I had this on my watch later list for almost a year. It's a thoughtful analysis. I wish you had considered using more examples of women who are toss juggling a "juggling object" in this video. So many beautiful lady jugglers that could have fit in there. Perhaps it's an interesting point to look at tho - why do so many people have an idea of women choosing object manipulation and objects via other objects rather than toss juggling, even when there are wonderful women toss juggling out there.

The old school answer was pretty simple. It's not juggling unless the objects are continuously thrown and caught, and there is always at least one object in the air. The objection to it being continuous breaks the definition, perhaps unnecessarily. We used to say for it to be juggling it had to meet this criteria: with two hands, at least three objects and with one hand, at least two to meet the criteria. Other actions (and some multiplex patterns) are object manipulation, which is freely mixed in and of course this doesn't detract from acts that are mostly manipulation.

Really great video Luke! Was excited that you mentioned whip cracking, it's rare our community is included in juggling conversations even though there is a bit of overlap. Aaron Bonk just broke his world record for most catches while juggling and cracking whips! And there is a few routines like Wilke's Wonder, the Skip Over, Crazy 88, and others which I think would fit the definition of juggling, too :)

I think a lot of the beauty in juggling is due to the fact our brain is tricked to think the balls are connected to each ithers while they aren't

Right. I say in the video “not every example of juggling will fit every criteria, and that’s the point.” And that is the point. All of the tricks you mention fit the other 10 characteristics.

For me the definition of 'juggling' should include showmanship, swag and 'being cool' in front of a live audience. That's why I think the best juggler is still Kris Kremo, and 90's jugglers Paul Ponce, Dick Franco, Patrick Lemione. These guys have insane amounts of showmanship and cool.

Hmmmmmm..... Remind me to debate with you sometime on juggling theory and terminology and ideas sometime luke, that's something I think we would have fantastic debates about, perhaps we'll record them into like a podcast series or something. I say that, because I think you're aware I really want to get into doing juggling video essays myself someday, mine being focused on historical events in the juggling subculture and giving them context for outsiders to understand. I just need to find the time and energy to do that lol. But also because I'm probably going t record a response video to this either today or sometime soon, because I think there's an approach to "defining juggling" that you didn't take which I hold to. That would be the very strictest of definitions, of technical/traditional juggling. In that I would define juggling as the manipulation of N+1 objects, during which, there is no point where all of the N+1 objects are being fully controlled in such a way that at least 1 of the objects is not in danger of being "dropped" unless a movement is made to "catch" said object. In other words, a period of time manipulating N+1 objects, during which at least 1 object is always in some form of "falling". I describe it as such to include things like BBB/Pinball, as they include rolling a ball down your body in a way that if you did not make a movement to "catch" said object, would simply continue rolling off your body and eventually hit the floor. However, things like trapping the knob of a club between your chin and chest and swinging the club doesn't qualify, because as long as you continue to apply the pinching pressure, the club is in no danger of "falling" unless it is intervened with. This also disqualifies certain multiplexing, such as claymotion and box juggling, as those are about distinct periods of "falling" between distinct periods of control, same as kendama, or to be more jargony, there is a set/stable position, and the act of changing from one stable/set position to another via an act of "falling" (actually now that I think about it, that could be a tangential juggling class in itself, perhaps call it "block juggling" or something.).

This is already covered. The chin trap concept is covered perfectly by "trapping the object for an extended period between two body parts. Maybe you think juggling stops the moment an object can no longer fall? I covered that too by saying none of these have to continue indefinitely for it to still seem like juggling is continuing. Like the moments between notes or beats in music, the music hasn't stopped, and there's more coming in a moment. When you see someone doing claymotion, what do you think is happening if juggling is not happening? If you say "lots of throws and catches by the same person" then we have a word for that: juggling. What word would you use for "lots of throws and catches by the same person"?
