    Looking BACKWARD, I'd take Kareem just on longevity and having an unblockable shot. Better defender than he gets credit for, too. ...but if you told me I had one guy to start a franchise around, there's no question in my mind it'd be Larry. I'll take his 10 or so good years and all his intangibles when building a franchise above Kareem, above Magic, above Wilt, and CERTAINLY above LeFlop.

    But he did come back to lose to the lakers the following year only to dig deep and win it again after that series lose. So Larry Legend was GREAT but so was Magic and Kareem and Cooper. The Lakers really were GREAT. They respected each other, the Lakers and Boston. Nothing like the 80's - NOTHING! I miss that era.

    Bird was the best from the time he entered the league. Just not recognized by mvp vote yet. The Celtics were his team from day one and everyone knew it. McHale was as big a factor in the 81 season as Parish

    @@user-iv9er3nr6z Jordan did not play against Larry Bird, but the Celtics, Bird didn't guard Jordan, but that 63 felt nice in a loss. It was a case of let the man have his points, but don't let anyone else beat you. Maybe he should not have had the sandwich and he may not have lost.

    To see two great teams on the same court when I was growing up is a magical memory. The only thing I "hate" about it is that I got to be "too demanding" (of course I am being sarcastic). Seriously though I am so grateful to have lived to see this live.

    I understand, i watched Gretzky live at Northlands Colosseum in Edmonton a number of times in his prime. He was the Payton Manning and Tom Brady of hockey when he was on the ice. As Viktor Tikhonov the coach of the USSR Red Army team said once, our team new the second Gretzky stepped on to the ice. Enough said.

    The Old Boston Garden never had air conditioning then and right up until they demolished it to put up the new stadium back I wanna say in 97, 98? That one had Air conditioning installed

    ...we got robbed of several more Celtic/Laker Matchups the night Len Bias died on draft night. The Lakers got their next star Worthy via trade, as did the Celtics with Bias. It was set up perfectly for the rivalry to continue for a long time, and to make matters worse All Star Reggie Lewis dies of a heart ailment a couple years later.

    I was a magic cream Kurt rambis you know those guys I was a fan of theirs I couldn't stand Larry Bird because I don't know how many times we get into the finals with them and he just spank our ass but now since you know you no longer plays and personally these players couldn't hang with these guys but I digress Larry Bird is one of the best players that's ever played the game yeah you had your Michael Jordan's that can fly through the air and slam and jam and dunk but when it comes to Larry Bird he was an all-around player he can pass he can shoot and for white boy that couldn't jump sure as hell look like he put a couple of dunks down on a few boys that were supposed to be badasses back in those days so yeah Larry Bird was a badass they'll never be another one like him

    I always thought refs deferred to MJ who often took 3 steps to the basket. Bird took 4 or 5 and no whistle. It was so blatant, I had to wonder if they'd suspended the traveling rule for the game. Still love Bird.

    Sure there is. The East was much tougher than the West. By the time the East was settled the Eastern Conference Champs were beat to death. The Lakers were fantastic but I don't think they would have been there to win 5 if they were in the East. That Rivalry was what saved the NBA.

    Lakers had a cakewalk to the finals every year while the Celtics were going through wars with the Sixers Pistons Bucks Hawks and Cavaliers all stacked great teams plus the Lakers had more talent than the Celtics and feared Bird as everyone else did as well

    The Celtics would have beaten the Lakers in 87 had Len Bias not died, the Celtics were one player short against the Lakers that year, that player would have been Bias. The Celtics were battling a lot of nagging injuries going into that finals series against the Lakers and the Lakers still needed six games to beat them, if the Celtics have Bias it's most likely the exact opposite, with the Celtics winning that series in six games ..

    Totally bias take. The Celtics would do anything to win, including turning the heater on in the Lakers locker room, when it was unbearable. That was the last time the Lakers and Magic would lose to the Celtics. If there was a year, the Lakers should have won, but didn't, it was that year.
