The Deadly Return of TB in Swaziland (Disease Documentary) | Real Stories

The human stories behind the deadly infection TB
A deadly airborne disease is making a dramatic comeback in Swaziland. Passed on by a simple cough or sneeze, TB is travelling fast and now new, multi-drug resistant variants are starting to appear all over the world.
Multi-BAFTA winning film-maker Jezza Neumann creates a very intimate account of the crippling effects of MDR-TB. We witness victims from two families battling with the disease over the course of a year. We start in deep rural Swaziland near the border of South Africa. Here lives Bheki, a builder who is fanatical about football and who recently learnt that both he and his sister have MDR-TB. As time passes his sister’s condition deteriorates and Bheki starts to become increasingly depressed and suicidal.

As a nurse I only ever saw 1 case of TB, that was 40years ago, such a dreadful disease. I’m glad the little girl responded to the meds and finally her sputum cleared allowing her to leave hospital, live in the community and go to school.

Milagros Granados the last time I saw TB was 40 yrs ago, on a medical ward. My nursing career was in ENT and ORTHOPAEDIC nursing. I don’t really know about up to date treatments, I would see nurses in your local clinics or Doctors surgery and ask them. Failing that google it on your computer. Hope you find the answers to all your questions

It's heartbreaking to see children suffer through any illness when the diagnosis also means the end. Companies shouldn't show these stories without a way to donate to make these children's life a bit easier. Simple things like stuffed animals or coloring books would make them smile if only for a brief time.

At the hospitals, as an employee, it's required to get a TB TEST, every year on our birthday (to help us remember how important it is to have the test). Where they peirce your forearm with a tiny needle and "bleb" a small amount of air just enough to make a small bubble under the skin which has to go away within 48hrs otherwise you cannot work there.

It clearly states that this is a type of super strain of TB that is resistant to antibiotics due to the fact that viruses are very smart. I'm a 24 years old student in Brazil. I ignored a cough, weight loss and fever in order to dedicate to studies, when I couldn't take anymore I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with pulmonary TB. I was so scared but willing to beat this. Started the treatment 4 months ago and the treatment can be really really hard. I almost gave up on meds due to side effects. Few weeks ago I found out the bacteria is resistant to one of the drugs so probably instead of 6 months treatment I'll be in 9 to 13 months treatment. The treatment is effective, I noticed the difference, I don't cough, don't have fever, I can eat and do my activities (even tho I still struggle to take all the meds properly everyday). This video really touched me, we should talk about it and do something about it. I feel like my body will never be the same again and I don't want anyone to go through this.

Yes, GOD does exist and will deliver those who have trust in HIM. Don't believe the lie that HE causes pain and suffering. It is Satan, he is th e one who is causing all that is evil and unholy. The LORD says to trust in HIM with all our hearts and not rely on our own understanding. When we have trust in HIM, HE gives us overwhelming peace; a peace I never thought exsited. Before having a relationship with HIM I had the same thoughts, not understanding why such things happen. But, when I studied the Bible and began to have a relationship with HIM, it all came together. No one will understand HIS plans/desires for us if we don't know HIM on a personal level. Otherwise, it is just silly talk. With all that is going on no one will feel fulfilled in life unless one seems GOD. We try to mask our pain, discontentment, etc. with temporary things. But, we are never satisfied; always trying to fill a void. When the only ONE who can feel that could is a relationship with GOD through Jesus Christ. I pray for anyone who reads this, to establish a relationship (become saved)with GOD and HIS Son Jesus Christ. While we still have time. It will absolutely be the best thing anyone could ever do in his/her entire life. Take care

Diseases like The Black Death or modern-day antibiotic-resistant pathogens like TB are God's way of utilizing population control. Poor people are the ones who breed at the fastest pace, and they are the same ones who get struck with deadly diseases the most. God is perfectly just. Anyone who thinks that worshiping God is a fool. God does not serve the good of the individual faithful human being, but the ecosystem as a whole, with all living things included. We have collectively contributed to the eradication of a large portion of wild nature and the extinction of several species of animals, and to the suffering of our fellow men and women as well. When I taught their graders, I had young students who had been exposed to TB, so our classroom and their education was affected. Treatment for "regular" TB is extended and requires high patient compliance taking a cocktail of antibiotics. MDR and XDR both are difficult diseases to treat. This scenario is compounded when the TB patients reside in a developing country. The plight of the patients depicted in this film is just heartbreaking.

I got to know quite a lot about this disease, which you contract by breathing, when I was finally diagnosed with it in India, after struggling for years in the US to find out what was wrong with me. My case was not in the lungs, but in my bones and nervous system and I could have gotten it anywhere, though my I've spent more time in high-incidence regions of the world than many of my compatriots. Spinal TB is not contagious but my western, ostensibly Christian colleagues treated me like a pariah anyway, because of fear and many false assumptions associated with the affliction. I spent a Himalayan winter in almost complete isolation in an unheated house, in terrible pain and very weak, propped up in a back brace, taking 8-10 tablets a day for the first six months and tapering off to just three daily by the end of my 18-month course of treatment. The meds made it hard to eat and were a constant threat to liver and kidney function. I had headaches, vision problems and extreme weight loss. It took many weeks on the drugs before I started to feel something less than grievously ill and suicidal, because of the pain, social stigma and rejection. I'm fortunate not to be paralyzed or worse, and to have responded to treatment. I did lose part of my spine to this terrible disease, however, and will feel that every day for the rest of my life, but I've seen so many cases of children and young people like these in the film who suffer far worse after losing family members to tuberculosis. When I was about the same age as the lovely girl featured here, charitable and public health campaigns promised obliteration of TB, one of the deadliest diseases of all time, through pasteurization of milk, quarantine measures for TB in the lungs, and a strict regimen of effective antibiotics. There was even talk of a vaccine. I certainly never imagined that, over forty years later, I'd have to struggle to save my own life and mobility and watch so many others fight to survive a disease anyone can contract, just by breathing. When poorly-informed people asked my Keralan doctor how I became infected (no HIPA in India), he responded, "What does it matter? Anyone can get TB." BTW, those TB scratch tests don't always work. In my field, I had them regularly, even as the mycobacteria were feasting on my vertebrae. No one should have to die, or lose their hearing or become paralyzed because of a disease that we've understood for decades.

@Fetus PC-TECH I see your point, but I have done medical volunteering several times, one of which was in Tanzania attempting to help the doctors and surgeons there who were so inadequately equipped it was shocking. I agree with what you're getting at and yes I could always do more, but I have given what little time I have to try and help people suffering, and I hope to do more in the future. If everyone did a tiny amount it would be incredible what we could achieve as fellow humans. FYI I'm not a super religious person but I feel as though keeping these people in my thoughts means that they will not be forgotten and their suffering will not go unnoticed. That was all I was trying to convey. I hope you have a great day

Oh my poor dad, he left hospital in st Lucia re cently after 6 months in isolation, I can't afford to fly out.so his friend facilitates Skype for us to chat. He was all ways saying about suicide, I see that this is Parr for the course with t.b and the side defects of treatment, this is his second isolation, he has had it twice, he is 88.in the UK he worked in a foundry for 25 yr, the doctors say this made him more vulnerable to the disease. I'm so glad the little girl got good results. Her smile and wisdom deeply touched me. Iv posted this documentary to his friend in st Lucia, as they are the ones. Thank god who are caring for him at his home.

However, BCG is not generally recommended in the United States because it has limited effectiveness for preventing TB overall." ................................................................ Either they cannot afford these items, or there is not enough public education teaching people how to use these items. It's very, very easy to say "just use PPE", but remember this is a Third World nation. Some of the population there doesn't even have half the education people in the First World take for granted. The fact you can read this right now means that public education (or at least, some sort of education) worked for you. Uneducated public due to poverty and government corruption means that the public has no voice in politics. They just don't have the necessary education to engage. This is how corruption in these countries thrives, how the rich get richer, the poor poorer.

That little girl is already accepting death. You can tell by her wording, saying this disease makes everyone leave the earth that catches it. It's as if she has no hope of surviving and doesn't expect to. That it is so heart wrenching to see in a child so young 😔. I really wish they had like a children's unit in that treatment center, or it was set up in a way where people who seem to be getting better are in one part, and the most likely terminal patients in another. Just makes me sick to my stomach to think that child could have woken up to a dead woman laying only a few feet away from her, especially after losing her own mother to this. That has to be damaging to someone so young, to feel like death just surrounds you ☹️. I wouldn't be surprised if she felt like that, considering she admits it's hard for someone her age "to see these things". It's shocking to think that such old treatments are being used on something people know is spreading and mutating into resistant strands. I just don't understand why new treatments are not being made. I mean they say they try to keep up to date with the flu vaccine because of how the flu does the same, why are they not doing the same with this? Do they want another pandemic to fight? Bev that's what it seems like it may turn into 😕. It said this was around 2013, someone please tell me things have got better? That a better way of treatment has been made or is at least in the works? I mean that man dug his own sister's grave for goodness sake, and is almost in the grave himself. I'm so happy the little girl responded so well to treatment and recovered. What was once despair in her eyes is now replaced by true happiness along with hopes and dreams. It's just very unfortunate that many don't get the happy ending she did.

Excellent doc. TB is also running rampant in the Russian prison system. It's very scary, particularly when you think that our cities are growing exponentially which may be great for infrastructure but it's a disaster in a pandemic.

My mom ended up with full blown TB, back in 2000ish, i remember my oldest being, maybe 2, and i went to the health department to get a test, and they tested my daughter, they told me "if she tests positive for it, you may as well go pick out her casket" like what a professional way to tell someone that your baby may die, anyway, i tested positive and my daughter didn't "thank you Jesus" but i ended up being a positive/negative, which meant, if i was to EVER come into contact with it again, I'm going to get it full blown, and another lovely tidbit, any time i fill out ANY paperwork, and it asks if i ever tested positive for TB, i HAVE to put yes, which means a whole lot of trips to get chest x-rays, they put me on some meds for a year and my daughter, 6 months. Thankfully, after getting down to 92lbs and being quarantined for 6 months, my mother pulled through it, but now that she's in her early 60s, her lungs are trash, and she can't walk two feet without having her oxygen on

@@robindelancy7097 extreme drug resistance doesn't mean that there are no drugs working, it just means that the drugs currently used are mostly not effective. To treat any kind of multi drug resistant bacteria is a trial and error. Especially new drugs have a bigger chance of being effective on drug resistant bacteria. So your comment is completely oblivious of chances you get by introducing new medication. I also couldn't reciprocate how you came up with the idea that these new drugs aren't being used or aren't effective on XDR or MDR for that matter. Through my short research on pubmed, there are small studies that have shown promising results. These are obviously very small studies, but given that the drugs are relatively new, that isn't surprising. There is no way of saying at this current time, that they aren't working. So for Pete's sake, do your research next time!

@Fetus PC-TECH It's not just actors. $5 billion has been spent already in advertising alone on the mid term elections. Yes $5 billion with a B. Can you imagine that? Can you imagine how many lives could be saved? How many homeless people could be housed? How many poor people could be given an education? How many medical bills could be paid? And I mean in our own country - the US. It's disgraceful in our country to waste such money, on what? On advertising for a candidate. So the one who spends the most wins? It's shameful what we spend our money on, when people are dying for lack of food or medicine, or even water, here and around the world.
