South African subscriber here - I was at the 3rd place playoff game in Port Elizabeth between Uruguay and Germany where it was the first game Suarez returned after missing the semi-final due to that red card. The about 40 000 strong crowd booed at him for almost the whole game and every single time he touched the ball, atmosphere was absolute hostile. Ended up being a highly entertaining game.

23:31 What makes the incident worse is that the goalkeeper put a knife in his glove and that's where all the blood came from. Officials caught the goalkeeper pretending because on the cameras, the flair didn't hit the goalkeeper. Rather the goalkeeper used the knife to look injured.

I think a valid entry in such an iceberg could be the football war. In 1969, a match between El Salvardor and Honduras became the the start of a full blown war, leading to around 3000 casualties. To be clear though, the match was not the reason for the war, as tension between the countries were high, but it became the catalist for tensions to spill over.

El Maracanazo is even more crazy than what was said in the video. Rojas actually inflicted injury to himself by cutting his head with a razor blade hidden in his glove to make it look like the flare had hit him, rather than just feign an injury. The game also played a role in the crash of Varig Flight 254, the pilots failed to notice they’d entered an incorrect flight plan as they were too busy looking for radio stations broadcasting the game. By the time they realised it was too late, running out of fuel before they could reach safety and crash-landing in the jungle, killing 13 people but surviving themselves.

The Suarez situation is such a stupid one. First, the free kick which led to the handball shouldn't have been a free kick because it was offside. Second, it's not like he got away with it. Third and most importantly, who wouldn't have done what he did?

Even as a Liverpool fan I feel like I have to point out that the reason United kept taking off in Munich was because the FA board demanded that they be in England something like 3 days before their next league game. So they couldn’t stay overnight or else they forfeited the game. Could be wrong but I think that’s why

So, I can actually help with the Jabulani issue! Basically, the modern ball has a certain number of panels with a certain depth of the grooves around it. Goes back to the old Telstar ball or whatever. But because these grooves are where they are and are the depth they are, they wick the air around the ball a certain way, which makes the ball fly smoother through the air. Same physics principle as a golf ball with the dimples on it. The dimples on the golf ball wick the air around it as it spins, meaning it displaces the air a lot easier, resulting in a smoother, more predictable flight. The Jabulani, however, did not have these grooves. As a result, even when it was spinning, it was essentially just pushing the air out of the way, not "pulling" it behind itself, which made it extremely sensitive to even the tiniest changes in the air it was trying to go through. Hence, it flying all over the place. It operated like a knuckleball in baseball.

Kinda disappointed that the Indonesian football tragedy in 2022 not being deserved as a big mentions. It still hurts football fans across the world, as the death toll of that tragedy after the Arema-Persebaya derby easily overwhelms the death tolls of the likes of Heysel and Hillsborough. Same thing goes for the Egypt football tragedy in 2012 (Al Masry vs Al Ahly), which also destroyed the country's reputation a lot due to the events being related to the political revolution a year earlier.

You could almost make a separate iceberg about Johan Cruyff. Him being a great driving force behind increased player power, money in the game, and the rise of agents. His blackballing of PSV legends from the '74 squad. The awful performance at Euro '76. His "testimonial" against Bayern Munich that was lost 8-0, because the Germans wanted to take revenge for some past defeats and for the cold reception they got in the Netherlands. His forced return to the game after losing all his money in a business partnership with a scammer. His dispute with Ajax that led him to sign with arch-rivals Feyenoord and winning the league with him. Feyenoord fans tore up their season tickets. He wanted a left-winger to only help out in defence and closing gaps so Cruyff could shine. When Pierre Vermeulen failed to play the role of "bitch", Cruyff instigated his replacement by Stanley Brard, who was converted from left-back to left-winger, and booed all season for being a simple runner. But Cruyff got the last laugh as Feyenoord won the league. The post-Dream Team decline at Barcelona with the 4-0 against Milan. The rivalry with Van Gaal and his refusal to really acknowledge the latter's successes at Ajax in the 90s. The Dutch FA preventing Cruyff from becoming the national team's coach in 1990 and 1994, because Rinus Michels didn't want Cruyff to 'outshine the master'. Cruyff's successful lobbying to get Marco van Basten the same job in 2004, despite him having zero senior managerial experience, and then doing the same for Marco at Ajax in 2008. The falling-out with Van Basten, who decided not to apply Cruyffian principles at Ajax once he got to the club. The "velvet revolution" in the 2010s, that was very necessary, but also caused an increasingly dirty publicity war that ended up going to court to prevent the appointment of Louis van Gaal as general director. Some random ones that range from just interesting to pretty dark: - The Netherlands only qualified for '74 thanks to a goal by Belgium being wrongly disallowed for being offside. One of the most famous World Cup sides would not have happened without a refereeing mistake. - Political prisoners in Argentina could hear the victory celebrations in '78 while they were being tortured. - Euro '88: the qualification against Cyprus, where a Dutch "fan" threw a bomb at their goalie. Only thanks to intense pressure by the Dutch FA was a forfeiture prevented, that could have cost us the qualification, and we would never have gone on to win the tournament. - Marco Boogers was signed by Harry Redknapp off a VHS tape, but only contributed a horror tackle and eventually left the club. Due to a misunderstanding, it was reported that he was "living in a caravan". - West Ham signing Dani on loan, but then not playing him so as to drive down his transfer value. - Ronaldo almost signing with Ajax, until PSV made a bigger offer, and they flew him out to Schiphol just to rub it in. - Patrick Kluivert caused a traffic incident in which a man died when he was driving 90 km/h on a 50 km/h road. He got off with community service. 10 years later, in an interview, a journalist confronted Patrick with the fact that he had never tried to get in touch with the man's family. - Edgar Davids domestic violence allegations (never prosecuted due to lack of evidence).

I believe the issue with the Jabulani being too round is basically due to the fact that the spin was inconsistent, therefore making shots tend to knuckleball far more often. When a ball has more irregularities on it (e.g.: the panels of a football, the stitches of a baseball, the dimples of a golfball), the rotation of the ball tends to create differences in air pressure (see: Coriolis force). The part moving forward (in relation to the ball's flight) tends to impact the air and slow it down, while the part moving backward tends to help pull the air back around the ball. This causes high pressure in the former area and low air pressure in the latter. And in order to try and reach an state of equilibrium, the ball will try to move toward the area of low pressure. This is why if you hit a ball on the right side, as it spins through the air, the right side moves forward and increases the air pressure on that side while the left side moves backward and decreases the air pressure on that side. Therefore, the ball will attempt to move to the left as it flies. The closer a ball is to perfectly round, the less this force can affect the ball, and the more erratic the movement of a ball will be. The smaller variances in air pressure will have a much greater effect on the ball's movement. This is why the Jabulani was touted as having so much movement... because it did. It's just that the movement wasn't consistent and predictable.

I think you left out one of the most disturbing events in football history... The assassination of Andres Escobar after he scored an own goal for his national team of Colombia in the USA World Cup of 94... But as always GREAT VIDEO! Keep the hard and excellent work.

Rangers were the second team to play in the San siro with no fans after the incident with AC Milan it was our only defeat in the Champions League that year but we only won one game against Porto and drew 4, qualified with 7 points only to draw 2-2 then 1-1 and lose on away goals to a very very good Villarreal side. I think they had only conceded one goal in the group stages and almost made the final that year.

Fun fact Vizeh: El Maracanãzo ended up actually playing a part in the infamous crash of Varig 254, as the pilots of the 737-200 were hoping to get to their destination as quick as they could to watch the game, but a navigational error lead them to get lost, run out of fuel and crash. The worst part was what actually happened in the game.

The victims of that violence was the police officer. It's quite embarrassing. Also, later on that year, the Italian police did a big mistake that resulted in the death of the Lazio fan (I think), and that death sparked numerous football violences across Italy.

The Italy 1934 World Cup one. Might be fixed, might not be, but also a little unknown fact about that Italy squad. Mussolini went to te locker room, I wanna say this was before the final was played, and told the team “win this game, or I’ll have you all killed”
