The Difference Between Pigeons and Doves

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

    In swedish and other Nordic languages there is only the word 'dove', making it more and less confusing at the same time. When speaking English though, I tend to pick whatever works best depending on who I'm talking to. If I'm contacting landlords about keeping a pigeon, I'll call it a dove because people have more positive associations with the word, but when talking to friends and family, I'll call her a pigeon.

    I typically use the words in much the same way, swapping back and forth depending on the situation and context. Though growing up the encyclopedias and birding books I had said rock dove not rock pigeon so I tend to lean towards that term out of the two unconsciously.

    In french we call pigeon for pigeon, tourterelle for wild dove (like Spotted dove) and colombe for white domestic dove or pigeon. I have a Spotted dove as pet (I saved it after an hurican). It’s wonderfull pet.

    I always thought of doves as mini pigeons! Doves tail feathers are shaped into a point while pigeons' are round, and pigeons have the ceres on top of their beaks! Both cute! Kinda like Comparing ducks and geese, same family but one is bigger!

    I've been looking into getting a pigeon or two recently, and your videos have been extremely helpful! It seems fairly hard to find information on keeping pigeons as pets, especially indoors, and I'm so glad I found your channel ^^

    @@animalpeople880 btw! I noticed (or maybe I can't see) that Talulah isn't wearing her flypers. My pigeons don't have one, but I'm not sure whether to get them comfortable with me first or just put them on when I let them explore outside their cage. Currently, I just put papers where they usually make a mess.

  • @animalpeople880

    @@joyouspoke yeah she’s not in a flyper in this one. She actually only wears them a few times a week on average. If she wants to hang out on something hard to clean, if I’m filming in a room with carpet, or if we’re going to town. I don’t mind spot cleaning and just keep a roll of toilet paper and a spray bottle on hand. I recommend developing trust first, otherwise it will be so much scarier to get used to them, and that could set you back. When they trust you already they are much more forgiving.

    I’ve never made a pillow, but I always make one thing or another when my birds moulted feathers. I’ve got a decent collection of Tallulah’s moulted feathers at this point, though I made a sculpture from them a while back so my collections reduced since then.

    @@animalpeople880 Do you get 'down' under feathers as well as big flight feathers in a moult, and how often does moulting happen for these different feather types? Does Tallulah grow a winter coat, and what about my beloved feral pigeons, do they have winter coats?

  • @animalpeople880

    @animalpeople880

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@pdsnpsnldlqnop3330 they do have down, but not a lot. They moult all there feathers about two times a year, same with the ferals which are the same species as Tallulah, just a different breed. You find all the moulted feathers, but people usually collect the big ones since it’s hard to keep track of the small ones and the down so it usually just gets vacuumed up. They don’t get a winter coat they way some mammals do, there feathers normal are warm enough to do they job.
