The Deal That DIED | The Original Hot Wheels DeLorean

#delorean #dmc12 #backtothefuture
The DCS 2023 coverage continues! So what really happened exactly? We sit down with Matt Sommer and review the history of the Original Hot Wheels DeLorean DMC-12 -- the proposed die-cast car, the deal that died, and the legacy that lives on.
Believe it or not, we ALMOST got a Hot Wheels DeLorean back in 1980. Most Hot Wheels DeLorean aficionados know what we mean -- you know, the die-cast car that was based on Prototype-1 and not the production DeLorean. Yeah that one, the one that became the... Turismo.
With an exclusive in-depth 'show and tell' examining 4 prototype examples that Mr. Sommer was generous enough to bring to DCS 2023's DeLorean Museum. And we'll just say as die-hard Hot Wheels DeLorean fans, it was a dream come true to get to play with them! Disclaimer:

Great coverage of the early history of DeLorean Hot Wheels! Of course the follow-up would be with Manson Cheung discussing the re-birth of the modern DMC-12 Hot Wheels cars. An interesting factoid about die-cast (and other types of) molds: It is easier to mill material out of them than it is to add material back in (which is done by welding in a new chunk of metal and then milling it). Material removed from a mold equates to material added to the produced part, so that explains why the changes to go from the DMC-12 Proto-1 to the Turismo are additions (hood scoop, grill, windows filled). I was lucky enough to find a Turismo at an antique store for cheap. It's in terrible shape (well-loved by some youngster), but a piece of history. I also have the modern reproduction (the new DMC-12 Hot Wheel in Turismo livery), which I think is a great callback to the early history. Thank you everyone involved in the DeLorean Hot Wheels history, then and now.
