The Difference Between Grace & Mercy

There have been many times in my life when I have been confused regarding the meaning of Grace and Mercy. One could almost say they are synonymous with each other and in fact, some scriptures seem to use them that way, or at a minimum don't make it clear. Stop and ask yourself what is the difference between God's Grace, and God's Mercy. For many, like myself, this was difficult for me to answer for many years. Some might say it is by grace we are saved and others might say it is by mercy we are saved. It is the same thing? This video discusses the true difference between Mercy and Grace.

Almost a parallel to sins of commission and omission. Mercy is the power to forgive us of wrongs and sin. Grace is the power to make us better and strengthen us.

I've heard it like this -- God shows GRACE when He gives you something you have not earned. God shows MERCY when He doesn't give something you have earned. In other words, God provided GRACE to all mankind by creating this world and all therein for our use, providing the plan of happiness with all it's aspects, and providing a Savior who would open the door for MERCY to be shown (all these things we did nothing to earn). God provides MERCY when He doesn't immediately condemn us for every sin we commit, (i.e. Jesus showing MERCY to the adultress by saying, "niether do I condemn thee, go and sin no more.") thus allowing her to repent and thus giving all oif us the opportunity to repent. That comdemnation we did earn. I'm probably not doing it justice but I hope you get my drift. Thank you for your wonderful explanation.

Very good video. It drives me crazy. When born again, people debate about Grace and they just say how we always talk about works works works but clearly it's not. You have to run a mile under 5 minutes to be saved. But like you said trying to be like Jesus obeying all of God's commandments is the works.

There's a conceptual three legged stool for creation, fall and atonement. Another conceptual three legged stool for grace, mercy and justice.

God The Father = Judgement, God The Mother = Mercy. God is both just just and merciful.

I see it like this: Mercy is when we are not punished for something we deserve, while grace is when we are rewarded for something we don’t deserve. Mercy allows justification or the forgiveness of sin allowing us to return to neutral, while grace allows sanctification or the power to become like God. In a broad sense, justification through Mercy is an Aaronic Priesthood function, allowing us to become clean from the blood and sins of the world and is associated with the Sacrament, which is administered in meetinghouses. Sanctification through Grace is a Melchizedek Priesthood function, allowing us to receive the gifts He has available for us in the temple as the Endowment (which means ’gift’) and Sealing ordinances. Centuries ago when the idea that man could become like God was lost, the ideas of grace and mercy became confused and intertwined. Martin Luther was confused and most people still are.

Grace is a verb. An action. When grace is used it is talking about the actions of the Lord. Mercy is adjective. A description. Mercy describes Christ actions.
