Luckily for me I've loved collecting physical media (CDs, VHS, books, computer games boxed and CD/disk) since long before digital took over. When we inevitably get hit by an EMP and we all go back to the monkey/bone from 2001 A Space Odyssey, people can come to my place to make copies of all my CDs! :-D

Bear in mind that Best Buy also suffered from the same thing that many other stores dealt with - rabid shoplifting by wannabe gang bangers. BB also got rid of stuff that wasn't exactly movie oriented. Next stop - closing most if not all of BB stores.

i'll never give up on buying physical media - I'd give up streaming tomorrow to be honest. I always had a soft spot for Broadcast News and was delighted when I was finally able to import the Criterion bluray and get to see a whole scene that had been cut - it was a relevation knowing this had actually been shot albeit never used.

The most nostalgic DVD menu for me is Wall-E, I watched the movie 3 times in a day when sick as a kid and still remember the sound of his goggles shifting around as you idled. Sadly 2/3 of the copies of the movie I have seem to be messed up in some way but the case had a cool design so I kept them. Great video!

Lord of The Rings trilogy, extented dvd releases... after you watched the one of those fantastic movies, you could watch all the amazing mini documents and interviews 🥰 several discs full of quality extra material, all those together were like another fantastic movie itself! ...if fysical media dies , shhht, no more wonders like that to fans anymore

i’m so happy i started my collection a couple years ago, and now that it’s becoming more and more of a rare hobby i feel even more proud that people are starting to realize that it’s such an important thing for us cinephiles to show our love for film.

Wayne’s World still has one of the coolest dvd menus with it being a tv channel guide where if you click on one of the programs that isn’t the settings, it’ll play a clip from that particular show/movie.

I don't stream anything. When they stop making physical media, I'll quit watching new movies. I have thousands of discs, I'm set, I don't really need whatever they're streaming, anyway. But I still buy lots of physical discs, so they'll definitely be losing money from people like me if they drop 'em.

I used to go to walmart and look through the $5 bargain bin of dvds, now those bins are gone and replaced with the $7.75 bargain bin, occaisionaly there would be a release i would buy on release day for $17-19 for the dvd, now new dvds are generally $22-25 and blurays that used to be $20 are now $28-30. its not the consumers fault, the demand is still there, its just with inflation people have to put thier needs first before wants and needs are taking more of thier money. in my area a beefy 5 layer burrrito from taco bell used to be $1.89 up until sometime near the end of 2019, when it went up to $2.09, now they are $3.99, meanwhile minimum wage is still $7.25😡

I got a movie and dvd player for christmas and im sad best buy is removing physical media from stores.

I wanted to pick up Avatar: The Way of Water before Christmas and I was surprised to find out that it had been DELETED?!

I can't think of a particular favorite at this time, maybe Somewhere in Time. Either way, I have been collecting physical media for decades. First vinyl in the 60's on up but for movies, it started off with VHS. I only have a few tapes left but what I do have a lot of are Laser Discs and CED discs. My current DVD/Blu-ray collection is growing by leaps and bounds. We got hit by Hurricane Maria and we were off the electrical grid for just over six months. No Internet for four months and Dish Network was down for a few weeks. We had three generators so what we basically did was watch DVD's and in particular the entire boxed set of Battlestar Galactica (2000). Physical media saved us.

Best Buy will be out of business because of this. 🤷‍♀️🤔🤦‍♀️

Not even close. They have loads of real world data showing that this aspect of their sales are easy to lose. They're making the vast majority of their money on other area's sales like electronics and all else they stock. I'm not a fan of their decision but the math for them is crystal clear, otherwise they wouldn't be doing this.

In my town I can get DVDs for $1 - $2. Some places are like buy 8 DVDs or BRs get 3 free.

I feel like part of the blame should be put onto the continued sale of DVD's while other formats like Blu-Ray and 4K were coming out. Some people don't even know that Blu-ray is meant to be higher quality than DVD, so people just thought "i can buy a DVD or stream it in higher quality" and abandoned physical media.

I think it's less about the DVD being available but that Bluray and 4k Ultra Bluray players are uncommon and very expensive. When Blurays were relatively new in 2008-2011, the Bluray players were widely available at low prices. I think I got one for $45. There aren't good 4k players around for $100. They cost like $160 to $250, which is more money than a lot of people are willing to pay, causing people to just keep playing DVDs because they already have one and are still cheap. The forgotten middle child, bluray players are about $90 and hard to find. Normally prices go down, not up. My bluray player broke about a year after I bought it, when I moved, and I never replaced it because I just watched it on my PC. However, movie studios don't want you to get and watch 4k movies. They forced manufacturers of Bluray readers and writers that go into computers to force firmware on them, that won't even read 4k UHD discs. They only want you to stream it, and only on the TV or streaming stick, not a PC. I broke down and bought a standalone 4k UHD Bluray player, so I could watch them in Dolby Vision. On my computer, I did alter the firmware to an older version that allows 4k discs to be read and backed up using my BDRW drive. The drives we buy for our computers, shouldn't have to be altered to use 4k discs, but Hollywood doesn't want that. A few years ago I bought PowerDVD 19 Ultra and use it to play 4k movies. It plays 4k mkv files excellently but only in HDR, not Dolby Vision. I would consider upgrading but newer versions didn't seem to work with DV either, so no reason to. Hollywood is trying to kill physical media by using playback restrictions, limiting what region a bluray can play in and trying to make 4k discs unusable on computers. They know if they made it easier to use, physical media would be more popular, but they choose not to. I like the option of watching a movie on a streaming service or by playing a disc or watching on my computer. If you choose streaming only, you're playing into their hands and are subject to content being removed at any time at the streaming companies discretion. You're subject to them altering and censoring content, without even disclosing that they changed it. Protect yourself and get physical media, or at least archive to storage, so it won't be taken from you.

There's ALWAYS been a decline in physical media, depending on the particular decade. Back in the 80's and early 90's, BlockBuster ruled the rental market. And with the success of rentals, a LOT of smaller video rental stores popped up. Hell, even convenient stores and mini marts were renting videos. So, sales of VHS slightly dropped. And now, in this generation, we have Netflix, which is basically the BlockBuster of the modern world. And sho 'nuff, other streaming services popped up in droves!! Sound familiar?? Keep in mind that it doesn't help when these movie studios release a DVD or Blu-Ray with LOUSY picture quality!! Who the hell wants to pay money for an inferior copy?!?! I remember seeing the original Ghostbusters movie on Blu-Ray, and it looked like SHIT!! It was as if they used a third generation copy of the film and dupped it on disc!! Even 4K can suffer from bad transfers. Have you seen "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles"?? It looks WORSE than the Blu-Ray version!!! I still buy physical discs, but damn, it's getting harder to find space for it all!!

Make me feel old... favorite DVD growing up... I remember when DVD was new. I didn't get a DVD player until 2003. I bought it to play Standing in the Shadows of Motown which came with the Temptations mini-series. I also bought the first boxsets of the Simpsons and Family Guy. I like owning my music and movies. Streaming can take things away at any time and they don't have things like liner notes or extras.

Yep the first DVD I purchased was the Lord of the rings the fellowship of the ring. I was already 20 or late teens. I grew up with with VHS.

We all bought into the lies of streaming. Now, all the movies you're looking for are trapped on yet another streaming service with endless commercial interruptions if you can even find them.

Definitely my favourite was The Simpson's season 2. I really liked how you had to press play and the heads would spin around the screen all scrambled up between characters

My sadness from the decline of physical media is due to the fact that you can't get as good a quality from streaming due to bitrates being capped so save bandwidth and all streaming devices and smart TVs output streaming at 30i rather than a proper 24fps refresh rate that you can get from bluray players with the right TV or projector. It's all going in the direction of film becoming something to be consumed as 'content' rather than art.

Best Buy has been in decline for years now. So them discontinuing physical media is a last ditch attempt to stay afloat. It def doesn't help the physical media cause.

Good video. Unfortunately the BB employee was uninformed the company as a whole is stopping physical media movies both stores and online. Many boutique labels have been mostly online based for years now though so much of the hobby has been online ordering already. Personally I think it’s all fine. It’s a change for sure, but physical media isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

There isn't much reason to go to Best Buy anymore because of this. I just order it from Amazon if it's not large or expensive.

physical media is more valuable than digital media so thats why the physical dvds are more expensive. now if the dvds didnt go out of print then they would be cheaper to buy

They're priced high because Disney is greedy. I want the 4k Avatar Collectors edition but I'm not paying $50 for it. When it drops under $40, I'll likely get it. Those series have already gone on sale, after a couple of months. They started out overpriced. For what they're charging, they should have included more than one season. Prey was a great movie but $42 for the steelbook. Too much for me to pick up. As for the series they put out on physical, I liked Mandalorian Season 1, but that's about it. I don't have Disney's streaming service either. They've oversaturated the Star Wars and Marvel brands by a long shot. Like many others, I have super-hero fatigue.
