The Death of Minerva Mink

Ойын-сауық

The original Animaniacs didn't have a perfect track record. One of the very few blemishes it had was the time where it had to remove one of its characters from any prominent role in the show. This is her story.

    Mink was definitely one of those *awakening* characters that "activated" something with some viewers. She joins the same club as Lola Bunny, Sally Acorn, Rouge the Bat, and half of Disney.

    Almost every episode had transformations, costume changes, and bondage of some sort. I don't know if it was intentional or not as it was all standard cartoon transformations and bondage is super common in spy fiction. None of the creators admitted to their kinks in any interviews, and given how tv is collaborative, it's likely different eoisodes had different writers so it's hard to know what was or wasn't considered to be sexy. I think some parts were intended to be sexy (costume changes and shots of the girls butts), but the transformations probably weren't as every transformation is standard in fiction. I think it just gets labeled as fetish fuel as it's women in latex suits undergoing transformations versus if it's superman in the silver age. Overall I feel it unintentionally shaped the kinks of an entire generation.

    The thing is, that despite 'oversexualizing characters', both Minerva and Hello Nurse were intelligent, and knew how to use their beauty to grab other character's attention. Sure, Minerva cared mostly for looks, and is shallow, but outsmarts the dog hunting her at least several times in oned of the two episodes! Hello Nurse KNOWS she's beautiful, but doesn't care to use the same ploy as Minerva. She speaks a few languages, is fashionable, has won mutiple awards in science, ca pable of solving complex mathematics and when she's not in Animaniacs, she volunteers her free time at the zoo caring for animals! I'm sad that Hello Nurse didn't appear in the new series, despite the fact that she herself stated in the movie, 'Wakko's Wish', that she'd be acknowledged for her mind, not her body! Plus, it would've been nice to see Minerva Mink and Walter Wolf's friendship dynamic change into something better, like Minerva realizing that looks, aren't everything!

    It still disappoints me that Minerva wasn't one of the characters in that movie to get a happy ending. It would've been nice for Walter to have appeared in that movie, found some kind of success in the end, and ultimately won her heart as well.

    Hello Nurse was the perfect human and minerva was better than a human you can really see her dominating men in the episodes. i still wish there was more stuff with them but i get why they pushed them to the side it was too risky the parents and investors where not going to tolerate this even i think it was a bad idea in retrospective. there should be characters like them in a more mature Simpsons like cartoon.

    Minerva Mink's "unforgivable sin" was that she was a main character of her shorts. Other "sex appeal" female characters and scenes were safe because they were minor characters or just present for a quick joke. Other characters could safely deliver similar or even stronger innuendos because those innuendos were brief gags that were minor elements of the shorts and the characters. It was Minerva Mink's role as a main character that was killed; her status was reduced to the "acceptable" role as a minor/background character that could briefly show up for jokes in others' stories.

    I think they took it just a little too far, but I think otherwise, she isn’t a bad character to have on the show. Kids don’t see characters like that and think too themselves,” Oh she’s sexy,” but rather, just see her as another Animaniac. I think the trick to having a solid character like this is to balance the “sexy” jokes with other traits as well. In this case, they put too much emphasis on her being attractive and not much else to make her feel dynamic and likable

  • @PlanetZoidstar

    @PlanetZoidstar

    Жыл бұрын

    To be fair, alot of the Animaniacs aren't written to be likable. The Warner's whole schtick is they torment and harass innocent bystanders for their own amusement. Slappy Squirrel is an old curmudgeon who is a functional sociopath. The Brain wants to take over the world. Chicken Boo is just a chicken who pretends he's not. The Hip Hippos are fat and hedonistic. Mindy exists to make Button's life miserable. Pesto constantly attacks Squit over perceived slights. Katie Kaboom explodes violent or becomes a raging hormone monster. The Animaniacs all have strong personalities, but few of them are written to be symapthetic characters. Generally they are pitted against even less sympathetic antagonists to make you root for the lesser evil.

    I had a potential cartoon idea for minerva. Perhaps she attempts to seduce someone she wants to get something from (money, food, dress, luxury item, etc.), but the man she attempts to seduce doesn't fall for her. Maybe he's gay, or isn't into her in particular (he's into redheads, brunettes, chubby women, muscular women, older women, etc.) and has to use her wits to get what she wants. It would be interesting to see what she does to get somethibg when her looks fail and how she feels when a man isn't into her.

    For Rita and Runt, the reason I heard was Rita was voiced by Bernadette Peters, a Broadway legend and she was an expensive hire to maintain. The other rumor is that runt mocked people with mental disabilities. The reason most likely to be true was Bernadette Peters though. It’s the reason you hardly see A list stars do voice work for tv shows and video games. The A list Star may want a big pay check, but doing voices for video games and tv shows doesn’t bring in a huge paycheck.

    I'm a woman and I also think Minerva is pretty entertaining. She's probably not somebody I'd get along with if she were real, but she also ended up getting hoisted by her own petard in the conclusion of her two shorts, so it isn't like she ever "won" or got away with her behavior. ETA: Well, "Moon Over Minerva" wasn't an unhappy ending for her, but still, it isn't like the show ever said her behavior was fine or anything. I dunno, I always viewed her as being like a Kelly or Peg Bundy type (money-grubbing, shallow, distracted by anything with big muscles and good hair 😄). It surprised me to see how polarizing she is. Every single female character doesn't need to be a role model or upstanding citizen. Sometimes I just wanna laugh, y'know? And yeah, I like her design too.

  • @PlanetZoidstar
    @PlanetZoidstar Жыл бұрын

    I think the writers' initial goal was Minerva was to make her a call back to the Tex Avery classic cartoons, which had VERY sexually explicit gags (like Red Hot Riding Hood and the Wolf), and to see how far the censors would let them go with her. But the censors got scared and demanded her character be cut back significantly. Had they not, I imagine the writers would have fleshed Minerva out more. On the surface she looks like a 1-note sex joke, but there's more going on with Minerva under the good. It's heavily implied she's lonely and doesn't like being hit on, but at the same time she herself is quite shallow, easily swayed by attractive guys. She only really got 2 shorts so there wasn't much chance for her character to be explored or fleshed out, much as characters in Animaniacs got at least.

She doesn't connect with me as I don't find her sexy. That's a problem Ms. Fanservice characters run into with certain viewers, not everyone thinks they're sexy and they may not be fond of them if they aren't sexually into them. Like how gay men/straight women can feel towards someone like minerva mink or hello nurse. They may find them one note and boring because they won't find them sexy. Kids have more sexual awareness then we adults seem to realize or remember about when we were kids. Kids did get a lot of the sexual endinuendo jokes a bit more than we expect and learned to relate particular features and actions to attractive sexual traits did have an influence. While they could have done more and better with Minerva on the show. I think sex appeal was just a low bar to keep adults entertained. While the kids were not so much entertained themselves, however did get influence by the story and imagery. If the parents saw what was going on, then they may have some extra work to do.

    I also think that the character of Minerva was teaching them a lesson they would need in the future: be kind to other people regardless of their looks, treat others like you want to be treated, and that it's okay to be confident, not vain. It also was a good example of how some people would use their looks to manipulate others -- IIRC, sexy female characters were often shown in a positive light (like, the cartoon protagonist would go through hell and back just to win the hot girl's favor) or resisting the advances of protagonists. Minerva was one of the first female cartoon characters who would openly use her sex appeal for her own selfish means -- and it's extremely refreshing.

    Yea I dunno about that. I didn't understand song lyrics or most innuendo in cartoons until I rewatched them. I think some kids just don't think like that. It's part of why I think you don't need to censor much. A lot of kids just won't get it. (Still think it should he censored if it can directly hurt people/encourages hate/targeting a specific thing or people etc etc). Serious stuff.

    Once I learned what an actual mink looked like, I was like "Wow, almost none of that's in Minerva's design! If she looked more like one of those maybe I'd have found her more attractive" Minerva's design actually translates very well to a horse. It's that tail matching the "mane".

    I thought Minerva was forgettable, but that's mainly just due to the fact that she only had two feature skits in the cartoon. It did always sort of confuse me that she barely ever appeared when the show originally aired. I just remember those ongoing rumors that there were other Minerva Mink shorts completed for the show, but just left on the cutting room floor because of how risque the character was. Really interested in getting confirmation one way or the other on that.

    I think I like the way they don't make her entirely this vixen with complete control or intelligence. They give her these Masculine sort of flaws you'd only see in male character, like the way she goes absolutely bonkers over an attractive man, or even her backstory. From what I heard, growing up she was considered an ugly duckling. That's probably why she's so shallow, and harsh with her rejections.

    One thing I enjoyed about shows like Animaniacs and Tiny Toons was that their leading ladies were every bit as loony as their male counter parts. What made characters like Lola bunny from the og Space Jam so boring was that she was not only the token female but given no personality outside of that, when compared to a cast of quirky guys. Dot, Minerva, Babs Bunny, Fifi ect were all just as fun, silly, and flawed as the guys and that's what made them entertaining to watch. At least Lola's reboot characterization makes her more loony and fun to watch.

    As a kid I kinda got the whole “she’s the sex appeal character” and didn’t really think anything of it. Hell I still have my vhs of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, battered as it is. Gota say I hate this whole idea that "Women can't be sexy because that would be offensive" thing too many modern cartoons have flattened women's chests to avoid them being "Sex objects" Except for the fact that its not wrong especial when you show that women too objectify men. being attracted and attractive is natural. Women have breasts Stop pretending they don't and Im also bugged by character designs that need to also cover the arms, legs and bellies.

    Whether it was by bad luck, or inconvenient circumstances, I unfortunately never saw the "Minerva Mink" episode segments as a child when "Animaniacs" originally aired in the 90's on the "KidsWB" block of the "WB" network (when it was still around); (though I always did wonder who that light blonde haired, white furred, animal girl in a red dress was in the show's opening at that time was, as I apparently NEVER saw the episode segments that featured her as a side character, OR a background character either). Fortunately, thanks to discovering DeviantArt (yes, I know what many of y'all think of that site, but it does have its upsides), I finally discovered, and learned about Minerva Mink shortly after doing so in 2008; which naturally led me to finally finding and watching her "Animaniacs" episode segments online.

You guys are right in saying that if we could have seen more with her and wilfred wolf, that would have been very interesting. It also would have been very interesting to see what other foes they would have put her against. And how the character would have eventually evolved.

    I just finished up the first 8 eps of Animaniacs (2020 - 2023) and yep. Same issues as the last three, with okay segments here and there. But very much loved seeing Julia Brain again in that awesome segment. But besides that, nice video on Minerva Mink here. Yes, the history on her has been made very clear on what we've known about her for years and her decline from any more segments, reduced to cameos to her comics. I've had a crush on her since i was kid and was happy back in 2008 when the dvd were gonna start selling in stores that year. Getting to revisit an old show i had not seen in years and the old series still holds up. Heart was put into every ep. Unlike the reboot. Anywho, your vids on Animaniacs have been awesome so keep it up. Yes, i'll admit her character was shallow and her second segment i loved more, due to giving her some characterization. Would've loved it to see her grow as character, but such as. I didn't really care for that at the time, when all i had google eyes and drooled for her, while i'm being honest. but you've made some valid points here about her and loved it. Take you guys and have a good one! Ps. I do love Meet Minerva more for obvious reasons.

    I think it would have been funny if they brought her back for the reboot and made her a twitch streamer. That would be modern and still completely relevant to her character; a lot of comedic opportunities to be had as well. And if you wanted to make it wholesome, at the end show that she she's one of those streamers that actually has a boyfriend and it's Wilford.

    My mom was definitely one of those angry moms who wrote to the network. She HATED Minerva. But, surprisingly, didn't ban me from watching the whole series like she usually did when she caught something inappropriate. My parents liked Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain, so they didn't want to ban the show. She just told me not to watch those episodes. And surprisingly, she knew Minerva wasn't a main character and was OK with the rest of the series. The same could not be said for lots of other cartoons I wanted to watch.

    These dull as dishwater executives and censors have always been the bane of these fun concepts. Minerva Mink and Hello Nurse suffered the same fate, but even before them, characters like Janine from the real Ghostbusters back in the 80s had censors transform her from a sexy brooklynite to a ditsy nanny like motherly character. I'm not even in it for the characters sex appeal because I'm gay (yes Wilfred Wolf's transformations did it for me!) But I just liked the characters of Minerva, Hello Nurse and Janine because their sexy appeal gave them a fun character dynamic. They even had in an Animanaics comic how Hello Nurse was a secret agent and super intelligent spy who was secretly the smartest character on the show, loved this concept, and they didn't need to stop her sexy appearance to make it happen.

    One of the key problems with Mineva was that she was written as an antagonist, not a protagonist. She was shallow, self-centered and only concerned about her own whims...which was not much. There wasn't much to her except the sexuality. Maybe they should have put her in a more modern setting, having to get a job, bills and such, with a female opposite to play off of rather than just males to fawn over her. Like say, a not as "attractive" but still cute and far more rounded female that gets the attention of the "hunk" Mineva eventually loses it over, or gets the job Mineva wants by being a hard worker.

Now did I original say it to cause problems no, did child me after finding out it pissed her off keep doing it, most likely yes, I don't have much memories from that age but kids do like to annoy their parents. So if nothing else they got Mindy's mom attitude right lol.
