Our little girl Charlie is a Czech German Shepherd and she is just the most wonderful dog I have ever had in my life. We keep her busy and she keeps us busy. I love how sweet she is, we have a cat that is a brat that bites and claws her and Charlie NEVER retaliates. She is so patient. And what's crazy about it is she is only 5 MONTHS OLD. Working GSD are the best dogs to ever own. They are so smart and wonderful family dogs.

My son got a working line GSD pup at 9 weeks. She is absolutely the smartest dog I have ever worked with. He took her on the road at 4 and half months and that's when the trouble started. She was sick when he took her out but we didn't know it because his vet cleared her for travel. We changed vets after this and he brought the dog home because when she started feeling better she started biting him while he was driving. He is an over the road trucker and got this pup for companionship and protection. When she got home, I enrolled her in obedience classes and we got dismissed after the first class. It turns out my 50lb 5 month old pup was too "formidable" for my classmates. I enrolled her in puppy boot camp with a trainer that trains Czech working line German Shepherds. He had her listening and responding in less than 10 minutes without a word. We love this dog and want the best for her. My son and I co-own the pup for the time being. He wonders if the working line was the best choice for him. She is 1/2 DDR, 1/4 Czech and 1/4 Western working line. She is intense during training but also very playful and affectionate. Any opinion as to whether this dog will be a good road companion for him? She does guard me in public. That's part of why she is in boot camp.

I was lied to by the breeder. I have had G Sheps my whole adult life. Never had a problem! Luz is a solid black AKC G.S. She is now 8. Still jumps or climbs over 6 ft fences, listens SOMETIMES, is a bully to many other dogs, gets too excited to be allowed alone with my little dog, loves me dearly, and has driven me almost crazy! Many times I have almost given up, but there's no one I would trust to take her. I think she should have been a cop dog. I love her, but I'm 74 now and Luz will definitely be my last G. Shep. Be careful who you buy from. Backyard breeders are never a good idea! They are wonderful dogs, but they are not all the same!

Amen, so glad that someone else notices this. It breaks my heart seeing them walk out of the ring - hind legs look crippled at the walk- look SUPER weak. My Tanya was a working dog. When I went to the breeder, I knew it was her because she ran towards me. I did triathlon and she gets all giddy up when I start rolling my bike or tie my shoes. She runs with me. When I ride my bike for easy rides, she runs beside me. I slow down my speed so she can keep up. She died at 15. A day after I came home from an adventure race. I won the race but took home an injury. She wanted that night to run with me as I ride my bike. But I couldn't. I never thought that would be her last. My grandmother told me that she may have traded her soul to the dog gods to save me because during that race, I fell into a ravine with only a badly sprained ankle and still miraculously crossed the finish line. I haven't moved on from her death. It's been 12 years and I haven't adopted a dog ever since. 15-year-old Tanya will never be forgotten. That being said, thank you for your videos. It helps me recover and maybe soon I'll get another GSD. I still do long distance running no and less of tri so the dog will always be tired I guess.

@@aluradeathwing4667 I know. I show dogs myself. But in the US, try standing in front of the GSD ring, where every one of those breeders are considered to be “good breeders”. Your average pet buyer does not know this. Looking at how crippled they look, I can’t see how they meet the OFA bar. Or perhaps they get crippled later from the deformity. There’s a reason that police departments and Shutzhund people buy from Europe if they want a functional dog that doesn’t break down. It’s really the judges fault because they put the crippled dogs up. Admittedly, they do look impressive when floating around the ring. I could be wrong, it’s not my breed, but I’ve talked to a lot of Shutzhund people and used to work with the police departments and their GSD’s and Malinois are all imported. The difference is quite marked. I’m just curious, do you have this breed or compete with them? I’m just asking because I’m sure there are some good breeders in the US, they just aren’t awarded in the ring from what I see. If we do have breeders like that here, I don’t think many people are aware. I even see pet owners that have bad rears, although not as pronounced as the ones in the ring these days.

I got a working line German Shepherd 3 years ago. I had wanted to have at least one litter of pups from her, but she is going to get spayed this year. I wasn't going to leave her whole forever. I just couldn't find a male with good working lines that I felt would be a good match. Not many have the personality or conformation. My husband has a show line German Shepherd. Her lack was that her hips were too high and she didn't "sit" back on her heels enough. She is a good Service Dog for my husband. My girl will finish her Service Dog training after she is spayed. Also, not many wanted to prove their dogs were not negative for hip displasia. I love my girl, she follows me and makes sure I don't over do things. She is figuring out that I have seizures and she needs to keep me calm and gets my attention to help me relax and destress.

I guess it is your opinion in the end but I definitely prefer show lines. I personally have a rather handsome West German show line GSD named Max that participates in many activities such as tracking, obedience and endurance. Working lines are definitely more work driven and closer to the original GSD but they tend to be more aloof than their show line counterparts. They also are usually not suitable for the average family due to their needs of vast mental stimulation and a strong experienced pack leader. Show lines tend to make great, fun and loyal family pets. Many believe that show lines come packed with a whole range of health issues due to their sloped backs but German shepherds in a whole breed aren't exactly the healthiest so you might still need pet insurance if you get yourself a working line. When I was getting my GSD I talked to many owners and they all pointed me into the direction of the show line. Believe it or not I spoke to a West German working line owner and he recommended a show line. Many also believe that show lines lose the tenacity and the guarding ability of the working line but they have proven that show lines can still do protection dog work and guarding to an acceptable standard. I really hate all the cuss about the show line. They don't deserve it.

I have a WL and SL GSD. The hate we get for having SL dogs is because of poor breeding thanks to back yard breeders. No real show line dog will have hip issues. That’s why it’s best to find a good breeder who make sure all their dogs are OFA cleared. Sadly people only focus on the poorly unheathtested GSDs that back yard breeders have bred.

Hi All, my german shep puppy is about 1.5 years old and she is a straight back (doesn't have any kind of slope) But I notice she has a slight arch sometimes near the middle of her back. Not crazy noticable. Our vet didn't say anything about it when she went in for a check up recently. But I notice it. Anyone know fi this is something I should be watching out for? should I be proactively doing stuff like giving her certain supplements? foods? Should I be concerned? If you choose to respond, please no guesses. If you don't know or not sure, this is not a question for you. Thank you all in advance.

I’m here because I show Schnauzer’s. All I know is that while the show dogs are beautiful and they float around the ring. Where I get upset is watching them come out of the ring walking, almost all of them look crippled. Most AKC judges do the right thing, but in GSD’s they reward the dogs that are so extreme that it encourages that breeding. I’d rather have a sound dog.

It's the American show lines that have that horrible dramatic hip angle and sloping backs, the east German showlines are very similar to the working lines as they need to be able to do the work that a working line would do, they are just bred to have less of a working drive and present themselves more elegantly, they do have a slight angle to the hip but it is not as dramatic and pronounced as the American show line. They also a bit bigger than your typical working line

All German Shepherd dogs are working to some degree, they all need a job. Mine guard this 1/2 acre from anything including butterflies. Squirrels are a prize chase for them however they seldom catch one. I did have a GSD that was the fastest dog I had ever seen, if a squirrel was spotted mid-yard he did not stand a chance but fortunately I could call him out and he would break off the chase. At full gate he looked like a cheetah at full speed. His speed was jaw dropping and out of the 20 or so GSD's I have had since 1970 he was the only one like this...

I feel some judgement from other breeders regarding her possible breeding in the future apparently they think she is too plain, since I’m not trying to raise show dogs I’m trying to raise amazing ranch dogs I care most about health and temperament as opposed to blue eyes and a fancy coat I guess my question is since I’m not showing her should I still consider breeding her, based on health and amazing temperament alone shes a fantastic choice but she may never produce a show pup. I’m considering a second female from a more showy line so I can produce some of each from my kennel maybe have “show” litters and “ranch” litters, is that common in the working dog world? @@germanshepherdmanofficialc7598 All of the people that I show dogs with raise the puppies in the house, and are socialized quite well. If that is not the case, run away from that breeder. Show dogs on the whole, are some of the happiest and well cared for dogs that I know (minus the weak rear that seems to be in the show lines). Most are thrilled to be at the dog show and the show dogs actually get upset if they are retired and left at home when you show a younger dog. I always take the retired dog to the show and make sure to put his show lead on when we walk around the show grounds. It’s a win/win because the dog is happy just walking the grounds and seeing the other show dogs.

I am in germany and I have looked for what you call west German and there isn’t anything in regards to German shepherds as a breed with shows and what not that is east and west. It’s just Deutsch Schäferhund even then the word Deutsch is not even commonly used only when specified as an old German shepherd *Alt Deutsche Schäferhund* that had different characteristics. I am just wondering if there is such a thing as east and west German shepherds and it is just that the Germans don’t want to say so because of the history or is it just a mistake on your behalf? And if there is and I suspect that differently during that time shepherds on both sides have developed and evolved differently specially with the influence of other breeds from both sides east and west, can one tell the difference between both now ?

Hello sir, you are right. I have talked to several breeders around my area and also in the west side of germany, and it seems that west german are considered to be the true GSD and the east german breeders say that theirs are just what is close enough to what DDR GSDs were because during that period a lot had died and not a lot of people or breeders actually could afford raising dogs due to famine and hunger. so basically yes there was and there is some what a difference nowadays however it most likely not be as pronounced as it was back then.

Im sorry but I wish you would’ve talked about the health issues with show lines I find it very frustrating that no big German Shepherd owners with a good following express the problems with the show lines why not improve the hip problems why make it a “standard” to have bad hips why not make straight backs the good standard ..again wish you would’ve touched more on that with the show lines like you said “they have to be perfect” but can you explain why the AKC recognizes deformations In the dog as perfect ? 🤔

German Shepherd Man Official Channel I understand but at the same time I feel you can’t mention the pros of the show lines without mentioning the cons as well... I find that’s the problem is simply people with GSD show lines either don’t know or don’t wanna know .. but the Health and comfortably of the animal should be most important and not Compromising the breeds longevity to be a good working/family owned companion I’ve seen to many “Championship “ show lines be glorified for all the wrong reason I just wish somebody would say something about this because we should be improving the breeds bone structure not destroying it . I respect you and what you do GSM but just had to vent a little on the topic from one GSD owner to another .

I wish I knew what line my Jenny was. Her back didn't slope, and she had selective energy. She could be chill if we were chill, or a ba of energy if we were out and about. She was all black, so the summer was her biggest enemy. Her parents were huge, but she had a gimp leg from the time she was a puppy, and as soon as it was amputated, she took off, even when she was drugged up and supposed to be sleeping off the surgery. She was 75lb even with only 3 legs, but she was long and lean, not bulky looking at all. I saw was, but she's still alive, but my ex stole her in the divorce and I was left with our older dog she didn't like, Tammy (still a a awesome dog), which broke my heart because I didn't want to separate them. Anyways, sorry for the personal stuff. If that build rings a bell, I'd be glad to know.
