The DHMIS Show is Way Better Than it Should be
Ойын-сауық
I did not enjoy the original DHMIS as much as everyone else but the Don't Hug Me I'm Scared show is incredible and needs more people to watch it.
The KZread sensation comes to Channel 4. The show follows Red Guy, Yellow Guy and Duck as they learn everything there is to know with the help of some friendly talking objects, in a comedy-horror puppet show.

"Turned basically into FNAF. With complex lore no one actually cares about" Already disagree there. I wouldn't say DHMIS ever had any "lore" at all. It had commentary. A message against corporate TV told linearly through the story, and the easter eggs and ARG-esque bonus videos are really just meant to emphasize what's already pretty clear if you just watch the series casually. This is what DHMIS is really about to me. Not the gore, not the "complex lore", but the message.

@Orange I have some great news for you, then. There's multiple horror/horror-comedy musicals. The first one that immediately comes to mind for me is Sweeney Todd (watch the "in concert" version if you're interested in it, that one's the best recording of it) and the second one is The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals. TGWDLM is available for free on KZread, and is one of the best paced horror-comedy things I've ever seen. I also recommend Little Shop of Horrors, which is literally based on an old B-movie horror film. These probably won't have you wetting the bed or having nightmares, but they still do what they do very well.

The thing that started cracking me up a lot in episode 2 was it’s description. It was just “duck finds out that he is *dead* because he forgot to drink water”
one note: the original show one of its biggest sponsors was Channel 4, so it is understood why they support the show by broadcasting it on their platform
that first 25 seconds was the biggest jumble of false things ever 💀 the original series wasnt just a “horror comedy” it was meant to be like lore structured for the fans it gained, even from the first episode it was full of hidden things and still some people believe it was “just meant to be how not to be creative for kids”

I definitely feel like he sorta misunderstood what DHMIS is meant to be, though this could also be bias since I’ve grown with fnaf since nearly the beginning before fnaf 2 Both shows always had some level of lore, but also had a message of some kind. That being well, it’s not that simple to teach kids these subjects. At least that’s for the original series, I feel for here however it kinda takes a different approach where it’s more like how it can be twisted in a way, which is sort of like the originals but not. Not to say it’s a bad thing, I really love both of the shows in my opinion, but I don’t think it’s as complex as say fnaf, even if it does got some lore stuff like the fact that Roy has still been part of the whole show, most likely alongside Lesley Also I feel it isn’t exactly a bad thing to do what fnaf did with complex lore, if that complex lore is also thought out. The main issue with fnaf so far other than not being given enough of a character to truly care about and it being more silent protagonists or bare ones, is the fact the lore didn’t feel thought out. Making it kinda confusing. Compare it to inscryption where the lore is complex… but actually SOLVABLE. That’s just my personal take, but yeah from at least 2 and onwards, dhmis always had a sort of story, it’s just up to us to sorta interpret what exactly it was, and the new series kinda hinting to that story
This feels like a perfect transition from KZread to TV. The tone and the general feel from the original stays the same just expanded out to a 22min format. I feel bad that I had to pirate this show because I really enjoyed what I saw and would be happy to pay for the full series on iTunes or a blu ray set. The quality of the series from it being a KZread series is rare.
"extremely complex lore that nobody cares about." 😐 nobody = you
THIS!!! For me, I love the original and the new one for different reasons. In my opinion, the original was creepier and more VAGUE in what was going on. It was a jumbled mess of weirdness you have to interpret. Each of the 3 characters had LESS personality and felt more like tools for the story. Also Roy was creepier in the original. Now in the new one, they each have SO much more personality. The first time Red guy yelled gave me WHIPLASH 🤣. The stories are chaotic but more fleshed out and has more substance that just horror. Also, like you mentioned, the humor is great in the new one (more like an updated version of the humor from the original). The awesome part is BOTH the new and old share the concept of a crazy teacher messing up everything for the 3.
Honestly, it’s kinda sad they got rid of the original plot.

I'd definitely disagree. I'd say in the original series, the horror is slightly overblown as scarier than it is and I think that comes from surprise. We were surprised by it when we first watched it, but now we're expecting it. I'd say a scene like the yellow guy getting his hand cut off by the machine or the stain duck dying is scarier than anything in the original 6. It has more of a slow burn surreal horror thing that the original does to an extent (things being increasingly not quite right until the reveal), but there's more time to play with it now

I don't think it was toned down particularly. Certainly not in the gore area anyway, which I would say only the healthy eating one matched from KZread, the rest were pretty tame. Definitely agree. Its pretty good by TV standards. Wonderful use of different media types, and a faithful adapatation. I will say that I think the horror, and music of the youtube series far surpasses anything from the show. And I think the themes of the youtube series are very strong and pointed, which makes each of those episodes very memorable(Notable standouts for me were the religious, technology, and time episodes.)Which makes sense giving the series' shorter runtime and tighter focus. However I do think the show is a lot funnier, and loaded with lots of great visual gags, and quips(Restraunt-style meals).
I vividly remember watching KZread in 2016, and going to the DHIMS channel waiting for the sixth episode pretty much every day. I dunno why I was such a big fan lol

Ay, 100 Gecs album cover in the background. I like how the 'show series' seems to play the main characters as either serious and confused about their scenario, or happily playing along, almost depending on who the show wants to focus on that episode. The "Death" episode where Duck is cheeky about his situation the entire time after he was heavily against the episode of the "Job" plays well to my humour, and I find it my favourite episode so far. Think the worst episode to me was "Travel" but I just don't like how Reds' theme is how he wants to leave his supposed friends to go somewhere quiet and boring.
Oooookay, this is gonna be the start of my debut cause looking through these comments, I'm scared no one has caught the connections between the youtube shorts and the official show. No one has even mentioned yellow guy's father.

I feel as if the horror moments do wonders in displaying the proper problem of the episode. Every episode has it's own message about society, but the overall theme is that of the squandering of children's media. The horror moments present the fact that we should be scared about these problems, as kids often are when they learn about them. but then in a few seconds, everything goes back to normal, as if nothing happened. its an allegory for the media removing problems from the public eye.
Your horror pacing point is also my one criticism. Each climax of the episodes had so much potential, but it only feels half reached
i really love the new dhmis show. i don’t think a show made me laugh this hard in a long time. literally every joke lands and the timing and delivery are just fantastic! i also love that every episode has a segment with a unique artstyle. dhmis is truly creative and stands out as its own thing in a world where so many shows are just the same thing over and over again.
Actually the lore ain't just something nobody cares about. It is completely cannon and everyone loves it
That first episode was absolutely WILD. To me it felt like the most “shock horror” episode of the whole season in the best ways. I loved the low key referencing of the care hound up until the scene where we finally meet it and the design of The puppet was so cool. Then literally every single moment that plays out after that until the end had me legitimately screaming out loud lol. They absolutely nailed how disorientating the series of events was as it was taking place in a way that made me feel like I was there with them!!
I think the first was best from a song point and second series for more lore
Ok, ok... They do have official names. There's Red Guy, Yellow Guy, and Duck.
(Spoilers Ahead) The point about the pacing is absolutely valid, and tbh I don't remember enough to say if I agree or not, but it's important to note that this fits in with the lore that is established in the last episode. Basically, the horror stuff is thrown at you and then taken away.. because that's the characters being reset/replaced. The one we were just with has died or... something, and now they've been replaced. And so, the show goes on like nothing happened, because to the characters.. nothing DID really happen

@@oranplan1630 if you’re talking about gore that happens to the main characters, some of it can be attributed to cartoon logic. Like the coffin cutting off ducks hand and it being fine in the very next shot. Duck was already supposed to be ‘dead’ in this episode so it seems like a contradiction if his replacement was also dead. In the first episode, their entire time in the workplace actually took place in a brief instant during the work song. Think of the lion the witch and the wardrobe - once they found their way back home they became kids again and returned to the exact moment where they left. Therefore, yellow guys injury probably doesn’t mean anything in the grand scheme of things
I don't think we really have to worry too much about it not being accessible, the episodes are all over youtube, and if/when they get deleted, others will pop up. I do hope they release it in America though, as honestly it deserves financial success (which I feel it won't truly get with just a UK release), which hopefully will allow at least a Season 2.

I agree with you about the original series. I loved the lore and songs of the original but the character building wasn’t as good. I really like how all of the characters interact now and how they’re more fleshed out. I think if they work on songs more for the next season it will be a fantastic show. And yeah the UK network is an issue if they want reach a larger audience 😊
The official names of the characters is Red Guy,Duck and Yellow Guy. It was in a official episode description.
Completely disagree: the fact that you talked about the fandom's view of the original yt show instead of yours is not a good sign. The original series is not only anxiety inducing (at least for me) but also very well paced and this "lore" you're talking about is nowhere to be found. In fact, the creators of dhmis (Becky Sloan and Joe Pelling) stated that "all theories are correct", since the show does not seem to represent only one thing, but a lot of ideas and criticism towards multiple entities such as corporate television or education. What I'm getting at is that the original web series holds a very vague meaning, and that's what makes it the most interesting, along with its insane production value, imagery and horror. The TV show, meanwhile, does things differently, but at the same time not that different. The show gives more personality to characters, and tells more meta/surrealist stories in a longer, more plot-oriented format. It's both when they take the story of the episode seriously, and when they demolish the fourth wall, that the show shines the brightest, in my opinion. The details, references, easter eggs and foreshadowings show the passion put into the project, and also give more life to the episodes, but I wouldn't say they're the reason the show is good. Now, what the show does very similarly to the web-series, is that the meaning is, again, very vague: I feel like you could get a lot of good meanings out of each episode, and it just keeps getting better the more times you watch them. The web-series are very good and horrifying, and the new show is also very good, although a little bit underwhelming at times (mainly the first episode) but I still like it a lot, and I think they exploit the new format masterfuly. My favourite episode is "episode 2: death", very closely followed by 5 and 6, wich end the show in an spectacular manner. Also to people who think that there's going to be a season two: it's not going to happen. This show took a whole lot of time and work and sweats I reckon, and I think (correct me if I'm wrong) that there has not been any related response from the creators about making a second season. Holy shit I wrote an entire novel

so idk if i belong here considering i genuinely LOVE the original shorts-- i always appreciated them more as dark/surreal comedy than horror too but you're also so right about what the TV series does well, which is A Lot. the humor really shines because the characters get more time to interact and have the scenes "breathe" which makes everything feel more lively. it's just a treat to watch in almost every aspect
Episode 1 of the tv series is perfect. Pacing, humor, and message culminate in the perfect episode of DHMIS
Thank you for being one of the few people to understand that sometimes characters say and do things solely for the sake of being funny and/or weird, and there’s usually no deeper meaning behind it I’d even argue that the Leslie scene, the most “lore heavy” scene in the show, was never meant to be taken so seriously and was only added to set up the shredder joke at the end My biggest fear about the show is that the fanbase is gonna turn on it once they realize its not that deep and their theories were all a waste of time
I agree with loads of these points (although I did enjoy the original shorts). I especially agree with the fact that the horror elements are often too short, even just holding on a few more seconds could do so much
I personally feel like the shorts did what they did perfectly. They had catchy songs that had a deeper social message and genuinely scary horror for flavor. The show expands and adds in some ways and lags behind in others in a way I wasn't expecting. I feel like the songs just straight up and down are not as good this time around or are even given as much focus as before. They also decided to really bring the characters personality to the forefront. They didn't really have too much before because that wasn't really the focus but now they are all much more fleshed out especially duck who even in the first thirty seconds I could tell was much more of a real character. I'd argue the biggest change is the amount of humor. There may have been maybe a joke or two in the shorts but the show I feel fully changed genres into a horror comedy and on one hand it's very funny but on the other hand I feel it kinda takes the focus away from the horror. The show doesn't have anything nearly as horrifying as the yellow guy eating duck scene. Ultimately what I feel like is that it's missing a huge part of what made me love the original shorts. But on another hand it replaces them with something else that I think might but as good. It's just hard to tell because it's hard to get past wanting it to be what it was before. For me the songs are the biggest thing. That was the entire show before but now they are one of the weaker aspects of the new show. Not even weak in the grand scheme of things but weak compared to the past songs. They just arnt as catchy, or memorable. There are exceptions like big day but the ending just fizzles out. The "innocent song leads into sinister message leads into viceral horror formula" was GOLDEN and not a SINGLE new song uses it. I feel like some like family just meiander around. That song wasn't funny scary OR catchy. Dreams was intentionally bad and it is still more memorable then alot of these songs. But then they do do alot of really interesting clever things in the show the shorts could never do. The moment when the suitcase leaves in the middle of the song and it's just quiet and uncomfortable is PERFECT. Memories was genuinely very disturbing. The idea of a teacher dying in the middle of the song is horrifying. All of the puppetry is on a whole other level. Ultimately I love the new show quite a bit but I feel the original shorts are all time classics in a way the show just wasn't for me.

The media theory killed alot of the creativity of the original show in terms of theories. So finally the show has kinda been let loose to be the true horror comedy it was supposed to be. The lore is pretty confusing but I cant even complain new show genuinely had me laughing alot more than I expected. Becky and Joe really outdone themselves this time again
the only thing i dont like is the split personality thing on the yellow man
I don't think the horror and comedy are really that separate in dhmis. Its surrealness lends itself well to both. There are a lot of times when it's hard to tell if something is supposed to be funny or scary.
I think the word you're looking for when comparing the original to fnaf is "theorybaiting". Essentially hinting at deep conspiracies that you haven't really written yet, then riding off fan theories when you do eventually have to reveal what's "happening" And to be honest, the finalés of both the web series and tv show do this - with yellow guy's dad and leslie respectively. The entertainment honestly comes from the characters' interactions with their situation - being trapped in a hostile childrens' show - rather than from whatever evil mastermind is pulling the strings. It's why the gang using a car to escape the show and not understanding the real world works so well, and the book of lore sorta doesn't.
i absolutely loved this show. it gives me the impression that although you can look for lore, you don't need to, and i'd even go as far as to say it makes a commentary on lore as unimportant to audience enjoyment with the end being so anticlimactic. all these seemingly important clues are culminated into one object, only for it to be destroyed as the characters laughed. about the uk only thing, i honestly don't see that as an issue. having an international audience blew the original show way out of proportion, gave it fabricated meaning and filtered out some of its charm. british humour is wildly different from humour around the world and working more locally reduces the need to pander to so many tastes.
I watched it on youtube, it really was even better than the original series.

Great video tho I would say the original show had a lottttt of lore
Honestly, while I enjoyed the show, I feel like the quality dropped tremendously. Especially the songs! The songs in the yt series were super catchy and even in the pilot episode.

@@MiyuwiTV agreed here, I think considering it’s a bit more musical it shadows some songs, but to me it really feels a lot like the originals

@@skelebonez1349 yeah I really thought the songs in episode 2 were done very well and the electricity song in episode 6 I especially like the end of the memories song and how it sounded like yellow guy was going to cry

Yes, I agree that the TV show is better than the original. I find the new much scarier, because, as you said, the characters are more laid out and everything is more meaningful. In the original, for example, when Yellow guy ate Duck, I didn't care much, but when Duck dies in this show and the others try to move on without him I felt honestly sad and scared that that happens to someone in my family.
