Possibly. Had David remained King, the pressure to have a child and heir of his own would have been enormous. It's very likely the crown would never have gone to his brother, then to Elizabeth, and eventually on down to Charles.

At his death, Edward was not King Edward VIII, he was the Duke of Windsor. He lost the title of king when he abdicated. Being a royal prince from birth, he remained a royal prince after he abdicated. This meant he was titled His Royal Highness, the Duke of Windsor.

While in college in early 1941 (U of Miami Florida), my mother was working alone in the Dean of Women's office when in walked the Duke of Windsor accompanied by an RAF lieutenant. He was there to give an address to the many RAF students and was making the rounds to fill the lecture hall. She said they had a pleasant chat. Too bad selfies weren't a thing back then!

according to the laws of succession of the British monarchy, there are only two ways a new monarch inherits his/her new title, nl, upon the death of the reigning monarch; and being named the successor upon the abdication of the reigning monarch. The coronation ceremony is just a formality to introduce the new monarch to the public, plus having a celebration (like a coronation) upon the death of an important figure is considered inappropriate.

Remember this was written when Camilla was still unmarried and Charles as well. If Charles had become King at this time he probably would have faced the same predicament as his great uncle. Still its also not the same because at this point in the series at least Camilla was still unmarried and the only blemish she had was that she had a colorful past.

This is completely false. Wallis wasn't with him when he died. He died in Paris with his nurse by his side and Wallis treated him like dirt through the latter half of his marriage to her. She acted like she detested him and flaunted her other relationships with her lovers in his face and in public. She was a completely horrid woman who despised him in the end although he truly loved her- in his broken twisted co-dependent way. Also we now know that this Duke of Windsor fed classified information to the Nazi's and tipped them off on important matters like when a place crashed with senior Nazi military officials in it and the plans for the invasion of France was in there. Edward let the Nazi's know so they they could change the plans and take Paris and all of France. Also Edward encouraged the Nazi's to keep bombing the crap out of Britain because British resolve was weakening and they would soon surrender. Edward was a traitor to his country and got much better than he deserved. Wallace was ultimate his greatest punishment and I'd say, yeah, that was a good punishment. Charles can be such an idiot. But we all know that.

But we know this entire scene was fiction - Charles’ letter to his uncle, Wallis’ being with Edward VIII at this death, etc. - so your point really isn’t valid. You’re basing your opinion of Charles on a fiction. Charles and Camilla have done a good job thus far.

Sheesh Lesley, rather all-knowing and opinionated in hindsight, eh? I’m sure you need forgiving just as much as the next man, including the Duke of Windsor, King Charles III, and any other mortal soul who has walked this Earth. We are all frail, faulted and misunderstood mortal beings standing on trial in the gallows of hindsight, standing on the judgement of others who feel they would play this game of life a heck of a lot better than you; perhaps your day hasn’t come, but soon we will ask for the same forgiveness we refused to give others. Perhaps stepping off the moral high horse and join the rest of the human race?

Both Alex Jennings and Derek Jacobi are taller than Edward VIII. In fact Alex Jennings is a lot taller. Alex is 6’2 while the Duke of Windsor was only 5’7. That’s a good 5-6 inches taller. And Derek is said to be 5’10, he looks a lot shorter here, but then again he’s a older man now he may have shrunk to 5’7 which means he’d be closer to the real David’s height.

Difference is Edward wasn't having an affair. Would He have made a good king? We'll never know. Charles sadly misinterpreted Edward's circumstances as his own. And now Charles is making a mockery of the crown: being demanding of his staff and looking down on others.

Yes, while Prince of Wales and Edward VIII, the future Duke of Windsor WAS having an affair with the still-married Wallis Warfield Simpson for some years and even tried to use his position as king to push through the legal divorce from her 2nd husband Ernest Simpson. Of course, it needs to be said that Mr. Simpson did nothing to resist the divorce and soon after it was final would marry his 3rd wife [Wallis's onetime bestie].

Would he have made a good king? Absolutely not! Tommy Lascelles resigned as his private secretary in 1929 because Edward spent a tour of Africa sleeping with the wives of public officials. Lascelles also let it be known to the Canadian Prime Minister that he regarded Edward as unfit to be king. Strong words from somebody who served as the Royal family's faithful guard dog for nearly 20 years. IMO, Edward should have been hanged after WW2. He did after all encourage the Nazis to bomb his own people and leaked the plans for the defence of France to them. The man was a traitor and an utter disgrace. As for Charles's affair, perhaps that wouldn't of happened if Diana hadn't started screwing her bodyguard first who as it happens was a married man. A detail which for some reason the makers of the Crown deliberately ignored.

It's quite well documented that she was indifferent to him and had a number of affairs. She had an affair with Jimmy Donahue, the bisexual heir to the Woolworth fortune. When someone asked him what it was like he replied, 'Like sleeping with a very old sailor.' His nurse noted that in his last three weeks of life she barely visited him and appeared contemptuous of him. Even in the thirties, when she and Edward were having their affair, she was sleeping with a used car salesman called Guy Trundle and the German ambassador to whom she was passing information that she saw when he was going through the work in his red boxes. That was the reason why he was secretly denied access to anything sensitive.
