The Deathguard under Nathaniel Garrow who remained loyal to the Imperium are true heroes to be celebrated. The Deathguard who followed their Primarch into damnation deserve all of the hatred and scorn that can be mustered.

I don't think good ol' Morty deserves a lot of the hate he gets. He is judged in the sense of someone of a sound mind. Kurze's and Angron's mental degradation is often discussed but Mortarion too was mentally damaged. He was tortured mentally and physically by his father who used magic to suppress the people of his home world. Then another magical father shows up looking to rule the people from Barbados again. It's stated in one of the books that Mortarion was trying to save his people from tyrannical rule and that he saw the emperor as another tyrant looking to rule over his people and that the emperor took his chance away to save his people. His he wrong? Morty definitely has an ego and wants to be a hero but he ultimately just falls back into the cycle of abuse he was raised with and experienced with them emperor. He is not justified but I don't understand that hate

And the entire reason he renamed and reformatted the Deathguard was to honour his human army who had been all but wiped out in the attack Big E goaded him into doing.

For what I've learned lorewise until now, Mortarion with time would cultivate ideas if becoming a ruthless ruler somehow similar to Kurze to bring order through force to the galaxy. And that was WAY before his fall to Nurgle's corruption. But I am probably wrong. Feel free anyone to correct me!

@Aberinkula9 I believe you are correct. I think that just showcases how he is trapped in the cycle of abuse from his first father. Just perpetuating what he experienced. When the emperor found him, I don't think the emperor showcased how he was any different and was actually implementing these tyrannical methods on a much larger scale then his first father. He wasn't ever really shown a different way I feel, until his brothers chastised his methods, but that was coming from "equals" why big poppa emps in charge for his part seemed to promote his methods further conditioning him to it. Also mortarion is a stubborn basturd

His distaste for psykers is unwarranted, and is akin to the kind of bigotry of a racist or sexist because of a single bad apple during childhood. Even if we excuse his hate for psykers, if he really cared for Barbarus he wouldn't have been so callous about the tremendous loss of life involved in turning the entire planet into a breeding ground for more Death Guard recruits. He would have instead attempted something similar to Guilliman's Ultramar where his administration would at least shield Barbarus from elements of the Emperor's law that he didn't like. Instead he became a bitter, petty, scared child and transformed into the very thing he was bigoted against. The only primarch that even comes close to that level of hypocrisy is Curze, and even then Morty still stands comfortably in first place.

Mort was the worst kind of hypocrite. Railed against Magic, yet embraced it in his own Chambers. Boasted he was the strongest, but caved in to pain at the critical moment. Damned his Sons to save his own life while simultaneously thinking he was “saving his Legion.” The DG should have turned from Mort then and saved their own fates.

I would say around 80%. Mortarion did choose to follow Horus too, which also played a significant part in their fall.

🟢💚 Glory to the Crowfather! Rotigus Rainfather's Wereshark Warriors? What power can Nurgle give to them, and what power can they give to him? (Some Nurgle warriors have a shark fin-shaped horn on their helmet or head, especially those of Gutrot Spume) Wood, the true element of Nurgle's weapons and bodies! Jaghatai Khan and White Scars as Nurgle's Legion, with poisonous wooden skeletons and thorns, bringers of the plague storm (with Rotigus Rainfather at their side). After each hunt and victory they dip the skulls in poison, in honor of Nurgle. (They symbolize the more natural side of the God of Death) There was once a Keeper of Secrets who annihilated an Eldar Craftworld by possessing a vulnerable Avatar of Khaine. How devastating would it be if he gets possessed by a Great Unclean One? A serious critique of Nurgle's forces: large, massive, plagued/poisonous bodies but more harder and less rotten. Is this logical enough? 🟢💚 I'm really curious. Imagine if instead of Loyalist Mortarion and Death Guard (except Typhon and followers of course) it was Traitor Jaghatai Khan (later with crow wings as a gift from the plagued Crowfather) and White Scars (all corrupted by the now poisonous Sorcerer Hasik Noyan-Khan) who fell to Nurgle! (An example Plague Ogors with super speed) How is their speech and fighting? And how does Rogal use the XIV Legion's abilities to defend Terra? (Here Mortarion used his psychic power to destroy the Necromancers and Necare, with his tough Librarians harshly disciplined, very different from the reckless Magnus and Thousand Sons) 💀☠️ Remove their cannibalism, leave them with bones☠️bone ash, and Mortifactors💀 become great (even as the replacement for the XIV Legion).

💚🟢 Let's imagine that Angron and Mortarion are Loyalists (according to my version), could Alpharius/Omegon be the new Daemons of Nurgle? (Example the seven-headed Plague Hydras, who live in poisonous Swamp Planets, Jungle Planets and Ocean Planets, corrupted by Rotigus Rainfather for the God of Death, the monster's immortality as a glorious symbol of the eternal Cycle of Rebirth)

🩶🤍 Loyalist Mortarion, who with discipline and determination used his psychic power to destroy the Necromancers and liberate his world, then commanding the harsh Librarians of his tough Death Guard. Traitor Typhon, who used his poisonous psychic power to corrupt his companions and escape in his plagued ship, vowing vengeance in Nurgle's name against the uncorrupted Pale King of Barbarus. Well?

Nathaniel Garro is one of the coolest characters in the entire setting. Mortarion is really one of the most immature and hypocritical characters in the setting. Typhus is an asshole.

I would say the worst written is probably Ferrus Manus, but Mortarion is definitely a close second. Speaking of Perturabo, I actually like him quite a lot.
