Let's talk about the difference between oversteer and understeer. Driver coaches Kai Goddard and Andy Lee explain both scenarios and offer some great advice on how to handle each situation.
Understeer is just the worst feeling in the world. It's the more common of the two slides and most production cars or street legal cars are designed to understeer a little bit. There's no grip. Their front end is not working. You're turning, turning, turning, and you're just going straight. You want to go over here, but you're going to end up over here. The arch itself widens, because you're going too fast, and you're turning too much or you're probably turning in too early. At that point you know your lap time is probably in the toilet, but what we want to do now is save the car.
For a pro driver, a big oversteer slide like this is a lot of fun. But if you're new to driving, this can be a very terrifying situation. How do we handle this? Well once you get into this scenario, there's a few steps you need to follow.
If you learned something, but you want more detail or you're interested in some private coaching lessons, follow the links through opentrack.com where you can get in touch with Kai and Andy.

wow, this is ultra professional quality . great editing , great cam work ,great graphic work , great sound, great presentation ,so clear
This is the best video on oversteer vs understeer. Rest of the videos are convoluted and confusing with unnecessary details
I am so grateful for the steering, brake and throttle overlay. Perfect.
This has already been commented, but the edit around 1:50 is absolutely amazing. I kept skipping back so I could watch it again.
The oversteer segment with the the slow mo car in the background was a really cool shot, well done. The normal speed play through right at the start of the segment makes it seem like they were part of the same shot, caught me off guard when it came back through in slow motion glory.
this video is so freaking high quality. the demonstrations, explanations, graphics, editing, all of it is quick and concise. compressing a video that could take 30 mins+ into just under 3 is amazing. love it
Thanks for posting these, made my day at the track much more productive.
The graphics were really helpful for me to understand what to do! I watched 3 other videos and was still confused until now. Thanks!
Thanks Ive been wanting to know this in Need For Speed Carbon when I was little .
Awesome video!! Keep up the great work!! Love game like ‘break wheel display’! Love it!!

Can't remember who said it, but I found one way to easily describe the difference in the two. "Oversteer is when the passenger gets scared. Understeer is when the driver gets scared."
I'm new driver, love you
Awesome thanks fellows. Would be interesting to know what changes necessary mechanically to adjust?
Im gonna go try this in my nissan cube cubed now 😊
I used to work for a ski hill, funnest think was throwing my back end around on those mountain roads coming off the mountain.
Now I need to see comedy sketch where someone has a heart attack in a restaurant. And when the waiter yells out if anybody can do CPR. Someone yells yes, and then runs outside to go power drifting in the parking lot.
Wow amazing video. I am not sure why this channel doesn't have like 1 million + subscribers. KZread algorithm or just not a lot of car guys on youtube?
Wow! Fast and easy
That editing was gorgeous
Dude I was in my E46 seen a guy on a motorcycle doing burnouts, I'm turning left into a very narrow street where he is but in the opposite lane, so I decided I'm going to join in on all the fun I go to drift the corner from a complete stop manage to drift the corner go in between the motorcycle to my left and a parked car to my right mean while my dad is looking at me scared shitless cause he thought I was going to crash I straightened out and left happy... Now yesterday I did the same thing but oversteered and almost went flying into a parked car on the curb to the right, I took my foot off the gas which I know now is stupid, cause then my whole car swung to the right into the oncoming lane of traffic almost hitting another BMW driving then finally corrected myself... I felt so good damn stupid and now I think back of how lucky I was I didn't lose control n hit that motorcycle the last time I pulled that crap... I can only say at least I didn't hurt anyone or hit any vehicles, and I learned my lesson and won't pull these stupid stunts on the streets till I'm at least way more experienced... I don't really like spinning my tires and drifting all the time but I do get that urge when I'm in a big empty lot to do sum sick ass pulls n burnouts I love cars and I love the sound of the engine, the tires smokin, and just the driving physics alone but after that happened I felt like I didn't even deserve my car, my car is at least 22 years old and still beautiful as hell and I would of smashed my front end cause my stupidity I definitely learned how easy it is to lose control
Good
1:48 epic edit ever
Nice
this doesnt go for track driving but more for street driving, but if you're ever understeering one thing you can do is pull ur handbreak a little (at lower speeds) to provide some oversteer to correct your car's nose and point you where you want to go.
@booyakashaWagwan
Ай бұрын
No, don't do this, you're going to upset the car. The instructors are correct. Put a little pressure on the brake pedal to transfer the weight to the front wheels. What you are mentioning might work in slow corners on loose, low grip surface, but not on asphalt.
Informative. Thank you.
1:51 cool effect
I love oversteering in skyline blvd on portland oregon. Took a couple cars to wreck to learn this properly tho lmao
Great video! I had the two terms completely mixed up in my head (thought oversteer was understeer) for years. My AWD car (Audi A6) understeers a bit at higher speeds and I'm guessing it's a safety reason (easier to control).
@mehmetcamc9888
3 жыл бұрын
İt can be safety for you because your car is awd.İn fwd it is very horrible.Especially if you are on the narrow way.
So Circa produced the video? Like the effects/editing?
Just did a wicked over steer with my stinger but i didnt have a chance to flick the steering wheel in the direction of the slide. It happens so fast i want to learn this but dont want to pay for the tires😂
1:28 I like how they use the mustang for the FAIL! lol
Great video and extremely informative. Several months ago I was in a situation driving my z. Throttling up slightly in a slide kept me out of the woods. Was I going too fast?.....yes I was but what a rush. If I do it again I would prefer it be on a track with no trees around.

Exactly how I crashed my Z (by failing to do what you did). Now I don't risk it on the street

What about snap over steer?
Can you do one about correcting understeer in a FWD. or is it really any different?
@andyleeracing
4 жыл бұрын
There are some differences but the physics are basically the same. We’d love to do another video focusing on FWD and AWD. Stay tuned.
A stock car would flipped and crash if you try oversteering. We need a video on how to tune a ride suitable for oversteering.
Understeer is likely more common because most street legal cars are FWD. Sliding out on a roundabout in the wet thanks to understeer can be a little scary the first couple of times, but it's fun once you know how to correct it. I'd recommend NOT applying the brakes during understeer because you've got no traction anyway and they won't do much. Just take your foot off the throttle and let the engine do the braking if you're at a low enough speed. I have actually almost span out when understeering too because for whatever reason, my front end decided to keep going and my rear tyres still had traction. I've even accidentally oversteered a Nissan Cabstar when leaving the yard at an old job and heading onto a main road. I didn't even realise that it was RWD at the time and the ground was slightly wet. Luckily for me it was only a small slide and needed hardly any correction.
The nice thing about oversteer is that you didn't see the tree that killed you
Where was this filmed
But none of them hit the Tree in background??
Hi love from India - Tamil nadu I owns lancer front driving car petrol Can I fix both front and lower strut bar same time And am planning to fix front and back lower arm bar
I just want to drive normally. Do rwd cars turn like a fwd ? I don’t want to drive in a track
Understeer because the ass end is pushing the front end . More nose, weight,possibly caster adjustment.
Is oversteer similar to drifting, it looks like it but idk a lot about cars😅
Does it apply to fwd
driving instructor: today we're gonna learn CPR... student: if someone crashes? driving instructor: no if you oversteer
How about fwd
Maybe someone explain why you don’t gently tap the brake on the RWD like the FWD under steer does?
Here From Internet Historian!
But is this the same with all wheel drive and front wheel drive?? 🤔
ok now how to correct the understeer in a manuel front wheel car
How can I work for you? I would love to apply for a job in your company. Would that be possible?
Under Steering is Safe 'Won't Kill U' Aftr Turning Accelerate. Not while Turning Turning In = Braking Mid Corner = Steering Turning Out = Accelerate Reduce Steering Lock = Increase Steering Response
B.
I can correct understeer easily but not oversteer
But, when the car is fwd or rwd, does it affect the process??
@alexgravelle164
2 жыл бұрын
With FWD you're more likely to understeer, and with RWD you're more likely to oversteer.
Can't you just brake when you understeer?
NFS MW, Here I Come!
I had a taste of under steer in my IS300 today. not a memorable experience what so ever
Getting kicked in the balls is funnier than Richard Hammond
I race on Forza motorsport 4 and I overseer On purpose to initiate a drift
in the movie "cars" i understood it better! LUL
Ain’t no cpr bullshit, das driftin.
Also perfect example as to not buy a Mustang. They have loaded up the internet with oversteer accidents.

Damn i saw that tree! Oversteer is indeed better.
.
Because your going too fast. Turning requires slowing down
Attention to ordinary drivers: You wil never have to worry about this if your tires are ok and most importantly , you stay under the speed limits.
@jasanpahaf

wet conditions amplify the effects of under/over steer. Specially icy roads. Many train for high speed driving using icy roads.
oversteer is a bitch... people often confuse the front wheels loosing traction as oversteer.. when they turn and go straight... in technically can be but in my mind it IS NOT
You can’t teach this stuff… what do you want to do with the car? Ok, do it. Crash, repeat.
