Always fascinating watching these two play each other. Mightn't be obvious, but even here it's possible to see how Novak was able to have a greater Grand Slam record through 2010-19 than Federer. When Roger is moving and striking the ball as he was here, he is close to unplayable. Even after that 6-1 drubbing, however, Novak broke him at the start of the second. Eventually, all it takes is for Roger to be a half-step slower, for him to drop his shots closer to the service line than the back of the court and with less penetration, and then Novak's absurd defensive skills wear Roger down. 2019 Wimbledon is a great example. Roger played the better tennis for probably 95% of the match yet still lost, with Novak's brick wall proving too strong when it mattered. Heartbreak for Roger, remarkable for Novak. I will always be of the opinion that, seen at their peaks, Roger is the most complete all-court player ever to have played professionally. He's also far and away for me the most fascinating and enjoyable to watch, likely because he IS capable of all sorts of variations and can do some truly ridiculous things while being graceful and making it look effortless. I have great respect for Novak and Rafa, of course, but it's Roger in full flight I'd want to use were I asked to show someone who's never seen tennis played what the game can look like at its best. Novak's Grand Slam record of 2010-2019 is as good as Roger's 2000-2009, if not a fraction better (can't remember the numbers). I have loads of respect for his achievements. Rafa is of course in another universe when it comes to clay. Hard to imagine anyone topping THAT particular record. As of 2022 the three of them have a combined 61 GS titles. That's 15 YEARS of ALL the GS being won by one of the three. Astounding. Am old enough to have grown up watching Lendl, Mac, Agassi, Sampras etc. Never thought I'd see ONE player with a record of 20 GS titles, let alone THREE of them, together spanning some 20 years.

@@JohnDavidDunlap And they slowed the courts/balls. Federer adapted as good as he can and its amazing that he remained an absolute top player in a practically different sport! I am not sure Djokovic could adapt his style to be as successful on these faster courts of Federer's prime. In any case, while I agree with your "technical" analysis, I still think the biggest advantag of Djokovic is his mentality/clutchness especially on big points. Had Djokovic not been such an incredible mental champ in their on-court meetings, Federer would have easily taken 2-4 titles from him in their finals. That would put 4-8 GS gap between them. Alas, the mentality and deliver their best under pressure is the hallmark of champions. And Novak has the edge in that aspect without a doubt.

This is why I think Roger from 2005-2007 would have battered Djokovic even in his prime. His ability to destroy an opponent when he is on his game is unmatched. He can't keep up defensively against Djokovic so most of the time he has to make a move in the rally, and Federer in his 30's is just simply not as good at ending points quickly like he was in the early stages of his career. If you had Federer who could end a defensive rally in the blink of an eye with how disgustingly consistent his forehand was, facing off against 2011 or 2015 Djokovic, my money would be on Federer.

Nole was mentally on edge against Roger every match they played back then. The crowd, not knowing what to expect gamewise, the occasional misshit, the net onslaught - it was messing with his head. He realised he had to take matters into his own hands and started upping the aggression from the baseline later on which limited Rogers creativity and messed with his timing from 2011 on. Also his serve got way better. Roger always managed to overrun Nole on a couple of occaisions through the year (12/14/15), but the bigger matches went noles way because he tipped the odds ever so slightly in his favour that it was enough to prevail under the most pressure and over a longer time

What about Federer beating him 9-4 from 2006- 2009? After a player is older is obvious that he will loose more often to a younger player. Also, tennis is one against the rest. Like I mentioned before Federer was out 10 times, injured while Djokovic was out only once, in 2017. So from 2005 to 2018 Federer reach 20 GS. playing against all the players. Djokovic reached 20 GS when Federer, Wawrinka. Thiem and Murray were out injured. When the best competitors were sick, NoVaX reaches 20 GS. And there was a pandemia and Wimbledon was suspended. Is easier to win when your most dangerous rivals are out sick. The truth is that the era of Federer Nadal and Djokecovid started in 2003 and Federer reach 20 GS slams earlier, in 2018. Roger also won a GS at age 36. When Djokecovid does the same at age 36 then we talk. And I hope he is allowed to play. I don’t want any excuses from ignorant fans.

@@PedroJ1944 Federer won how many majors in his 30s? 4? Djokovic already has like 8 or 9 in his 30s lol. The key thing you fail to mention is that even though Federer was injured, he still would likely not have beat Djokovic EVEN if he was healthy. Notice how Federer won 3 slams (3 of his 4 slam wins in the last 11 years) in the time DJOKOVIC WAS ABSENT. In 2017 Djokovic was terrible and injured, and same with early 2018. You think it’s fluke that Federer won in those years? The only time Federer ever beat Djokovic in a grand slam final was in 2007, when Djokovic was 20 lol. You can’t deny that Djokovic has absolutely destroyed Federer in big matches over their career. Even you would admit that, I’m sure. Djokovic has beat him in four or five major finals if I recall correctly. In fact, the only important match I remember Federer beating Djokovic was in the French Open 2011. Fed was 29 and Djokovic 23, and Djokovic would go on to win 3/4 majors that year and would beat Nadal and Fed 9/10 matches they played (with that loss to Fed the exception). Outside of that, I literally cannot recall Federer beating Djokovic in a major. I hear all these excuses about Age, but somehow Fed and Nadal fans talk about 2006-2010 when Djokovic was basically a kid who wasn’t even close to his prime. The difference is Federer and Nadal would’ve dominated the 2010s if it wasn’t for Djokovic. Djokovic would’ve maybe had 3 majors in his early career if not for Nadal or Fed.

People talk all these stats and numbers - but tennis isn’t just a numbers game. The greatest players don’t hold all the records. They never won all the matches. Federer could’ve done so much more with the time he had. Djokovic did all that was possible - and still can win more majors. I don’t care if Nadal or Djokovic finish at 22, 23, it’s just a number. Federer embodies the grace and effortlessness of the game - Nadal shows the intensity, grit, and fighting spirit. Djokovic grew as a player to counter them as they slipped out of their primes. I’m not taking anything away from Djokovic. He is the greatest champion this sport will probably ever see. Federer is the greatest player, Nadal is the greatest fighter. They all stand as the goat, each in their own way. I won’t let a few match points or a few tiebreaks they played between them separate them. Mental part of the sport exists too, Federer never played his best when it was absolutely necessary - that’s what Djokovic does - that’s what champions do. Federer revolutionized the sport - and among mental blocks - injuries and flaws in his backhand (often blamed to racket head size) slowed him from what he was capable of. That’s why I admire Djokovic so much. He never has these problems - like he was too great to have them, and if he got them he only roared back stronger. I don’t care what you say or think. They are all the greatest - and arrogant fans pleading one or another players case will not convince me. It bothers me to see every time a player wins a slam - immediately their players are chanting goat. It happened with Nadal at AO 22 and with Djokovic last year. Why are we so focused on the slams, becoming so toxic with each other? Look at each players flaws, strengths and unique beauty of their game. They will always be equal

Agreed! He won't retire if he keeps winning at the slams. It's up to the new players to knock him off his perch but frankly they are not good enough. Sad but true. Overall Alcaraz is probably his biggest threat and the best player to kick Novak into retirement.

The way people talk about Fed is the same way people talk about Michael Jordan. People refuse to say that MJ is the greatest basketball player because of how few trophies he has in comparison to LeBron. Federer molded the landscape of Modern Tennis. Both Fed and Jordan forced everyone around them to either get better or they were getting swept away, and that means more to the sport than trophies do.

Djokovic is unique in his longevity This, along with his mental fortitude, has allowed him to amass all the records. But you have to remember that before the big three, it was almost unheard of for a tennis player to be playing at such a high level after 30. Federer's age caught up with him quicker than Djokovic's, but you could say the same about almost any other player in history. Yes, Federer had a long career and was still in the mix in his later years, but you never felt like it was "peak Federer." Also, the game slowed down during his tenure making his style of play slightly less effective, while at the same time improving the effectiveness of Djokovic and Nadal. I don't think Federer was as mentally tough as the other 2 guys. He was just so talented and so used to blowing other players off the court that he never really had to develop that. And on occasions when Djokovic and Nadal could meet his level and give him a good fight, he sometimes wilted. I still think he was the most talented of the big 3. If they all brought their A game, in their prime form, I would give federer the edge on faster surfaces, Djokovic on slower hard courts, and of course Nadal on clay.
