I also had to temp block a ton of people to get a clear pic because everyone was jumping around us.

    My favourite one was The Endless Forest. You couldn't actually do anything in the game, and it was notorious for the dev team's decision to restrict all communication between players to emotes - absolutely no chat function. You played as a fawn that, after about a month of irl time, would age into a stag. You couldn't customise your stag unless you managed to convince another player to use forest magic on you for an effect- difficult when you can't chat, but not impossible. It was so relaxing and quite lovely to look at. The dev team was massively into hands-on development: they'd host events on the server where their avatars (in-game Gods) would make incredible magic happen that was never seen otherwise. I think I remember a concert happening once in game. It was kinda more of an art piece than an MMORPG. From what I remember, it actually was featured in a few art galleries at its height.

    I was going to bring up Endless Forest. I loved that game so much. It was such a beautiful game and weirdly fun in a rp aspect considering you couldn't use words. I can remember the god events where to two deer gods would bring in the seasons or something?

  • @ashentoast

    @ashentoast

    2 жыл бұрын

    Oh! It's one of my favourites as well and I still have my accounts from it! I was present for one of those "Abiogenesis" events years ago, where the two devs would move the twin statues and do all sorts of wacky effects that lagged my little crappy computer or give players special skins. I was perhaps too young and dumb to understand the more artsy side of it, but there was something so unique and captivating about the concept of the "game" that it made me stick around for several years. The fact that players made up an entire way of communication based on the limited set of gestures or the fact that if you weren't "in the know" about the RP community, interactions with others felt so ephemeral and strange... The forest has sort of a liminal feel to it, specially if offline or during special events. I still have dreams about the game and remember it fondly.

    Here is a short story about how I became -kinda- infamous on FeralHeart: So I was somewhere around 10-12 years old. I just started playing FeralHeart and had discovered their map maker. I made a few maps for my friends to enjoy including one with giant butterflies that had portals on them. (we roleplayed that they would fly you over to next map) The issue was the butterfly model couldn't be placed low enough on the ground to be reached without wings without it clipping through. So I added collision boxes to the tree model that came with the game so players could easily climb on them and jump over to the butterfly. Little did I know that doing so would actually affect models on the official maps. Needless to say I abused this new superpower alot and climbed onto the parts of the said tree model where you usually could not. I of course shared my methods with everyone who asked and shortly after I was not the only one doing this. Few days later I was contacted by mod through chat, but I did not know how to respond to them as they were ignoring (or not seeing) messages I sent to regular chat and I did not know which channel to use to speak to them. The got angry, accused me of "hacking the game" and I got permanently banned from the forums and had a pretty long ban from the game. I think I remain banned on the forums to this day. And that is a story of how a little child hacked FeralHeart and caused a lot of trouble. In all fairness, if your game can be hacked by a 10 yo with 0 coding skills, you deserve it.

Why I was allowed to be staff when I was 16 now perplexes me as a now 26 year old, but that was about standard for the userbase with the oldest being maybe early 20s. No one EVER told me that Superfluous, someone I was friends with for years and talked to often, was replaced by another user after their disappearance and I had to find all of that out in 2020. The lack of communication and coordination in the team is still wild to think about. It's actually very upsetting looking back on all of this and feel retroactively hurt lmfaooo early internet was buckwild. Anyway Impressive Title was gr8 and I miss the good times. Thank you for sharing

    i was part of the original friend group that KovuLKD created IT for, as well as a concept artist on aro'kai. honestly i thought these games and their absolutely wild history was going to disappear completely, so it's nice to see a solid compilation. makes me feel like it really did happen and i wasn't crazy LMAO. fun vid, thanks for putting it together! some wacky tidbits that weren't in here since it concerned specific people (me lol), but might be fun for anyone interested: - kovuLKD had me and a friend create a custom item that was meant as a gift for just us two. he later leaked it on IT. the absolute height of drama for me as a little kid LOL - somewhere in the middle of the superfeesh bait-and-switch, me and my friend (same as above) were fired from concept artist positions on aro'kai on account of being "too bossy." we were both stumped as superfeesh previously had been very excited whenever we balled ideas, and now was extremely hostile. we found out much later that they were in fact not feesh. - there definitely was an ongoing rivalry between arokai and FH LMAO. you can see remnants of it in the glowing crystals that were added into FH later. they were a concept i coined for arokai, and were to be plot important. somebody who was reading the mod forums was definitely leaking things - not really wack but it was a cool older feature: you used to be able to tame pets on IT. the fanciest one was a manta ray which you could only get by defeating a giant manta ray boss who spawned in a designated cave. you needed several people to take it down, or else its health would refill. was always bummed they removed this!

    I'm very excited for FH unleashed. I feel like a 13 year old girl again. At a time when I had very little good friends, I spent hours on FH either chatting or role-playing lion prides, wolf packs, warrior cats, etc. My best friends at the time were people I met on FH. Even if it isn't the same, I hope I can get some of that same excitement even now as a 21 year old. Hearing the music again gave me warm memories 💓

    That made me remember a funny story about Impressive title, lol. Back in the day, I was having tons of friends there and i think we were hanging out for like... 2 years, I guess. So there was a girl, who started talking to me and basically being sticky for like 1 year. I never told anyone about my age or that I was a girl, because nobody really asked. Turned out she was in love with me and wanted to meet me so badly, but then suddenly disappeared for a while, because one of our mutual friends told her I was actually a girl. Some days later she came back texting me that she wanted to have a family with me and that I was awesome and she loved me and etc, but couldn't be with me because I was a girl. The only thing I said was "It doesn't bother me to be with a girl". She answered "O.O" then forever disappeared and never was online since xD If that particular person reading this, I'm sorreh for your broken heart back then. XDD Peace.

    These remind me a bit of a really simple deer game I used to play called Endless Forest. The biggest flaw of EF was that there was no means of chat or communication, so it got boring really fast. All you could do is follow other deer, dance with them, and "moo" at them.

  • @TrytheGreenOne

    My friend was a Mod for Arokai and got me in to briefly help out with the concept art. She mentioned there was a lot of pressure with the mods choosing the direction the game was going with superfeesh just going along. One person was putting a lot of pressure onto the dragon race being too OP (literal dragons? unbalanced) and their answer was to simply make the dragons all very ugly so less people would pick them, so the mod had been drawing a lot of aesthetically unpleasing bald swamp-thing type dragons. I thought it was poor game design to intentionally make a product uglier. I submitted art for a slender wyvern race instead, so it was same number of limbs and not the size of a house. The artwork was shooed into the arokai DA gallery and my friend tried to pull for it. But the other mod was closer to superfeesh, this is like some weird royal advisor stuff. The likes racked up in DA and we tried to let that speak a little but it didn't go anywhere. I wasn't directly involved in the project I just sat in on a few meets, but from what little I heard and what my friend told me, it was extremely dense with politics. My friend was actually good at playing it, but I was a very simple person and was not. The attitude of the development and moderation community was so stressful. I think that is common for indie games, but I cannot stand how it mirrors a royal court sometimes, and like quest to get closer to superfeesh I watched this vid to see what happened to all of it afterwards. xD I remember playing Impressive Title and hearing of Feral Heart. The rest are a surprise. I'm sad to hear none of the games took off. I do think there is a big empty void where a social MMO could comfortably sit, just a good one hasn't been made yet. My favorite other game to haunt was The Endless Forest, which came very close in spirit and was a finished effort but is also dogged by terribly AFK developers who don't see the value of what they got, TEF being their biggest playerbase success, but eschewed for their more short-lived concept pieces that only manage to look good on headlines as provacatieur art games and then the trail ends

  • @ultramegachicken5185
    @ultramegachicken51853 жыл бұрын

    This video gave me major nostalgia feels for Furcadia. It's a bit older, from the late 90's rather than the 2000's, isometric rather than 3D. The main draw, and the place where most people played, were player-made maps called Dreams that were fully customizable including the ability to script objects and import your own assets. There was no 'gameplay' really, it was pure roleplay. People designed Dreams with beautiful, elaborate maps and self-contained roleplay continuities that had continuous storylines for years. The subject matter people chose to roleplay wasn't always your usual furry stuff either, it was very creative and engaging. Unlike the ones you covered this had a semi-professional development team. In my admittedly fuzzy memory it was still going strong with many active continuities all the way up to the mid 2010s. It's kinda of a sad husk of itself now, tons of gorgeous Dream maps with absolutely nobody in them, the only active area left being the 'adults only' zone where people go to text hump. I don't know if any one particular thing did it in - people grew up and moved on, better options appeared, the game itself failed to change and evolve from it's late 90's origins, and a big promised revamp went on for a long time but didn't deliver much. It was a big part of my online life for some 15-odd years (I think). Lots of great and not-so-great memories, along with friendships and relationships that will outlast it.

The wolf customization is realistic to the population portrayed, you need to mark and keep territory, hunt prey, find a mate, and protect your offspring from predators and rival wolves. But there is an online multiplayer feature too, and many players use it for roleplaying.

    God I'm so glad you covered this. I've always felt crazy when I tried to talk about this with people. Feralheart was beloved to me for so long. After 1.17 everyone just seemed to drop like flies. I remember the days of "marshmallow" players and the endless line of buttswingers. I do not know if this was mentioned in the video. (as I am stil currently watching) however the source code for FH was indeed found (although years later, perhaps sometime after the 1.17 update) and the team does have it to my knowledge. As for what is being done with it? I'm not too sure. I had (kinda)left the community early 2021 and haven't visited it's forms since then. As for Ceral Soup, the game is still thriving and even has a discord and website. The steam download has been fixed to my knowledge and the game is being "updated" (slowly) Update: There is another FH rendition called Feral Heart Unleashed (It uses Kovu's original source code, it is not being developed by anyone from FH itself (that I'm aware of)). They have their own discord and patreon. Since it is still being developed- only patreons have access to playing it. They do, however, have a server called Feral Heart Neighborhood that is basically pre 1.17 update version of FH. Old maps, old everything (even buttswing!!). However it will be shut down once FHU is released to the public UPDATE 2: FHU IS NOW OUT!

    hey, former feralheart content creator here. you did a very impressive job of researching and compiling a broad sense of the wonderful "furry mmo" timeline. breaking it down to a generalized level that's easy to understand. as someone who unfortunately was a member of three out of the four of these communities for almost a decade, there's a small bit of misinformation. 1. FeralHeart was made by KovuLKD along with a few other developers(Slycan, Nala91 to name a few). While he primarily worked with the code, from my understanding the modellers and texture artists were separate people. However as he had the main source code - that's what they had to work with. 2. The source code did 'disappear' with KovuLKD, however a 'corrupted' version of it was kept with Razmirz the server host. Since at least a portion of it was required to keep the game running. I don't believe he could exactly read the code(From what I've been told it's a bit nutty, even for something on Ogre engine), much less how to 'fix' it. The Staff team & Raz had it in their pocket for a while, although public knowledge of them even having it vanished sometime in 2013. I know it was mentioned that Raz had it, but apart from that no one said anything and perpetuated that it was nonsense. 3. There was an update to FeralHeart. A few, actually. Within the last 3-4 years it has received updates regarding the map as well as a few customization options. However they were done without the source code, so while bugs remained at least there was new 'content'. Most of it was unpopular with the community for a variety of reasons, but I could personally go on for hours about that. Oh wait, I have. Oops. You actually showed game footage of one of the most recent versions of the game - not the original from 2012 where KovuLKD vanished. Most definitely not the one where a lot of these posts were made/revolved around. There are much older videos on KZread that show what it used to look like - and there's actually a 'throwback' fan-made version of FeralHeart ran by Feral Neighbourhood that restores the game to that version. They have a discord and use the 'FeralHeart Unleashed' website to keep that version of the game going. 4. CeralSoup did allegedly have ties to a security hack to the FeralHeart server itself - granting themselves basically admin accounts and being able to edit the game code on the fly. It behaved similarly to how the Impressive Title 'hacks' were done - editing models and making them look funny. It was also more than the call-out blog you mentioned -- As I was unfortunately part of the FeralHeart blogger scene. It took that entire community by storm and might have SOME credibility behind it. But that's drama from five goddamn years ago so even if it was, it doesn't matter. 5. The Feral Tales game is back up. I think. 6. The Aro'Kai 'was that the real superfeesh' thing was something perpetuated by Razmirz at some point. At some point I was on acquaintance terms with Kahara, but have never really heard much on that story apart from what you already said. All I can recall is that I believe both sides were incorrect on who it was, or the reasons for them being there. that's about all i can conjure up at the moment. you documented the fall of IT fairly well from my understanding, lmfao. in all honesty that was the biggest red flag and worst omen for this entire saga. if it had stopped at IT, who knows what other games could've taken over the niche that FH filled.

  • @gayrurumon
    @gayrurumon3 жыл бұрын

    Gosh, I remember FeralHeart. I downloaded it at played a couple of times because a creator I followed in the Spore community had mentioned it (there's another really niche online community for you there). My most vivid memory of playing it, other that just a lot of time spent jumping around, was of the time I tried to join a bunch of other players in doing a Warriors rp. I was still pretty unfamiliar with the controls at this time, so when the group set off to convene who-knows-where in the map to start playing, I accidentally pressed the key that made my character autorun in one direction and couldn't figure out how to turn it off. My poor cat got separated from the squad and in a panic I remember asking if someone could please tell me how to stop running in the game's chat. My pleas were tragically ignored by the other roleplayers, in fact I'm pretty sure one of them even "lol'd" in response, and they all ran off and ditched me. Socially anxious teenage me was so mortified by the experience that I'm pretty sure I never logged in again after that. Looking back, I think those people were just kinda dickheads, but also it is very funny in retrospect. Despite that laughable ordeal, this video still made me weirdly nostalgic for the game. I never heard about what happened to FeralHeart. Looking back on it, I'm pretty sure I played it either right before or a little while after the update that added wings to the game, because I remember reading a post about it on the front page of the website. So all this Kovu stuff could have been happening behind the scenes at the time and I just never realised it... pardon the pun, but that's wild.

There were less people playing the game compared to a few years ago, but maybe the time I got on wasn't when the peak amount of players are usually on.

    Forgive if this is long, but I think there needs to be an explination on the IT/FH side. Raz has never been a good person, as someone that's been in the fandom/in staffs for 9+ years he's turned a blind eye to pedophillia, abuse, and many other things under his watch. He was also the reason Kovu took off from the project as Raz has a habit of manipulating and abusing those that reside in his staff, even those that were technically above him in rank. He has never been a victim here. He's gone as far as taking over accounts of/asking others their direct competitor Feral Heart Unleashed and posting very obscene images and generally trying to make the life of that staff living hell. This is a burner account as well, the people in the IT/FH community have been known for being outwardly drama-centric. I'd rather not be dragged into that (again). I'm free for people to reach out to as I'm an old dog in this community, and if anything I've learned that nothing is what it seems.

She found out I played after one of my professors showed my deviantart page in front of our classroom in a means of teaching not only I, but all my other classmates to 'not use stupid ass online usernames in your renders'. I used to play IT spinoffs (my favorite one being Sanctum of Eventide) and I would just blast my way through with almost no contact with anyone else. I just loved to sit around and wait for the rarest mobs to spawn. That, or I'd spend the whole day trying to gather specific items or skills, then tame mobs. Taming was so fun. I'd always spend most of my time gathering healing and taming skills, then slowly making my way up, taming weaker mobs for extra damage to take down stronger mobs and substitute my own. That would go until I had one of the strongest mobs available. SoE was my favorite one because it let me tame an Earthshaker, which was a giant elephant that upon attacking would cause the whole map to shake. It was so cool. Haven't seen tameable giant elephants since the server went down. :(

    i played Impressive Title religiously. it was my favorite thing to do after school and on weekends, the wild roleplays i had with people that only a 10 year old could possibly have... when the game shut down, i was totally devastated. i was really, really excited for feral heart, but by the time the game had come out, i was already past the phase. it really upset me, too, stepping into feral heart for the first time and not feeling that magic i felt with impressive title. realizing that, i had grown up just a little, and this didn't appeal to me the same way, not to mention it lacked a lot of the things i REALLY liked about impressive title (lacking the expansive maps IT had, not to mention the incredibly nifty 'world' system where you could essentially have your own private little layer of the server to roleplay on which FH could have used) out of them all i miss impressive title the most. i wonder about the kids i met there, sometimes, and i hope they're doing well. i think about the what-if, and wish i could have kept roleplaying there. and god, arokai, i haven't heard that name in ages. still as an unfortunate story now as it was back then, it would've been such a cool roleplay game haha.

    Damn, love your videos. Seams like your have such a well researched overview of the topics you handle and the choice of topics has near no parallel. Also, love your aesthetic. Was watching with a friend and they did not "appreciate" your look and this made me realize I cant be friends with that person anymore ahahahha. (im serious). Know this is a bit of a stream of consciousness, and you most likely hear this a lot, but just wanted to share the fact that i think you are making some great entertainment and it feels like you are having fun doing it too. cheers

    I remember being in the snow map "South Pole" I think it was in Feral Heart as Vivian, a white wolf with black striped legs and out of no where other "baby" Vivians of various pastel colors but exact same markings came and hung out. It was pretty hilarious. Must have been like 5 different colored Vivians. Thank y'all. I still remember you.
