by Filbo, and thus reveals that the journalist is allergic to Bugsnax. This implies that the journalist is partially or entirely immune to the transformative, parasitic effects of Bugsnax consumption. Either their body expels the Bugsnax before the effects can occur, recognizing it as an invader, or they're simply immune to the effects from the get go, and are just allergic to a certain component in a Bugsnak, depends on what you believe I suppose. Anywho, it's likely that the Bugsnax recognized this from the get go, and act defensively in your presence (hiding, attacking you, etc), because you are the only known individual in the game that can consume a Bugsnak without succumbing to the parasitic effects. They see you as someone who could utterly destroy their system of reproduction if you decided to go on a binge eating session, as you can eat a Bugsnak, and prevent it from transforming you into other Bugsnax to reproduce. To put it more simply, they see you as a predator. This does pose the question as to how they actually found this out. My best guess is that they can just sense what they can transform and what they can't.

This might apply to the player but what about the other Grumpus? Even they have difficulty catching or even being attacked by the snax. It's made clear early on that Lizbert was the one who was good at catching them while almost every one else especially Eggabell and Filbo struggled to catch them.

My assumption is that since the time you find out you’re allergic takes place so early(not letting you see aggressive bugsnax until then) they only became hostile after that strabby wasn’t a part of you

BugSnax was my first ever platinum. Such a fun game! Though, I don’t think I’d recommend the game for kids, unless their parent plays it with them. Some of the topics are pretty heavy. (Did Ash mention the head chopping?! 😉)

This game messed me up. I am a different person now after completing this game.

Great and brave video Ash - someone at a major channel's been needing to make this video since the first trailers started appearing. The game is exactly the way it looked from the outset; beneath the wholesome themes, its heart may be pure but it's also dark. I hope the studio don't mind Access putting this video out; I know they've denied it being a horror game in the past when asked - but I see this is a mark of honour for them. Genuinely good to see an ostensibly family-friendly game that isn't afraid to be complex and challenging too. But everything about that third act is just straight-up horrific. Theory on the skeletons: The original settlers to the island were human, while the native (non-anthropomorphic) mammalian species were Grumpus-like. The main cast are the former, having eaten the latter and taken their appearance, and left their skeletons lying around - which not only explains their anthropomorphic nature but also tallies with what Floofty says about eating a Grumpus once.

The ending of this game gave me an actual anxiety attack. Like, I love horror and stuff, but my poor mind just wasn't prepared for the sudden change in pace, even if the entire game itself was disturbing.

I find it quite concerning how Floofly ended up after they got off the island and the bugsnax wore off... they had a peg leg...which means that the snax dont fix your body they somehow create parts that you don't have anymore. Makes me wonder what would have happened when the bugsnax wore off after they cut off their head and survived using bugsnax Dx

This game is horror but without any of the "instant scary" but once you think about it dawns on you the true nature of bugsnax

The disturbing truth is the bugsnax guy who has an idea on how to make bugsnax reproduce

The narrator kinda sounds like Elizabert Megafig.

When I first saw the snaxquatch I was sort of scared. It slithering down into the depths with it staring at the player as the player entered the under snax was pretty damn creepy.

I'm more of a AAA serious tone, 3rd person action adventure or FPS gamer. I rarely play indies or smaller lighthearted titles but this Console gen I wanted to branch out and play unique games like I used to when I was a kid playing PS1. So I played and platinumed both BugSnax and Astrobot and I enjoyed every minute of it!

The fact that Liz Burt was able to control the bugsnax makes me think that they're not inherently evil, but perhaps a weapon made by the Grumpenauti.

One of the trophies forces you to literally feed a bugsnax to someone who does not want to eat the bugsnax. It's the equivalent of force feeding a vegan, meat. This game is truly insidious. After the reveal at the end, it becomes uncomfortable to try unlocking the other trophies, which all involves feeding the grumpus's.

This seems like a game that Swankybox could get into.

Another modest masterpiece from Ash. I honestly thought you were just joking at the beginning but now I must play this game!

I wondered why the game never gives you a way to revert the characters. Then I saw the ending.

I thought this was a joke at first but bloody hell I just finished the game and it was so strange lol This makes a lot more sense now and you're certainly onto something

kinda bug and kinda snack, they're delicious little traps, Feed somebody and you'll see We are whatever we eat, find em lurking in the sand, creeping in the ketchup patch, come to Snaktooth Island and become, some bugsnax you see there's somewhere far off in the ocean, there lies an island where the monsters roam, a famed explorer tells me they're delicious and they're hitherto unknown, you might think it sounds so wonderful, Til you've seen a Mewon sprawl. Kinda bug and kinda snack, don't let them catch you in their trap, feed somebody and you'll see they turn into what we eat. find them lurking in the sand, crawling cross the ketchup patch, run from Snaktooth Island or you'll just be, more bugsnax. And if the tale isn't complete baloney, then it's the horror of the century, so grab a journal listen up, and make some weapons, an expedition 13 strong of grumpuses who all set off, seeking out a better life, on snaktooth island they would find a tasty quest, to fill the hole, that many feel inside their soul, wander deep, to reach the truth, and you might just learn something new you might think it sounds incredible, till you've heard a mothza's raging call. kinda bug and kinda snack, such delicious little traps, feed somebody and you'll see, they are whatever they eat, find em lurking in the sand, creeping up the ketchup patch, get off of this island or become some more bugsnax

It's official: The is the TRUE version of the Bugsnax theme song, not that sugarcoated version we hear in the game.

word from the devs, it used to be even more horrifying but then they toned it down the snaxs weren't even going to be cute

So this game is practically just about: ✨D R U G S✨

i couldnt bring myself to make any of the grumpuses, except floofty cus its a quest, have their entire bodies be made of bugsnax, i always felt off about it, this is an amazing game and i hope the developers have more like it in store

I had a run in with the Snaxsquatch on my playthrough and it really creeped me out. It was during the Cromdo quest where you have to fix the windmills. I fixed all three and while my camera was still pointed at the windmills, I set my controller down to look at my phone for a little bit. When I looked back at the screen I saw the Snaxsquatch quickly pop up and then disappear. This was pretty early in the game so I felt on edge and like something was watching me through my entire playthrough. I also saw the shadow during the Ghost Stories mission and that confirmed to me that what I saw was real, because I was starting to doubt myself.

Very well written and delivered Ash........I'm impressed!

First when I saw Bugsnax the game I thought it will be a like a cute game like silme rancher. And once I saw the end. My mind says no thanks I'll never buy this horror game of parasites

I know this game actually had disturbing undertones but I love ash's magical way of being able to make anything creepy
