The Difference between Riddim and Dubstep (with examples)

Музыка

Do you know the difference between riddim and dubstep? What is the difference between riddim and dubstep? Is riddim it's own genre or is riddim a subgenre?
TIME STAMPS BELOW
Today we explore the history and origins of my favorite EDM genres Dubstep and Drum and Bass AKA D&B. Another genre with an identity crisis. D&B is both a genre and a subgenre.
Click to see my thoughts along with industry experts on these controversial topics.
#riddim #dubstep #riddimdubstep
EDM just continues to evolve constantly. Today we are talking about riddim and dubstep. What's the difference? Is riddim a sub-genre or its own genre? And is Skrillex ruining dubstep? Today we're talking about riddim and dubstep. I did an Instagram poll a couple weeks ago asking what the difference is what people's favorite riddim or dubstep artists are and what they thought about Skrillex. I didn't get a ton of response. Most of the responses I got were, "I don't know. Is there a difference? What is the difference? Which one's a subgenre?"
So today will be really interesting. I fully expect some conversation about this because I'm just one person doing a little bit of research and giving my opinions. I've kind of like just laid out what every genre is and gone through a little bit of a timeline and I'm gonna kind of go through. It's all out of order, but I'm gonna do my best to kind of pull something together. EDM music continues to evolve constantly and it will continue to evolve. One of the biggest things that is kind of a misconception is that EDM is this new type of music, but really there's a long history and I want to dig in a little bit, but mostly focus, like I said, on riddim, dubstep drum and bass. I would like to start with in the early 1990s in London was a genre called UK Garage. UK Garage bleeds garage house R&B, Jungle and Dance Pop.
In 1990 in the UK we also have Drum and Bass. I know that there's a little bit of debate about this, but drum and bass; its own genre. Well known for fast break beats with heavy bass and the bass lines. This grew out of breakbeat hardcore. Hardstyle, not to be confused with hardcore music, was from the late 1990s in the Netherlands. Hardstyle is Dutch EDM mixed with techno...
For those of you that aren't familiar with techno, I feel like I should just like push you along to "The Genres Explained" by Emma Kapotes • The Different Types of...
Hardstyle is Dutch EDM mixed with Techno, Hardcore and Trance. It's hard sounding kick drum plus offbeat bass equaling reverb bass.
We move right along to the late 1990s in Russia where there is Hard Bass. The sub genre of Russian inspiration from UK fast tempo, bouncy techno and hard house.
Dubstep originated in Southern London in the late 1990s. I think most people are very familiar with dubstep. Dubstep.. I feel like you either love or hate dubstep. It is known for its prominent sub bass frequencies. Skrillex kind of brought it to the United States and made it popular. Some people love that. Some people don't. And then I have a note on here that Hardcore is 150 beats per minute.
We'll be talking about the beats per minute for all of these different genres and subgenres. So BPM is beats per minute. Also, fun fact, a SiriusXM channel BPM.
BPM = Beats Per Minute. Cool.
I love riddim, but I didn't know that riddim is actually the Jamaican patios, which means
kind of jargon or slang, for a pronunciation of the English term "rhythm." So riddim equals rhythm. Makes sense, right? I'm just going to go ahead and take a minute to talk about
the different artists and some sampled songs.
I hope you learned a little bit more about riddim, dubstep and the different genres and subgenres that live around that era.

Great video, though I really wish you had started with UK dubstep tracks that birthed from two-step and garage, that started the whole genre, and then played some of the "bro-step" that you did, to show how much the genre has evolved, and how someone like Horsepower Productions who started the genre sounds nothing like Skrillex or similar, aside from the same BPM, and use of sub-bass and kick-snare. UK dubstep was/is a lot more minimal, and more about leaving space in the track, so to speak. That said, I love both and try to see as many of both sounds in concert as I can. And quick note: That Badklaat track is called Head Crush.

I would love to hear your opinion/views on "riddim dubstep" from my knowledge that has come from the roots of uk dub but also mixed with the heavy basslines but with a more bouncy rhythm feel hence the name riddim and not such a crashing and smashing of sounds all together in you're face lol.

nice vid! i think its important to note that dubstep started out as something completely different from what most people think of today. People like mala and coki come to mind as og dubstep; it started as a reflection of dreary city nights of london. The post-skrillex americanized excision type stuff is almost all tearout dubstep, which is now synonymous with dubstep in most circles. I love excision but i think its important to honor roots.

Starts talking about Riddim at 8:36 and then gives multiple examples. Begins direct comparison of the two at 10:12 Summarized, Riddim is a more minimalist, less dense subgenre of dubstep. The movement of the bass in Riddim is slower and more mechanically rhythmic than most dubstep. One could say that the rhythm is more rigid and enforced with a half-time, marching drum pattern that complements the slower oscillating "wubs." Compare dubstep where drum patterns are more syncopated (not on strict beats of the song) and the bass moves faster resulting in characteristic growls instead of Riddim's bass which sounds closer to a glide or bark.

I appreciate the effort, but how do you say Skrillex popularized dubstep in the US without: A) explaining or sampling pre-Skrillex dubstep from the UK (e.g. Skream, Mala), or B) playing any Skrillex? Using a bunch of Datsik (ew!), Zomboy, and Borgore from 2017-18 isn’t the best way to take the viewer from your history setup to “dubstep,” imho. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think I must have edited out the part where I link to the reddit convo and mention this video is already too long 🤣! I def do much more of a riddim history than dubstep so I will def keep that in mind with volume 2. The other issue is when I go to Skrillex shows I am too busy headbanging to capture footage. Hope you'll come check out the next video once it is finished. And you don't like Datsik?! His show was so much fun.

I think she did a good job. Riddim compared to dubstep sounds like aliens literally and people describe dubstep as Alien. To me dubstep sounds like pots and pans smashing together. Unappealing. Riddim is superior. It is the definition of true dubstep in my opinion.

NIceeee! But i know you knew you had it comming when opening the topic on genres.... Alright so, DnB is not a debated genre it is one. It started out as a develoupment of DUBsound culture and drum breakbeats. After it got branded as a seprate music genre , it slowly created Dubstep, when artists and producers started to experiment with the same formula of Heavy sub bass and breakbeat style drums, but slower. xD DnB has many mnay legit sub genres. But again when talking about music genres it's hard to pinpoint what and where, and when, the shift started to happen so a seprate genre get's recognised, so always take it with a grain of salt. Great video, enjoyed watching it! Keep on raving! ** Edit yes I said genre =D

I think I can differentiate the two from sound and complexity. Dubstep is more complex, with random and hard synths and basses, plus aggressive drums. Riddim is more like, wub basses with rhythm, and simple drum patterns.

I hope it does get labeled as it’s own genre, because it sucks having it associated with dubstep and makes the real talented genre look and sound terrible. Bring back sexy dubstep! The evolution EDM took by being loud and "scratchy" with lack of "character" after the strong influence of Riddim ruined electronic music for me. Where are the individualistic songs that paint the personality of the producer? I used to be able to listen to a new song i'd never heard before and guess the artist based on the theme, structure, melodic fragments, sound design, etc.... This is when everyone said "dubstep sounds like nails in a blender". Now? Well.... now it really does sound like nails in a blender. Not to mention anti-drops have been completely ruined and their effectiveness has worn out because they're supposed to be unexpected. Because they're normalized, it just sounds tacky and out of place. Too many people trying to do the same thing makes that thing get old fast. On another note, looks like we have another TN concert go-er! My first was Excision's 2015 Paradox tour in Nashville - went to celebrate my and my friend's 18th bday... but it makes me sad because I've been disappointed that I missed the golden era of EDM for concert-going

Riddim isnt a real thing. Riddim is what idiots who got into dubstep way too late are calling original dubstep. The music people know as 'dubstep' now didnt come out till YEARS after the original dubstep came out(what clowns are calling riddim). When it did, it was labeled as Brostep, a subgenre of dubstep, by the actual fans of dubstep at the time. Then some idiots on too much ketamine just co-oped the name dubstep, instead of coming up with their own subgenre name, it all blended together, and now fast forward 20 years you got people creating their own bullshit genre name for what is the real and true DUBSTEP sound. Whats hilarious is I literally just watched an interview with Boogie T where he admitted he doesnt even know wtf Riddim really is 😂. - a dubstep fan since the mid 2000s

Ok wait - you mention drum n bass starts in the 90s but then use a sub focus track from the 2000's as an example? Then you say dubstep originated in the late 90s in the UK, but the track you play as an example is Borgore - Decisions, which released in 2012. Thats two different decades / genres / tracks you get wrong and also songs like this Borgore track were widely considered BROstep when released and relative latecomers to the "dubstep" scene. Im no expert, but there was a fairly heated debate that BROstep was not "real dubstep", because "real dubstep" was shit like Burial. The complaint was that fans of artists like Skrillex co-opted the name of the genre "dubstep" for whatever reason and these artists became super popular while not producing anything that resembled "original" or "real dubstep". Of course its ok to make mistakes and such and I'm no expert on sub genres myself, but these mistakes seem fairly obvious and egregious to anyone who knows anything about the history or was involved in the scene... Not to mention - these are just the mistakes that I as a non-expert was able to catch so - it makes me wonder if theres a bevy of other problems in your video or line of thinking that I'm missing as well.. I've been out of the scene for a bit now and came here to try to figure out wtf "Riddim" is and from your examples - if theyre correct - it just sounds closer to what "original" or "real" dubstep is / was.. but who knows

In my opinion, it seems like we have taken old school type dubstep (actual dubstep) and given it the name Riddim. And brostep has replaced what we used to consider dubstep. Or maybe I’ve actually liked riddim all along and just grew up calling dubstep.

Nothing about it is in that tempo range unless you're listening to Drumstep, if you have to describe every element in a song as being in half time maybe, just maybe, the song is actually at half the BPM you're pretending it is, Dubstep is 70-75 BPM, no one will convince me otherwise

They claim its that because of what it used to be mixed with back in the day. Before dubstep and grime split, they'd be played together in sets and spat over same way. And grime was definitely 140. Also because of how DAWs work, most preferred work in 140 rather than 70.
