My late dad had been a Sgt. in the local Sarnia militia unit, the 26th field battery R.C.A. before the war. He was Commissioned in the Essex Scots while in England, but was assigned for combat duty to the South Saskatchewan Regiment. He was not happy about that. Still, the two regiments fought side by side often, both being in the Second Division. I've read in his letters home to my mother that he requested transfer to the Essex Scottish more than once. But, regardless of being very ancestrally qualified he was turned down.
