THE DAY THE CAMERON PEAK WILDFIRE STARTED ... sadly, Colorado's largest wildfire ever!

THE DAY THE CAMERON PEAK WILDFIRE STARTED ... sadly, Colorado's largest wildfire ever!
On August 13th, 2020 ... I went up for a nice afternoon of fishing at Chambers Lake ... but as I pulled up to the lake, I quickly realized my plans had changed. 2020 has been full of curveballs, and this day was just another example of that. Instead of fishing, I witnessed the very beginning of what has now become one of Colorado's largest wildfires ever. From the moment I saw it ... I knew the Cameron Peak wildfire had all the ingredients to turn into an absolute monster ... lots of fuel, wind, heat, tough terrain, beetle kill, etc, etc. And sure enough, this massive fire has now consumed nearly 135,000 acres and has been burning strong for over 2 months! Wish I could've just had a nice day of fishing that day. This beautiful area where so many people live, work and recreate will be forever changed :( Thankful for all the firefighters who have put their life on the line to try and put this one out 👩‍🚒🚨🚒🧯

Hoping cooler weather will eventually calm this thing down and looking forward to the day we can go back up there and support the local businesses! Thanks for your comment!!

In similar tragedies, we've lost so much here in British Columbia over the last decade or so. We also have vast swaths of beetle killed pine. That in itself is heartbreaking -- great bull pine that I lived amongst in my youth, when I lived in a cabin in the Purcell Mountains, stand like great skeletons on the arid hills of the Okanagan and Kootenays. We did get a bit of a break here this summer, locally, but we were often choking on the smoke drifting from California and Washington. Scary. Climate change affects the whole world and we who live on this fantastic continent are not immune. I hope that we get a good snowpack this winter and the long-term drought conditions will ease. Keep on exploring and reminding us of the beauty we still have. Perhaps we will care for it a little bit better in years to come.

Oh man, you’re naming off some of my favorites in BC. We lived in Squamish for several years and then lived right in downtown Vancouver for a year .... really enjoyed my time there exploring every chance I could get. Breaks my heart to know these wild places are suffering and at such high risk of wildfire. So many special places this last Summer were altered for the rest of our lifetime at least ... and while the popularity of these places continues to rise (thanks very much COVID), they are changing or altogether disappearing at an even faster pace. Not a good combination for these treasured places...

@@WhatMyLensSees Well, I'll be ... stands to reason why we connected. I (almost) lived in Squamish, since I spent so much time climbing and developing climbs there -- driving out from Vancouver, even after work (at MEC and other outdoor stores) to get some climbs in. I developed the now popular day-climbing area, Octopus's Garden for which the Alpine Club awarded me a broken piolet -- perfect for hacking moss out of those granite cracks! I lived in just about every neighbourhood in Vancouver, launching my studio in Point Grey, in 1984. After a stint in Toronto commercial studios and another 3 year sojourn in Vancouver, moved to Vancouver Island. Recently retired to the boonies, overlooking the strait of Juan de Fuca and Olympic Mountains of Washington.

Great video! We where camping off of Manhattan/fire road 571 that day with our Grandson. I have a few pics that I took at 3:53 of the fire. I know we were a few miles away from Chambers lake. We decided to pack up and leave. With all the dead wood and lack of fire mitigation up there, it wouldn't be long. I'm heart broken that some of our favorite spots to camp are no longer there. I am thankful that the fire teams and those that has worked tirelessly to safe lives and property. (The real heros in my book!)

I was just in this area yesterday and the burn scar was heartbreaking to see. We’ve had our share of devastating fires in Colo Springs but obviously nothing compared to this. I remember watching afar from the news as this fire happened, but to see the aftermath in person was something else. I watched the Waldo Canyon fire grow before my eyes from a small plume of smoke to burning hundreds of homes. It was nuts to watch!

Thankfully the South Platte bounced back strong eventually, so hopefully the Poudre will too. Appreciate your comment and hope you can still net some nice fish in the coming months/years up there!! Very interesting. Nice video. Very unfortunate it is our local fire. A couple of questions. You mention it just started a couple of minutes prior, but that plumb with dark smoke indicates flash-over and it looks like about an acre on the ground. If you see this, I am curious how long had you been at Chambers Lake before you noticed and was there any weather rolling through 45 minutes to an hour prior to this? 2 hours before? Lightning strike fires usually start with 1 or 2 trees, and take a little time to grow through the initial phases to get to canopy flash-over. Usually you have a small wisp of smoke, but it is usually observable due to local weather. Thunderstorms often have a bit of rain, sleet or snow in the air.

@@geoffrobinson7104 hey there Geoff, I arrived at the Chambers Lake area right around 215pm that day and started filming as soon as I got to that first day use parking area. It was such an unreal sight, and just naturally grabbed my iPhone and started recording. In between filming, I also talked with some of the forest service folks (they were all just sort of watching in awe) and the campground attendant to try and understand what they were planning to do with all the campers (and it still hadn’t completely sunk in that my plans for fishing/camping that afternoon had come to a screeching halt!) So, unfortunately, I can’t speak to what weather may have been in the area in the minutes/hours before because I was still on my way up (drove up from Fort Collins via Poudre Canyon and had a nice lunch along the way before I arrived at Chambers). I can say that when I arrived ... the skies were relatively clear, it was a very hot Summer day, and the wind was really whipping! Such a sad day and one I will never forget. Appreciate your comment. I kept warning the hikers heading up to Blue Lake that day not to proceed, as the fire was too close to the trail. They all reported the same thing "the guy in front of you said it was just a few trees, probably a controlled fire." Many of them didn't take me seriously and proceeded to hike. I was running down the trail and never caught up to this person in front of me who kept minimizing the seriousness of the fire to the people heading up. When I got to the trailhead, that person was no where to be found. Whoever he was, I am confident that person started the fire. I backpacked out there that night. There's a ton of campgrounds up that way, and so far, the only one I've heard of that was damaged/destroyed is Jacks Gulch Campground. Thank you for this 🙏 I chose not to even reply to a few of these comments because they were so ridiculous 🤣
