Its kinda boring if you never practiced it as a sport! But its also not the same! If a diver can go 80 m deep he can easily go 40 back and forth. But a free climber can fall pretty much everywhere. With freediving its more about technique and “will he or she make the declared dive depth” and wether he will do it fainting at the end or not (which would disqualify the athlete because its dangerous)

And there's me who can barely even dive to the bottom of the deepest section of a rec centre pool because of the many ear infections I had as a child lol. Always been fascinated by free diving.
What I cannot comprehend - and perhaps there's something I don't understand, is the lack of safety guards. For example: why was there not a flashing light(s) on the rope once through the arch? Why were there no tanked divers down there with oxygen ready to guide or assist? Someone tell me I'm wrong and why.

Free divers can't take on oxygen when their lungs are squeezed hence why safety divers only go down to 40 m max to deal with blackouts. So oxygen wouldn't have helped when below a certain depth. Not sure either why they didn't use lights or do a rehearsal run with full fins first.

On the one hand impressive story, mysterious ocean, crossing the boundaries, on the other a story about people who are fixing something in themselves by pushing and pushing. Alessia, in my view, comes across as quite selfish, having anger problems and only functioning on the edge of high risk. Not a likable character, of course that doesn’t diminish her perseverance and everything she accomplished. Yet there is something unhealthy in this high-risk sports. The Russian diver was so admired, won what could’ve been won and for what.. for the sad, yet very predictable end. If you keep pushing against nature, it’s only a matter of time when you run out of luck

This movie needs to be seen on a big screen. It's intense!
Just finished watching, chiming in on the accolades already posted. July 22, 2017 was my 28th birthday and I vaguely remember reading something about this incident in a rather sub-category news section online the next day. But then to stumble upon a docu on that exact topic 6 years later... Anyway, a real tear jerker. I didn't understand why just on *that* day they were doing the Dahab Hole he decided to deviate from the plan by mere 20 seconds, but sometimes that's just what the margin between life and death can be, 30 seconds. Seeing Alessia paddling the wrong way in disorientation, Stephen jeeting after her and Kristina Vackovas muffled screams from her mouthpiece gave me chills. I feel so sorry for all of them, and there isn't really anything consolate to say to how it all came about, but judging from this film, Stephen lived his yet so short life to the fullest.
"The Big Blue" is one of my favourite films, really fascinating sport, nice to see more media on freediving, looking forward to checking it out.

Heart-stopping! Gut wrenching! Emotional! What a superb NETFLIX release. From the opening scenes, through some of the most tense moments we have ever experienced if a film and down to the bitter end, we were totally engrossed in this story. The filming, both above and below the water surface is absolutely stunning, the interview inserts perfectly timed and the acting, of which there is none, makes this more of a top class movie than a docu. As someone who had little to no knowledge about the extreme sport of free diving prior to watching ‘The Deepest Breath’, we came out the other end with a very good idea as to what these athletes put in and also risk to become the best of the best.

One of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Gotta give credit to Netflix. On the subject of the docu itself, Alessia really did herself no favours. She comes across as something of a fanatic determined to break world records by all means. Yes, extreme sports like this will always attract extreme personalities but the fact she didnt retire immediately after her own boyfriend gave his life to save her speaks volumes about the woman. When Stephen himself achieved his national record as a freediver, he knew his limits, quit and became dedicated to helping others in the sport. Alessia though continued on trying to smash records. The only person i'm happy for is her father who himself was obviously put through great suffering from the extremes pursued by his daughter. He's a top man.

Yet this kind of personality doesn't know what is enough and wenn to quit, especially when they start to age and when they need to addopt them self to a smaller limit of a body than the one they got used to it. Man I can’t wait for this!! This looks awesome and the music is SO good for the trailer!
Wow. They turned a movie about that submarine around real quick!
Alexey called what happened to him 'an accident', but it wasn't an accident, he did what he did on purpose, so if you are free diving, that isn't any kind of accident, you are willingly doing this, so if you die, or get lung damage, it's all on you. This is an extreme sport, and sometimes it ends badly.
I love this stuff!! These are what make netflix great.
Weird sport where people are regularly blacking out to prove how long they can hold their breath.

I shed a tear for 20 straight minutes. It built up the anticipation of what I knew was coming then hit me like a truck. An amazing documentary that i`m recommending to as many as I can.
Netflix knows very well how to cashout the situation
The timing couldn't have been any better!
Man imagine being able to do this❤

It's possible. Just not an easy thing to those depths.
I watched this last night and man what a great documentary/film. So sad what happened to Steven. So sad. Its true what she said when she said he was a hero to the end. That kid was a dedicated hero. Its shocking the amount of commitment that is needed to pursue this type of sport. The line between catastrophe and success is that thin its a wonder anyone does it at all. A lot of people don't know this but after a while of actually sinking below the waves you hit a free fall where you will continue unaided to fall all the way to the sea floor, you sink like a stone after a very short while of falling. I've fealt this myself when I've submerged myself in deep pools. If you push yourself down but let your body go limp you can feel it take hold as you start to glide to the floor of the pool. Now imagine that pool is 500 metres deep or 1000 metres deep, I can honestly say the thought of it is scary to me. I can honestly see both sides of it tbh the freedom side of it and the scary side of it. I still would not wanna pursue it though.
