George Digweed, a multiple World Champion Sporting Clays shooter, zero’d Station 2 at the 2024 World Sporting Clays Championship. In the 1pm Round of the first day of the Main Event, on course 694. A course strategically and beautifully designed and set by Master Target Setter Joe Scull. At 2:58pm George’s beautiful wife, Kate, posted his scorecard on Facebook with the comment “Tough layout. 54 for George today. Hard targets but it is a world championship…” When asked “when did George last blank a stand?” Kate responded “we have been together 34 years and I have NEVER seen him blank a whole stand.” Over 100 people liked the posts and many commented.
Joe Scull felt the targets on Station 2 were no more difficult than any other his other stations, and would never have thought George would miss them all. BUT… that didn’t matter. Perception is reality. And we instantly have proof of the mental game in action!
Within minutes the word was out that Digweed blanked Station 2 on 694. The image of his scorecard, the fact that it was is first zero’d station in at least 34 years, and the known to be challenging targets set by a Master Target setter on his best game for the Worlds… ran like flames fueled by gasoline through the 1600 registered shooters. Dread, doubt, insecurities, lack of confidence, over thinking, fear, worry, second guessing all ran wild in the minds of the shooters who had yet to still shoot Station 2 on 694. The result is what you can image… many followed suit in blanking the station, extra time in the stand by the shooters, and over caution measuring. By the looks of the 4 squad pile up, shooters would have thought there was a broken machine or issue holding up the flow. But NOOOOoooo… the traffic jam was caused by the fear and doubt planted like a live oak in these shooters’ minds. An experience forever to be known as the Digweed Effect.
