I hadn't considered Jackson's victory at Winchester in context with McClellan's progress up the Peninsula. I knew that it affected the availability of MacDowell's reinforcements to Little Mac, but hadn't realized how close the timing of it was. Thanks for drawing those connections.

Ah.. the Shenandoah Campaign and Jacksons Foot Cavalry. Seems Lincoln got nervous, too. Anxiety is a bad advisor, so much I learned.

I mean you can’t really blame Lincoln. We have the luxury of hindsight but from view of Lincoln if DC was left open the evacuation alone would be crippling for Lincoln politically, and it could have enticed Britain or France to ally with the Confederacy if the Union appeared weak.

@@gologotha7922 Oh, I don't blaue him. It's human. Lincoln had to act a long time under stress and to evaluate the moves of someone like Jackson isn't easy. PS. And I have may experience with anxiety. 😉

@@WendyDaCanuck The Confederate States of America might not have survived for as long as it did, nor the Southern identity and desire to be apart from and a separate country might not be as strong as it is today. Furthermore, my state would be very different and be even further under the Federal thumb than it is today, not to mention the rest of the South. Richmond would have probably been sacked and its people victimized on a horrendous scale at that point. I could go on and on... but far more trivially, not everything near where I live would be named "Stonewall" as it is now, including the beautiful Stonewall resort... his boyhood home/birth town wouldn't be a museum near here and well-maintained as it is, nor would there be a magnificent equine statute of him outside the courthouse here as there is now. Of course, had Stonewall not been killed prematurely, the South likely would not have lost at Gettysburg-- actually there probably would not have been a Gettysburg because it was folly strategically... Stonewall would likely have bypassed it and threatened Philadelphia or Baltimore instead.... but that's a topic for a different conversation!

Wow. His final statements are so on-the-nose. It really makes you wonder if he truly was this "blundering idiot" that history had made him out to be, or did he simply perform to the best of his abilities in a time of changing warfare, and drastic consequences.

Definitely NOT a blundering idiot by any means. He was highly educated, well experienced (by the standards of the day), and superb with logistics, engineering, and staff work. All valuable skills for an army commander. But he had some important shortcomings, as well. And those are the traits people tend to focus on.

Jackson was a a total burnout by the time he could reach Richmond. It would be the heavy rains that flooded the Chickahominy allowing Lee to safely tackle isolated crops of the Union army at Mechanicsville. Magruder's addition of theatrics along with the wildly overestimated number of Confederate forces reported to McClellan by his spies were the main elements in Mac's defeatist attitude that would allow the 7 days to become a Union defeat.

Thanks for the feedback Nicholas--our foray into real time history ends with a wargame next week, but the timing of your observation is curious. We've released more wargame videos on the channel (3 battles) in the last 30 days than we have in any previous month the channel has existed. So hopefully we haven't lost our "wargaming channel" cred too much....

I don't think it's wildly unreasonable for a historical wargaming channel to indulge in some history... I would argue context only makes the hobby more enjoyable. Not being American, I find this series highly informative and makes what had previously been a pretty distant and irrelevant war to me far more engaging.
