The Dennis Smith Jr. and Luka Doncic Dilemma in Dallas

As of this video, Dennis Smith Jr. has been out for the last couple weeks. According to some reports, there's been some tension between him and Rick Carlisle regarding his role in the offense and how he fits in next to Luka. It seems like those issues have went away though, but would it be better for the Mavs to trade Dennis for someone who's a better fit?

Dennis Smith Jr has improved his efficiency and has turned into a good shooter, he is not a good playmaker but when you have Doncic he doesn’t have to be. Obviously both Smith Jr and Doncic have to get better playing off ball but it could work. Smith Jr is going to be a really good player and the Mavericks just have to be patient with him.

Seb I think they should play in motion offense with a lot of handoffs and off ball screens looking for the open shot or going to the rim. Both of them should just constantly move off ball and they should be good together. If DSJ is running pick and roll Luka should be in the closer corner if help defense comes he just kicks out to him. If Luka is running pick and roll DSJ should be on the opposite side waiting to cut and get alley or shooting a corner three. Both of them have to shot more open jumpers. However its too early they have played only around 40 games together. Only time will tell. I see some Wade and Lebron in them as a duo. Although Lebron is miles ahead in athleticism but Luka is better shooter.

@dustin barlow No, you're wrong... DSJ needs to play off the ball and use his great speed for good cuts to the basket and he needs to learn how to play off the ball using off ball screens... remember "RIP" Hamilton? Something like that... Hamilton was a mediocre 3pt shooter but from mid range and in he was deadly because he had learned the UCon method of off the ball SG... DSJ could be great that way... not many guys can keep up with his speed... if Carlisle can set some screens down low for him to run past them he could be very good... and he also needs to learn how to be more elusive... add some pump fakes and dribble feints to his game... DSJ could be great at EVERY SINGLE ONE of those things... but he needs to adapt and try to get better... he's not a great PnR PG anyway... so why not try to become a great SG? He has the tools... all he needs to do now is listen to the people in his team and not his agent that has never dribbled a ball in his life...

@@nikolatesic1786 That's exactly what Carlisle tries to do... the Mavs do A LOT of handoffs... maybe more than any other team... it's their most used go to move.... but when things get tough he goes to Luka's PnR game because he knows how good Luka is at it... DSJ listens to his agent more than his coach... that's the real problem... and when your coach is a Hall of Fame level coach you should shut up and listen to him instead of some money hungry agent that only cares of you get a big contract for quick short term money... the agent doesn't give a fuck if DSJ wins a ring or anything... all he wants is max money for his payday...

Dennis should make this work. Luca is a better player than he is at this stage, but he could show that he will adapt in any situation and show he doesn't mind being the "Robin" in a duo. He shouldn't do it for Dallas, as they were willing to just let him go, but more for his overall value. He'll be second fiddle wherever he ends up (except maybe Orlando) so development should be the focus... he doesn't have to be the man there so it's the perfect time. Ego is a championship killer.

  • @paulbradley1224

@dustin barlow Nah, maybe teams like Cleveland would also be a good fit as they're solely dedicated to development of through the draft and 2nd/3rd year players. Orlando has no direction, and Miami is going to need the services of a slasher sooner than later when Wade retires. Depending on how their draft goes Dennis could be perfect for them. He has options, plus China isn't some kind of D league, they're paying players big bucks to go there so don't play them trash now.

Give Luca the warriors and while he'd do great, he wouldn't be as good as Curry and that's just obvious. How could Luca compete with Curry carrying the Warrior's early slump this season? You think Luca would've put up 30ppgs early this season with 50-50-90 shooting until Curry got his injury? You think Curry wouldn't be great being on the Mavs. Let me remind you how great these warriors were before Steph. You have to literally be delusional to call Luca best pg in the league. Westbrook is like 23% from 3 this season and his jumpshot is wack right now and I'd still say he's better than Luca.

It's not that simple, everyone has a role on the warriors and doesn't play outside the role, they are also more established players so they don't play for stats and only care about winning, with young players on the other hand, they want to prove that they can be the man and don't always put the team first( i think that this is also one of bostons main problems)

  • @bgtheone2903

The playstyle of most of the players on the warriors complement each other very well, they have had the most effective system in the NBA, and with so much garnered from their stars everyone else can thrive because there isn't much a single team defense can do to guard them. They are in a good situation, and no one on that team has players that go against their system. DSJ and Luka's playstyle's are very similar because they need the ball in their to be at third best, it's nothing wrong about that but they gotta get it together. So please don't not compare them or anyone to Golden State.

@Lakers fan CP3 changed his offball game - he's shooting more 3s per game than ever and raised his 3pt percentage. I've even seen him do this nice play where he's on point but then hands the ball to Harden and screens Harden's man. So yea, with good 3pt shooting, high basketball IQ, a willingness to assist each other, and playing good defense on the other end, you make it work. Wade fits that mold too (although you have to substitute 3pt with high strength in the other areas - we are talking about the greatest SG blocker of all time) . Unfortunately, DSJ is lacking in these areas, and it's not something you can fix overnight. As for Durant/Curry, Durant has always been a forward, sort of like how Jordan played where he doesn't usually bring the ball up. Instead, he's looking to get into an advantageous scoring position, for example a good post-up position.

His style of play is just not very well suited to the NBA. He's a Jokić type playmaker when he has the ball, but when he doesn't, he's borderline useless. In Euroleague, that isn't the issue, as point guards handle like 85% of ball handling duty, but in NBA, that responsibility is shared, reducing Teodosić's overall impact. Also, the guy is older player, he grew up with "old school", he loves mid range and floaters, and that's not something coaches want in modern day and age.

DSJ situation somehow reminds me of Larry Hughes during his Sixers days with Iverson. Here are my thoughts. 1) Mavs are trying to hide him while further developing him alongside the young Antetokounmpo and unleash them together next season. 2) DSJ's agency won't perhaps allow him to play in G League like what Lakers is doing with their young talents (Clarkson before and Isaac Binga now), which is somehow in line with... 3) Carlisle trying to be nice with that statement, where in truth is notorious for heavily playing only pro veterans. Luka may be clutch, but there are still plenty of opportunities in developing his shot selection and assist:TO ratio.

Mavs should try Dennis at SG. He's really explosive, and should be able to play off ball. Both are very young and still have huge potentials, but they also come with uncertainty. Injuries can be disastrous so it's better to keep depth for a team. There's still no way for Mavs to beat the Golden State or OKC so why not let the young duos turn more potential into assets?

Idgaf whats going on Im not taking Dennis Smith Jr over Luka. Ive noticed through this season and the last that Dennis Smith is already gaining the rep of not being coachable, having a very bad attitude and being too big for his bridges already. The man has Rose/Westbrook potential but has a horrible attitude. Like dude I understand you gotta have confidence but you gotta wait till your reputation backs it up. Look at Westbrook when he first came to the NBA he was very humble... now with his rep hes one of the most rudest dudes. With bad attitude on court but hey he worked and deserves it. You cant just come outta NCAA with that kinda attitude. Unless you the MAN and Dennis is not The MAN on his squad.

Carlisle's system is based heavily with the scheme of having 2 playmakers running the offense. DSJ and Luka mesh extremely well, but when a 3rd guy like Matthews or Barnes starts to hold the ball a lot, their scheme starts to buckle. I believe the Dallas media itself turned on DSJ with trade talks, because of Luka's dominance and their belief that guys like Barnes and Matthews dont hold much trade value in a scenario where the Mavs do try to shop for another established all star.

Dennis Smith Jr. Is a point guard given he is NOT a shooting guard and Luka Doncic is most effective as a primary playmaker. The chemistry there has not worked in a way that fully utilizes them. They either need to be sure the game plan will improve them or trade Smith, because they aren't going to get the most out of him and he will have his chance elsewhere. He is not in his best situation, if I'm Dennis I'm INSISTING on a trade so I can get my career off the ground before any possible injuries start rearing their head.

He's athletic, a good player, but he does look awkward on the floor. He just doesn't look like an NBA player. Not to be confused with individual talent, of course. Llull is more like Luka. Can run PnR, spot-up, pass, go 1v1 after swap. DSJ is ballhog, can't really spot up, can't pass consistently. He's a good, explosive cutter and volume off the dribble Shooter. Llull and Luka, understand the game, the pace, the sets and adjust, they have high basketball IQ. Hardly someone could say that for DSJ...

Llull is over 30 now, when he first came to real madrid, the biggest deal with him was his low iq, and that he made bad passes. He rush over plays and made bad decisions. It is a normal thing with young point guards. Dsjr is explosive, a good shooter (still improving), has a very high motor, and when he is motivated he is a good defender. He looks pretty much as young Llull. Point guards take time to develop, can't compare a guy of 20 years with one over 30. Only a guy as special as luka can compare with players way over his age.
