The Destroyed 4th Century Buddhas of Afghanistan

DID YOU KNOW that a town called Bamiyan in Afghanistan marks the Westernmost expansion of Buddhism in the history of the world?
Way back in the 4th Century, people in Bamiyan carved two MASSIVE Buddha statues (literally) into the mountain and they stood strong for 1,600+ years, until they were ruthlessly destroyed by the Taliban in 2001... It's one of the saddest stories known to mankind, but it was still an incredible site to visit!
After spending 3 days in Bamiyan, I am COMPLETELY AMAZED by the nature around this mountainous area, as well as the amazing people who have welcomed me here with open arms! For decades, Bamiyan has been recognized as the safest and most stable place in the Afghanistan -- which certainly felt like the truth when I was there a few weeks ago... but then the horrible news came that 2 bomb blasts rocked the main marketplace -- where much of this video was shot.
It breaks my heart that the innocent people of Afghanistan must risk their lives every time they step outside. Afghanistan is one of my favorite countries in the world, and I hope that you guys have been enjoying this series on my second visit to the country. I still have 4 more videos to share!

Have you heard of Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, China? The stone Buddhas are also carved into a mountain, and from 500 AD to about 1970, they were completely untouched. It was pretty spectacular to be there and see things in caves that were untouched for 1500 years. It reminds me a lot of the Bamiyan Buddhas.

Buddhist kings always provided the opportunity to practice any religion because the lord Buddha always said to live in harmony with other religions. But what happened in the end?? Eventually other religions survived and Buddhism was buried ☹️ This is not something I did to insult any religion, so there is no need for conflict

In 1975, as a Dutch Australian world traveller I travelled overland for one year travelling from Europe to Australia. This was the era of the hippie smokers who travelled to Afghanistan, Nepal and Morocco etc. I was part of that amazing time when freedom to travel was different to today. I remember being on the back a ute passing through Bamiyan and I saw the Buddha statues. I remember walking up to those magnificent lakes set in the raw pristine mountain setting of Bandi Amir. Thank you for bringing back the wonderful memories of that time. My best friend in Australia is an Afghani man who represents the culture, kindness and hospitality of what you show in your video. His beautiful wife brings us tea just like the cute little girl. His house interior represents Afghanistan and is always a pleasure to visit as well as to eat the fine Afghani food. Therefore I can say that I continue to connect to Bamiyan through my friend which pleases me greatly. Bamiyan certainly was one of the highlights of the trip to Australia. But as a world traveller there are so many amazing highlights to enjoy and as I am about to turn 70 years old I delight in watching KZread videos which trigger so many spectacular memories for me which ultimately is what we have left to ponder upon as the bones start to creak and energies start to wane. So enjoy your further travels. You will surely enjoy the memories when you turn 70. Cheers from the KZread channel Train Lord in South Australia.

Basically, what you say is really similiar to those of Nazis and stop kidding yourself. You are so ashamed to have similiar ideas to those of the Nazis. Each religion has its good and bad elements and eradicating a religion is neither practical nor has yielded a justifiable result. You're only spreading fear and hate with your statements. The sad truth is your ideas are not really different from those of neo-Nazis and white supremacists.

I don't think so, it's more nuanced than that. Mullah Omar wanted to preserve these statues at first because he understood the historical beauty of them and they're potential to attract people. But then Afghanistan was under sanctions and the people were suffering and starving because of these sanctions. The Taliban government at the time was getting requests from foreign organizations and countries to restore the Buddha's of Bamyan, but when they asked for foreign aid instead the organization's and countries denied it. So Mullah Omar was disgusted by these people who were willing to focus on the statues more than on helping actual people. I'm not pro Taliban by any means, they've done horrible crimes against the people of Afghanistan, but I believe it's disingenuous to say the destruction of these statues was a crime against humanity. The crime against humanity is the actions of the US regime imposing it's imperial will and crushing nations around the world economically and militarily. Because of the US the Buddha's of Bamyan were destroyed, and if you think that's a stretch you're really kidding yourself.

It was done by Pakistan, initially the Talibans who are Pakistani proxy fired rockets at the Buddha but it didn't break, so the explosive came from Pakistan in a Pakistani truck, they put the explosive around the Buddha and blew it to piece it shock the whole province and as a result of this the Muslims faced many calamities in Buddhist countries as a retaliation. But this was a political not Islamic, coz in 10th century the Muslims complain about Buddha in Muslim country so the scholars came from Egypt and saw that ppl don't pray at Buddha so they said to carve out the face of Buddha, as in Islam it id forbidden to make human idols and sculptures or pictures, so after carving out the face the Buddha was allowed to stay according to Islamic ruling.

@Tel Aviv It is not where islam goes things get destroyed, do some history search on particular thing before you comment, I'm Afghan and Pakistan destroyed it to cripple Afghan economy, as Buddha was a tourist hotspot, they always took out all the grape vineyard out from the ground, they burned almond farm, they destroyed our water dams as they are lower end of water tributary. Islam doesn't have nothing to with political proxies such as Taliban and IS.

If You Want True Peace Then Follow Jesus (AS) The graven images of their gods you are to burn with fire; you shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it for yourselves, or you will be snared by it, for it is an abomination to the Lord your God. Deuteronomy 7:25 He also put away the male cult prostitutes from the land and removed all the idols which his fathers had made. 1 Kings 15:12 All of her idols will be smashed, All of her earnings will be burned with fire And all of her images I will make desolate, For she collected them from a harlot’s earnings, And to the earnings of a harlot they will return. Micah 1:7 “I will cut off your carved images And your sacred pillars from among you, So that you will no longer bow down To the work of your hands. Micah 5:13 Bible
