exactly....greatest grass court player to not win a wimbledon....Ivan was in hot form heading into all those mid-80's wimbledons. Even skipped French open couple times to get extra practise on grass. sadly for him he encountered Edberg and Becker inevitably in the title rounds, and also Mcenroe in the 83 sf. Like they say you've got to beat the best players to win the title....or atleast hope to keep winning when someone else knocks out the better players. (like how Federer bt Soderling at FO) My most sad memory about lendl at Wimbledon is not the losses to Edberg and Becker (they were better grass court players), but the golden chance he got in 1987. Doohan had stunned Becker early on, the draw had opened up, and Lendl himself edged out Edberg in the Semifinals....If only Lendl could have beaten Cash. Given a chance, thats the one result Lendl would love to go back in time and change in his career if given a chance.

On clay is this the right strategy but not on grass. The lack of diversity led to the dominance of the Big Four, which had no challengers in the field of quick baseline tennis. The courts at queen's played more like a hard court, so weren't the greatest preparation for the grass of Wimbledon which back then had a much lower, faster skidding bounce. Nowadays, Wimbledon grass plays much more like this - it makes you wonder what Lendl (or Mats Wilander) might have managed at Wimbledon if the courts back then had been like this.

The best players and best time of tennis. Slow clay courts, fast grass courts and even faster indoor surfaces, much more diversity and style of play than now. Consider this, Sampras faced from McEnroe, through Lendl, Becker, Agassi, and even Federer, Roddick and Safin at the end. He didnt have it easy his whole career. After 2003, Federer had 5,6 years of no real competition. Hewitt, Roddick and Safin were just not his caliber. Although Safin is the most talented of them all. Even old Agassi was playing Federer at the end of his career in many finals. That says a lot about the competition from 2002 to 2006 when Agassi retired. The last legend from that generation. Hewitt was the prelude of the downfall of risk taking tennis, almost everybody plays the same today because of the homogenous surfaces. Even Federer adapted his game to these slower surfaces. Imagine what tennis we missed seeing from him because of this major change in the game. I mean, Hewitt winning Wimbledon in 2002 after they slowed it down so much...nuff said. Ivanisevic won a year earlier with the old fast grass. And after that came the boring defensive players of this era like Ferrero, Hewitt, Coria, Canas etc...and culminating with Nadal and Djokovic. Consider this too. Agassi and Courier are baseliners like Nadal and Djoker, but compared to them their game is so much more offensive than both Nadal and Djoker. When you take risk away from the game it becomes less interesting. All the spaniards would just almost skip grass season, they had no chance there pre 2002. Yet today, its very different. The tour has become like an year all round Roland Garros. If they keep going this way Wimbledon and Roland will become so similar that in 2040 they will just equalize everything. Mark my words. Thanks for reading.

Great serve and volley but also using that chip backhand to make the ball drop at players feet or short angles cross court. Really well played by Lendl! However, if I remember correctly, Lendl didn´t play the French Open in 1990 in order to fully concentrate on preparing for Wimbledon. Becker mainly used Queens to get into shape for Wimbledon. He basically never was at the top of his game in Queens. Even though he won the tournament in 1987, for example, the final against Connors was terrible by Becker´s standards. Plus, in 1990 Becker got dependant on sleeping pills. Just as in Wimbledon against Edberg in the 1st 2 sets, Becker just seemed off here. There are a few odd mistakes by Becker even in this short vid, which happened only around that time, 1990-1991.

Becker won Queens at 1985 and also in 1988, he won Wimbledon in 1985 as an unseeded player. In 1988 he beat Edberg in the Queen's final and he said Edberg would crack with double faults in crucial moment in a match but it was Becker that crack in 1988 Wimbledon final. Lendl here played the best grass game but he was unfortunate in 1989 Wimbledon, he led Becker 2 sets to 1 until the rain stopped their semi final match and sort of put a stop to the momentum that Lendl had during the match, Becker came back to win the next two sets. Lendl in 1990 seemed to hedge his bet too heavily on the Wimbledon, reached his peak two or three weeks earlier then the later round of Wimbledon, while Becker and Edberg were still working on their form before Wimbledon. At Wimbledon semi Lendl's form already dipped below his best while Edberg was approaching his best.

@@jliang70 Agree with most points, but Becker didn´t crack in the 1988 Wimbledon final. He was just getting more and more exhausted, physically and mentally, after losing one day of rest before the final, since he had to play the 4th set of the semifinal against Lendl. Plus, Edberg was playing tremendously well in the final.

Ivan Lendl was at his best & Becker was not at his best, looking exhausted..... Becker's game was not even 50% of his potential on that day. He was looking damn tired and exhausted. Otherwise, it would have been a different result. Anyways, Lendl played shots of his life (those return shots off Becker's serves).

Unpopular opinion : this is excruciatingly boring, like clockwork. Everyone in the stadium knows they are going to volley on every single point without fail, even when it's a slow second serve. Seems idiotic at times when it would have been better to construct a point and then go forward to finish at the net. I would never be a fan if this was the tennis today. Long boring defensive baseline rallies are equally as bad. Point construction increases the quality of the tennis.

I disagree, it was good to have one surface for the serve volley game, that I find as entertaining as longer rallies. Some players didn't serve volley all the time, so there was still some variation. Grass is too similar to hard court now.
