The Disturbing Case of Shawn Grate

Ойын-сауық

Shawn Grate was a serial killer active in Ohio for over a decade. He was, disturbingly, only caught, when a woman who he had kept captive managed to make a terrifying 911 call. But that was only the beginning.

Imagine being the guy Shawn “demonstrated” how he killed previously. Literally in the arms/hands of a killer, being held by the same man, the same way that multiple women were in their last moments. So creepy.

I've been a 911 dispatcher for almost 10 years and I was just holding my breath the whole time hearing this. Also, I'm fucking furious with the dispatcher because she put that girl in GREAT danger by asking her 1,000 dumb ass questions. Keep her on the line and tell her to be quiet. That's all you do after the address and what's going on.

And look, EVERY person thinks we ask too many questions and that all questions are dumb and a waste of time. So not true, but it can feel like that when you’re awaiting help. Also, it’s policy everywhere I’ve worked to ask the address, confirm it, find out what’s going on, and dispatch ASAP. Then ask more questions. Sometimes the call taker is the dispatcher but sometimes it’s a separate person. However, we are always told to tell people (when it’s true, which should be always) that help is ALREADY on the way and our questions aren’t slowing it down.

I’m no expert but after listening to so many 911 calls I’d say it’s to keep the victim on the phone and trying to get more information from them that they perhaps would have missed with another question. It keeps them on the phone while the radar is able to track the location.

I thought the same to start with... but then it occurred to me that Jane Doe had probably turned the volume right down on the phone's speaker anyway so Grate wouldn't hear the dial tone or the person answering the call. And I'm sure Jane would have shushed the operator if she was too loud. Also, it was important for the 911 operator to communicate clearly the first time since lowering their voice might mean Jane couldn't understand what they said & she'd have to speak unnecessarily.

The most interesting thing about Sean Grates interrogations is that he was initially interrogated by a male detective who could not get Sean to open up about anything. They then switched to a female detective and Sean opened up completely and poured his heart out, which is strange considering he literally thinks women are worth scorn. Maybe he didn't see her as a threat or maybe he's so ashamed he couldn't say what he had done to another man. Very creepy and very dark.

Here in Ohio, the abuser is always given the benefit of the doubt and the victim is treated as if she's lying about the abuse. Not long ago a woman asked for a protection order from her abusive husband. Even though there were police records of abuse in the past she was denied. Two days later she was dead because her husband killed her. The judge who denied the protection order was told to step down or be terminated. Victims are at a great disadvantage when they're labeled as nothing more than hysterical females. And of course, the abuser always denies the abuse. Innocent until proven guilty and even after guilt is proved, sometimes they're still declared innocent or the judge decides the abuse was justified so he hands down a light sentence. We need more female judges on the bench and less old farts who still believe women should be kept in their place.

Like "Can you open the door of the bedroom?" After Jane Doe already explained the situation very clearly. Door was barricaded and she was scared to wake him.. because it would be loud. Why ask her same question? And also the police got to the house but it seemed like they werent sure which house it was so they get to the door and then werent sure so they left and went to the house next door. Like damn! She already explained it was the yellow house on the left!!! Kick the door and get her out!

@@jenniferallen4420 Man, the call is overly frustrating. I can understand that maybe this kind of story (abductee escapes her bindings to call police on abductor's cell phone and can't get out due to door making noise) can seem far fetched, but the original full-length call made me want to shake the operator a few times listening to it. This type of situation is super rare but that doesn't mean you don't take the call seriously and watch out for the caller's safety. Better to show up and have it be a hoax or a mentally unstable person than to be late and find a dead woman.

The will to live and survive: the most powerful experience human can endeavour and one which summons immense primordial beings which have watched over human as we traverse the passage of time. Not all get so lucky though, because equally, there are just as many dark entities waiting and salivating for the wickedness of human to be expressed. So fight for your life right where you are. I'd rather die in the streets fighting for my life than to live for hours, days, weeks or months of torture only to still die. We have the sickest female murderer in history that stabbed & skinned her partner, boiled his head in a vegetable stew, cooked steaks from his rump, ate one of the steaks & served the other steaks with well prepared veggies for his children after propping his skinned, headless corpse up on the lounge cross legged with a coke bottle in his hand. Prison wardens say shes the most quiet, respectable and well behaved prisoner ever to stay.

It irritates me when 911 operators use a booming voice to talk to a caller who is whispering, and who is in danger with a perpetrator literally in bed with them. This young lady was lucky - that serial killer could've been awakened by that operator's voice easily, and then the young lady would be no more. I agree. I'm unsure why people are upset with her. Also, most of the comments demonstrate a severe lack of understanding of how a cell phone works or listening skills. Jane Doe said he was in the bedroom and she was in a different room. She was whispering. The dispatcher's voice wasn't on speaker. Maybe people would rather hear her panicking and yelling loudly for help or talking with her "feelings" instead of focusing on the pertinent information to help locate her.

My mama worked 911 dispatch for 15+ years. In this video the reason it sounds like the operator is speaking so loudly is because the recording is from the headset she is wearing. She isn't actually yelling into the phone, she's just speaking but the microphone is directly next to her mouth. They ask those questions as standard protocol.
