The DETAILS That Make Steph Curry the Best Shooter Ever 🔬

Спорт

There's so much that goes into this, but I figured I'd put together a few of the major details I see when I watch Steph play. Most of this he's never thought about or trained for consciously, but that doesn't mean you can't get to work on these techniques!

I've said that too. People talk about Reggie, Chauncey Billups, and Rip moving off the ball, and while those guys were definitely great at it, I don't think they moved quite like Steph does, especially not while being the focal point of an offense, or even a defense, for that matter.

Believe it or not, when I was younger, I use to shoot and play like this and in middle school, It finally became natural instinct because of the repetition. In 9th to 11 grade, I was basically unguardable on the perimeter and had stupid range. I’m 27 and I suck so much ass now. But what I contribute my ability to shoot and play like him when I was younger was because I use to play with my older brother and his friends who were all 4 years older than me. I had to have a fast release, get a good arc, and quickly get into my shooting form before I even stop moving or else I was going to get blocked because they were all taller. The only thought I had in my head at when I played was don’t get blocked. That mentality made me practice how to get my shot up fast and high. I think steph also might’ve had some similarities to how he grew up playing ball because he was a small kid and always playing taller and faster guys. Even melo ball has the same tendicies with his shot and he grew up always playing taller guys. If you want your kids to play like steph, make them grow up playing with taller guys.

Steph does the work early, that's why he has such a quick and accurate shot even after all his crazy dribbling or offball relocating; his mechanics naturally transition into his shot, instead of waiting until his movement is done first. The example of him starting to raise the ball up even though he's only planted his 1st foot down on his 1-2 is a perfect example; by itself it probably only saves a few microseconds, but if he's doing similar things with all other parts of his mechanics it's going to add up. Do the work early and transition each tiny part of the mechanics smoothly into each other.

I think ur missing that when he brings his ball up. He has his hand on the side of the ball rather than under the ball. This mean that he can keep the ball close to his body and make the distance to bring the ball up shorter and quicker

To me what makes Curry to be able to be the best shooter ever is his absurd all time ball handling (not dribbling), that makes him able to bring the ball up to his gather and let it fly faster than anyone I have ever seen, with the best touch/feel. Mechanically wise, I think the most important (and probably the only "requirement") of his shooting form, is bringing the ball up to his gather point (around his right jaw/eyebrow area) and let it fly ASAP to not loose any momentum. It's not a one motion shot per se, but he does this so fast it looks like one motion . That is my take after seeing, studying, copying, emulating the best ever in this aspect of the game, which again I consider is allowed by his insane BALL HANDLING.

This is from my own observation but this is what I gather from seeing Steph shoot Lower Release Point Most players I see, tall ones especially have their release above their heads while Steph is lower. Even in this video, his release point is around his face area or slightly higher. Mostly lower body His upper body is just follow-through. All the power comes from his base. Unlike two motion shooters like MJ or Kobe, his legs do most of the work. He used to shoot like a slingshot during high school and junior high from the waist, so maybe that's where it comes from. His dad taught him to have a higher release point but the power comes from lower body 45 Degree When Holding The Ball If you see the front view of Steph as the ball reaches it's apex, his hand is angled on a 45 degree angle. I believe when he holds the ball in his shot pocket, he's holding the ball diagonally. So when he lifts his arm, it'll be on a diagonal 45 degree angle. When he release the ball, he has a gooseneck follow through which then change the ball rotation straight and give's it a spin. Harden also has a 45 degree diagonal angle on his relase point. Players Tray Young, he places his hands on top of the ball. Traditionally, we're taught to have the U looking elbow and palm facing upwards to the sky on the shot pocket, but this gives stress on the arm and could lead to chicken wing. That's what I saw anyway

Everything you said is right on, but that last point, my man, mere mortals have a hard time just practicing 3-pointers in a controlled manner. If everyone practices shooting off-balance, from half court, leaning forward, etc., my guess is it'll mess up their normal shooting accuracy. Steph is from another planet and I don't think what applies to him applies to others.

Often, both his feet are on the ground before he raises the ball to shoot. Having just the one foot in the ground is rare for him and most good NBA 3-point shooters. Additionally, he and most shooters with a fast release, are quick at getting the ball from their waist to their set point so it can be very difficult to identify the exact moment when he begins his shot.
