We’re cruising along our tour of the best wines in the world, and continuing our Italian wine series, with an episode I’m particularly excited about. Today we’re looking into the crème de la crème, some of the best and most highly-regarded Italian wines, made in Piedmont, in the North of country, the two illustrious names that are Barolo, and Barbaresco. You’ve heard about these wines I’m sure, but do you know how they’re different, what are the subtle differences between them, and which one is for you, which one should you buy. We’ll find out.

Visit the upper Piedmont (gattinara, ghemme, boca, lessona, bramaterra) and the Valtellina, you will find the Nebbiolos of the future. If in the Langa they do not find a solution for the heat and drought in about ten years, the Nebbiolo di Barolo and Barbaresco will stop giving great wines. This is why Roberto Conterno, the father of Barolo Monfortino, bought the Nervi estate in Gattinara.

The first Barolo I ever had (I don’t remember the vineyard or the vintage) was way too young. I expected to be dazzled but was a little disappointed. It was super tannic and the fruit was kind of hidden. It did get better with aeration, but I later learned that it had not sufficiently aged. Whereas, the first Barbaresco I had was delightful and much more approachable. I’ve been enjoying some 2009 Barolos of late, and they’re just coming into their own. Sadly, I’m all out of Barbarescos.😉

excellent!!i often wonder what makes the gaja wines so superior to the other barolo and barbarescos! what do they do differently?

I like both. The difference between the two is about 11 miles as the crow flies. Marketing favors the wines of Barolo as far as pricing goes but the nebbiolo grapes used for both are indistinguishable for most people (in my humble opinion) and I've been there and drank many iterations of both DOC and DOCG classifications....

You say they use big slovenian oak barrels, its slavonian oak from croatia. The names are simmilar thats why its maybe confuesing. Thanks for great show

Nebbia or fog in reference to the lately ripening grape around these towns in Lange's region. That's a huge wine area not just those towns. Alba and Asti with Barbera and Dolcettos, Nebbiolo wines all around. Buy its very difficult to grow there too sounds like no lol. You wanna research good years, 10 years old is a must. It's a big money wine!!

Another excellent video. I think I would be best starting with the Barbaresco, I like fruity well rounded approachable wines. Separately, I tried a Cabernet sauvignon the other night, I think for the first time. Both hubby and I got a headache. Do you think this is because it was oaked? Or something else? Normally we drink an Australian Merlot with no issues.

Definitely NOT due to oak! ppl report headache often supposedly due to sulphites (natural or added preservatives in some wines). 90% chance tho your headache was actually caused by being dehydrated while or after drinking wine!

@@genestone4951 Hmm we never get headaches from wine though, so it was unusual for both of us to get one
