The difference between adults and grown ups: Dr. Lisa Damour at TEDxCLE

Dr. Lisa Damour directs the Center for Research on Girls at Laurel School, maintains a private psychotherapy practice, consults to schools nationally, is a clinical instructor at Case Western Reserve University, and serves on the board of the Eating Disorders Network.
Dr. Damour is the author of numerous academic papers, chapters, editorials, and books related to education and child development. She is co-author with Dr. James Hansell of Abnormal Psychology, a widely-used college textbook and co-author with Dr. Anne Curzan of First Day to Final Grade, a handbook introducing college instructors to the art and craft of teaching. She has worked for the Yale Child Study Center and held fellowships from the Pediatric AIDS Foundation, the Bush Center for Child Development and Social Policy, and the Sadye Harwick Power Foundation.
Dr. Damour received her B.A. from Yale University and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Michigan.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

My college students love this TED Talk. One of the things that struck me as hilarious is how Dr. Damour teases a little about how teenagers talk...amid the irony that she uses the word "so" forty-five times!! : )

Fantastic! I just listened to an interview with her and wanted to hear more from her, so I came here. I love how structured she is, how clear her priorities, how she seems to be really compassionate and caring for adolescents, when all I ever hear about them is complaints, and how clearly and concisely she gives really good advice, things that migth seem common sense but that nonetheless many of us loose sight of when our kids trigger that fight or flight response, we are stressed out or they just push our buttons and fear (for their future, their safety, our relationship with them, their respect for us) raises its ugly head

After listening to Dr. Lisa I just realized what a terrible parent I was hahahaha. Where were you when my kid was growing up?? Thank you very much for explaining in such a "simple" way how to actually try and communicate with our kids

Well, maybe you can take something from what she said and use it in your life. Or, if you can't, then good that you have your shit together. Maybe you just enjoyed listening to what she had to say.
