The Deadly Californian "Shipwreck Islands" | West of The West | Absolute History

This is the remarkable human history of eight beautiful Islands found off the coast of California. Known as the Galapagos of North America, the Channel Islands can be seen from the mainland, yet few people know their rich and important history. These are the stories of the first European settlements to arrive on the island, the settlers who went in search of the west and didn't stop until they reached the edge.

As a SoCal native, seeing Catalina Island being harvested for reef rock is a sad situation. Preservation of these islands is so important.

Never been on a boat close to the islands. The day after rain I've seen San Nicholas Island twice from the top of PV. Sad that Catalina had many drums of DDT dumped off its west coast after WWII. Crazy makin'. Don't respond to haters. ❤ ✌

Not gonna lie, I have no connection personally to these places, but where is the Native perspective? They only talk about the history ~100 years ago, what about the tens of thousands of years before that?

I absolutely adore the Channel Islands, I grew up seeing them frequently as a Cali girl and even visited one of them as a school field trip in 5th grade. I share the sentiment of the man who said in this vid how he’s reluctant shedding light on them because the tourism they have now is more than enough. “If you love the Channel Islands, stay away.” Hear, hear. Beautiful. I miss home.

Coming to you from Canada, but I was born in Oxnard, CA which has its own distinct view of the Channel Islands, and I am so, so grateful, especially now being so far removed from this beautiful place, to be able to say I am one who has stepped foot upon those shores. I even remember writing a short story based on my experience there for one of my college literature courses. In any event, it was such a delight to have this to watch, thank you!
