I know the QB-on-a-rookie-deal spiel has been around a long time, but the reality is that only two QBs in the last 17 years have won a Super Bowl on their rookie deal; and one of them was Patrick Mahomes, who evidently is talented enough to also win on 'normal' contract.

It is a bit of fallacy but it's still much easier to work around the salary cap when your normally most expensive player is working on a deep discount. Part of what made the Pats relevant for two decades was Tom Brady being willing to take a pay cut so they could take other guys. I feel like Carson Wentz should count as a third because he was still a big part of what won them their first set of games but at the same the roster was strong enough top to bottom to be able to survive with a backup QB.

I count three: Eli Manning (2007 season; won in Feb 2008); Russell Wilson (2013 season); Patrick Mahomes (2019 season). Interestingly, of the QBs during these last 17 years that won their first SB after their rookie deal (Drew Brees, Nick Foles, Matt Stafford), the only one to win with the team that drafted him was Nick Foles. Drew Brees was a free agent before signing with the Saints, and Matt Stafford was traded to the Rams where he immediately won the SB. Since Buffalo doesn't plan on trading Josh Allen or letting him become a free agent the Brees and Stafford examples don't help. Unless Josh Allen decides to become the backup the Foles example isn't helpful either.

You have to adjust your sample size. The QB rookie scale didn't start until 2011 with Cam Newton. So of the 26 participants since then, 12 of them were on a rookie deal including Nick Foles/Carson Wentz Year. 6 of those were Tom Brady, 2 were Mahomes on his extension and 2 were Peyton Manning. So yes, unless you have a HOF QB, the data does suggest a rookie QB contract gives you more leeway for roster construction.

You can't count any QB rookie deals before the collective bargaining agreement, rookies then made a lot more money compared to rookies nowadays so the cap hit was worse for a rookie than a vet QB, so Staffords (and QBs before him) hurt the chances of the teams more than helped them get other players to fill out the roster

It sounds simple on paper, but it's so rare to have sustained excellence in the draft. Even getting half your picks to hit is not common. The Bills probably aren't going to be able to jumpstart via the draft to the extent that the Chiefs did, simply because the Chiefs got way more than a normal amount of starting talent out of the last two years. The Bills will still be a playoff team as long as Allen is under center. But it's probably a minimum of two seasons struggling just to take the division before they're competing for the Super Bowl.

Excellent topic for a video! Depending on how the rest of the offseason goes for the Bills, they could be a fascinating team coming into the 2024. I look at them as a team in need of a roster refresh: I felt that they had reached their ceiling with their current roster, and that they neeeded to do something different in order to reach the Super Bowl. Maybe that refresh isn't complete until 2025 or 2026. But, a roster refresh could ensure that their window of contention widens, as opposed to it shrinking by making some all-in moves for 2024. Who knows: maybe the Chiefs are in decline by the time that the Bills are ready to rise up again. I think that during this Josh Allen Bills run, they have just not been strong enough on the lines in order to reach the Super Bowl. If I were running the Bills right now, that would be something that I would prioritize. While they may not have a #1 receiver right now, perhaps a successful offense could be developed for them that is based around James Cook and their two good tight ends. In a way, it could be reminscint of how the Chiefs adjusted their offense without Tyreek Hill.

The Chiefs reason for circumventing the cap isn’t Travis Kelce. It’s simply that they draft better than everyone else. They have arguably the best defense in the NFL while being the youngest defense in the NFL. Pacheco, Sneed, Joshua Williams, Trey Smith, Creed Humphrey, Leo Chenal, and Willy Gay are all starter (some pro bowl caliber players) that were drafted 3rd round or later just in the last 4 years.

@@Orto4956 it definitely arguably but the only defense I’d consider is the Ravens. The Chiefs finished the second best defense for ppg and was quite clearly the best defense throughout the playoffs. Steelers despite TJ Watt are nowhere near the Chiefs defense last year. The Brown despite being great at advanced stats like success rate and epa/play they didn’t really pass the eye test. The advanced stats also didn’t translate to ppg allowed and the defense was exposed in the playoffs. That’s why id say that the Chiefs were the best defense last year if you want to say the Ravens I won’t argue with you.

Well said. And, I like what you showed on the screen at the end of the video - our now second-year TE, and cast of rookie WRs may be better than most think next year, and really pick up the slack for Josh Allen after the dismissal of Diggs, and other impactful players like Gabe Davis. All of what you covered is pretty accurate, if not right on the money. As a Bills fan, I think it's a crying shame that this team from Western New York still hasn't captured their championship. The "Thirteen Seconds" playoff loss will forever sting until a SB trophy is affectionately held by Josh Allen, and after that it'll likely still be a sore spot. I contend, with very little doubt about it, that if the had gotten Bills get past Kansas City with their three point lead and thirteen seconds showing on the clock, they win it all that year. They should be 2021 SB Championships right now. Think of all the positive momentum/feel of invincibility one team likely inherited from that disastrous/epic playoff win, and yet, all the heartbreak turned into a re-committed drive and fight to go forward for Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills; the game was resounding enough to turn the fate of a franchise for a decade! Fortunately, these most recent editions of the Buffalo Bills stayed mentally tough! I'm proud of my Buffalo Bills for battling as much as they have, while overcoming so much. They don't have any championships or many trophies yet to admire but, just as the "SB Bills" of the early nineties were under Marv Levy, and led by QB Jim Kelly, today's Buffalo Bills, also, are indeed winners. Josh Allen is a winner, a warrior, and that mentality channels through the team. And someday he'll hoist that Lombardi Trophy as the entire city of Buffalo, NY cry tears of joy (and then parties for two weeks straight!)! I think the fans deserve it as much as the players - few teams can argue that they have more dedicated fans than those from the region of Western, NY/Buffalo! Thank you!

2011 (I think) is when NFLPA said 'enough' and capped out of control cap draining rookie contracts. Now the distribution has flipped. Vets (intentional or not) are now breaking the bank and preventing other players from being payed and surrounding talent struggles to stay on the roster. When Jefferson and Jackson said "I want to break the bank" what I heard is: 'I want to break my team.' I very very very rarely side with owners but most owners net between $15-$30M a year after paying the bills. That's less than their star players and not guaranteed.

People talking about Diggs completely miss the problem in Buffalo. They have been terrible drafting and terrible in free agency the last 3 years. You can say “Diggs isn’t that important to the offense, he disappeared last season.” Okay? Why did the front office offer him a 26m/year extension. Why did they give a 33 year old Von Miller 20mil/year. Why can’t they draft any good players to replace/add depth to an aging secondary. If they could have avoided these mistakes they could be having a great offseason even with losing everyone. Without diggs or Von on the roster they’d have another nearly 50 mil

Diggs didn't play like a top 10 WR last half of the season, the WR3 had more catches, yards and TDs on fewer targets. You can talk all you want about good teams with great players on rookie contracts but who? The Bills won out when they needed to with their WR1 ineffective and WR2 ineffective or injured. Their defense was decimated by injury. People want to talk about Miller but Floyd isn't worth a huge contract to re sign. He also disappeared late in the season. Von took a pay cut in the off-season too. The team still has almost all the players they went 6-2 with in the second half of the season and added depth. A good couple of draft picks and $10M freed up on June 1 will help them reload. Salty? I think that's reserved for those hoping the Bills have regressed. That's why they play the games.

Can't wait to revisit these threads when the Bills win the division again - Buffalo's defense will most likely improve next year with a healthy Milano and budding star in Bernard. Douglas and Benford are a top 10 CB duo. Safeties will be less disciplined but will be playing faster. Von Miller looked closer to himself vs the Chiefs in the playoffs. Pass rush will need to be improved but let's not forget how Floyd's production plummeted after Jones tore his pectoral. Him being back in the middle with Ed Oliver is a very underrated ingredient to outside production. AJ Epenesa will get more snaps and has a knack for making big plays at big moments. White, Poyer, and Hyde all are washed or severely injured by the end of the season as much as it hurts to say that. Will need to get younger in the secondary but I consider that a net positive. Bills are bringing back everyone who contributed the most on offense during the second half of the season outside of their center - will be addressed in the draft im sure, but increased their depth with the Collins signing. Brown and Torrence are great on right side, Dawkins is elite on the left. Shakir, Cook, Kincaid are all very good pass catching options, and will likely draft 2 WRs in the draft early.

Let’s be honest: the Bills window closed on that “13 seconds” divisional game against the Chiefs. In 2021, they were top 5 on both sides of the ball and lost 6 regular season games by a total of 49 points. They had a point differential of plus 206. They were elite as elite comes and arguably the best team in the league. And then lost an unfathomable heartbreaker in which Josh Allen threw 4 tds with a 136 rating. It’s hard to come back from that.

If the player gets out of the way to keep from getting a penalty, Kelce turns the opposite direction or curls in for an easy catch. If all else fails, Kelce simply pushes the defensive player out of the way, then turns right or left. He needs to be penalized for what he does to knock down that massive, disgusting ego of his.

Even Rashee Rice quietly put up 900+ yards as a rookie and since he didn’t kill anyone in that crash, he won’t be another Ruggs so he will be back at some point and he could potentially be a borderline elite receiver on a discount for at least 2 years. Brah, your analysis is way off. Not every decision is based on money. Not every win and lose is because of cap space. Let a hyper bills fan key you in on what Bean is doing. Diggs, not only forced his way out, but has suffered serious production decline. He did us a favor forcing his way out. Tre White, hasn't really played in 2 and a half seasons. Jordan Poyer, old and slow, had to go. Leonard Floyd was only on the team one season, why is he even mentioned as a part of a roster reset? Gabe Davis, great run blocker, catches deep balls well, sucks at everything else. Has always had a very high drop rate, Jax overpaid. Mitch is the only one who could be considered a "cap casualty" but I don't think so, he also suffered decline, and this is a stacked offensive line draft upcoming. Von took a pay cut. Josh restructures every year it seems, so none of those cap hits will remain the same. Travis Kelce is a great player, but his salary doesn't have that much impact. His play, and his QBs play have more to do with it. And even then, the bills are a great team, and just as good as the chiefs. Win some, lose some. Not like the chiefs blew us out. These decisions are about skills, not salary. You wait, next year's Bills roster will be better than last year's.

Nyhiem Hines - Didn’t play all year tore his ACL off field right before the season started. Deonte Harty- Outside of his spectacular punt return in the final game he did not have much of an impact and even flubbed a punt that almost cost them a game against the Chargers. Tre White - Was playing well but tore his Achilles early in the season and was replaced by Rasual Douglas who played great and is still on the roster. Gabe Davis- Solid player just not a true WR2 he was replaced by the signing of Curtis Samuel who’s about as good as Davis and might be a better fit for the Bills offense. Micha Hyde- Was a solid safety in 2023 but far from the elite player he once was. The Bills replaced him with Mike Edwards who’s younger and about as good as Hyde was in 2023. Jordan Poyer- Solid player in 2023 but age and nagging injuries caught up to him. He was still solid in 2023 but far from the player he once was. He is replaced by Taylor Rapp who played well in spot duty in 2023 with the Bills and was a starter in the past. Mitch Morse - This one may be a loss on talent they are moving Connor McGovern to center which should fill in for Morse well but then they resigned David Edwards to take the guard spot. Edwards isn’t bad but more ideally is a strong substitute player. Leonard Floyd- This is another one where the talent could be lost here but I do think they hope to get more out of Von Miller now that Miller is further removed from his late season 2022 ACL tear. Stefon Diggs- Probably the one that hurts the most but Diggs production dipped last 10 games of the season, probably was the right decision to move on. The rest of the losses were mostly marginal players that will either be replaced by mid to late round draft choices (of which the Bills have plenty) and or have already been replaced by other free agents They also still have two fairly high picks in the draft in picks 28 and 60 to try and fill in for Diggs and one or two other players they lost.

Of the players Buffalo released, none had a significant impact on their late season run. They became expendable

Please don't remind me of the Chargers' nightmare night in Jacksonville! I still haven't gotten over it. Damn Brandon Staley! Edit: That's the difference between the Bills and Chargers all-in situations, the Bills had a top coach, we didn't.

Bills situation is pretty much why the Eagles and Lions have to win within the next 3 years before they make some tough decisions.
