When I first came to the city in late 1980, Etan Patz was all over the headlines. SoHo was a sleepy little hamlet compared to now, so the commenter below probably didn't realize the mother was lulled into thinking, "What could go wrong?"

Nieghborhood still has problems. I live at Sullivan and Spring. I have messed up experiences everyday. (Part of the charm). This morning while hanging out at my car during Street cleaning, while chatting with the lady parked behind me doing the same, a paranoid schizophrenic stopped in between us, about 20 feet from either of us and just screamed at us and even jumped up and down enraged. We paused, let him pass, then finished our conversation about parking rules. 2) 6 weeks ago a serial kill shot 2 homeless people within a block of either building I work out of. Within 20 feet of my entrance door, on camera. Its on youtube. Great enighborhood but has its sketchiness intact.

Note: the industrial history of SoHo wasn't really discussed, but the neighborhood was home to many factories up through the 70s; when I lived on St. Mark's Place in the 80s, I had a neighbor who had worked in a Christmas-ornament factory in SoHo. When the factories cleared out, the artists moved in; SoHo in the 60s and 70s was one of the original artists' neighborhoods; when I was in art school in the 80s, a friend of mine and I would "do" the galleries after classes. Mary Ellen Mark kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zqtmw8OIabq_mJc.html was one of the many SoHo artists; she had-probably still has-a loft on Prince street.
