The Dassler Bross: The Family Feud That Created Adidas and Puma

“You can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your family.” Anyone who’s ever had a difficult relationship with a sibling can attest to the truthfulness of this statement. Even the closest of brothers have moments that make them wish they’d been born an only child, after all.
The Dassler Brothers were, to wit, NOT the closest of siblings. They hated each other so much that they refused to speak to each other. But what makes the feud between the Dassler brothers so unique was that it spilled over from their personal into their professional lives. They split the family shoe making business off into two separate companies that would come to dominate the athleticwear business in a way no one ever had before. The success of their respective companies can, at least in part, be credited to the rivalry between the two brothers, as they pushed their employees to outdo each other as a worldwide audience watched.
The feud split apart not only the Dassler family, but their entire hometown as well, as every family was forced to pick a side. The two companies are still household names today, each earning billions annually in sales, still competing against each other for market share, forever locked together by the personal rivalry of their founders. Two men, two brothers who, though they were unable to choose their family, surely wished that they could have.

Yeah, Simon has a group of channels that he produces and presents himself, but is also a hired presenter on some others. This was one of the latter. But then it became apparent that what he was actually doing was forcibly shaving the heads of some of his basement writers, supergluing big beards to their faces and renting them out to other channels. The producers of this channel did not feel they could go along with that, ethically.(allegedly)

I think if the pair had been more civil the industry that they pioneered would still be playing catch up to what it is today. Without their intense rivalry it wouldn't have been until Nike and Reebok came along that the advancement in the technology would have really taken off, assuming that they would have even started in the first place if the rivalry hadn't created a lucrative market. On a side note: imagine being able to piss off an entire town by mix and matching clothing produced in that town.

When you mentioned the two big US shoe companies of the 80's, Nike and Reebok, my first thought was "what about Converse?" How ironic that in the video clip of the woman looking at tennis shoes, she picks up a Converse. As someone who grew up playing basketball in the 80's and 90's, Converse was the big brand in the US until Nike got Jordan to wear their shoes, and Reebok was British.

I thought the rivalry was still on - Puma was working with BASF on a new material & Adidas swooped in on the deal & launched Boost. To be fair, I bought a pair from each brand & the one that impressed me more was the Adidas. Not because of the cushioning material, but the Continental rubber outsole. I thought it was a gimmicks corporate synergy thing, but they say grippy & hold up well to wear & tear.

Rudi was the big brother. I think it's obvious he had some tags on his abilities simply because of this. The fact is, Adi was far smarter and more savvy than Rudi. As a big sibling who has 4 younger brothers, I've been on the other side of this lol. Eldest son always thinks he knows better. Adi was a genius, Rudi couldn't hack living in his shadow. Also, am I the only person who really hopes that the Dassler families can come back together at some point. Both Adi and Rudi created legacies, it's a shame the legacy killed the family bond. If only Rudi hadn't been so butthurt that he wasn't as smart as his wee brother.
