I thought it was obvious since she also took his phone and kept the camera on herself the whole time. Even when she’s telling Miles to put away his phone at the club, she got more upset when he put the camera on himself and didn’t keep it on her. Even during her set she tries to make this whole message about how everyone is obsessed with social media but then at the end she recenters it onto herself, making it into this holier than thou speech because she’s getting off of social media. She is the culmination of that influencer personality.

i had the great pleasure of creating a stan account for the movie character's social media at the start of the promotional period of the film. listen, hear me out ok? the movie management or whatever started up this insta account for "kurt" and i stumbled upon it about 5 days into its conception(god bless you kurtis conner). there wasn't a trailer yet, and not any buzz about the movie that i was aware of. i thought, "f it, im going to make a stan account for this strange person/character on the internet that is definitely joe keery ? because what is this???". going into it, me and a ton of other (ironically, over the top) stan accounts really tried to embody the core craziness of the internet stan culture; even though nobody really knew what was actually happening, as the posts and stories started to progressively get more unhinged and it was clear that we were witnessing the creation of the spree killer (the trailer was out for goodness sake), we were all still aggressively defending him, glossing over the obvious giant red flags, and making funny meme content about kurt (ONCE AGAIN we were intentionally ignoring the fact that this character was killing people. it was a joke because he was a character, and in a way we were characters too. it was obvious that the fans interacting the way that we were was supposed to happen, especially because the account would heavily interact with and repost memes from the kurtie fandom. us acting the way that we did supported the message of the film). genuinely, all of the "kurties" that i met were very sweet people and we were all just making jokes, theories and bored in quarantine. it was such an interesting experience and the movie was really cool. im just glad that i got to be along for the ride

Like I watch a ton of KZread and twitch but no i'm not aware someone cemented their head in a microwave and I hardly think that makes me sheltered. This seems inspired (atleast the 'Spree' bit) by the 2016 case of Jason Dalton, the Uber driver who, for no known reason, killed 6 people. Especially the joke of "haha hope you know that im not the crazy guy!" "oh... i know" which I believe happened irl where Dalton's passengers were discussing the crazy uber guy on the news and Dalton was playing along.

Yes! Also how parasocial relationships create toxic fan communities and how toxic fan culture affects the creators and spurs them on. They could do a sequel of sorts where it follows one of his fans watching the happenings of this movie and participating in the fandom and getting increasingly obsessed with defending him, trying to get him popular, and emulating his behavior as they try to brush off their increasing insecurities about their idol's moral character.

  • @Amarianee

I think the real horror in this movie is the disturbing fact that it would be so easy for this to be real. I remember when Saw 3-D came out and they had the same societal comment with the murder scene in the store window, passersby stopping to film instead of calling the police because they thought it was a publicity stunt. I remember being mildly disturbed because even then that was a genuine possibility with brands upping the ante for exposure. Now, years later, that scenario is even more disturbingly possible, in a mundane way, store window not needed. We are so jaded and overexposed to fake reality/"prank" videos, and the reach of streamers is wide and instant that the line between what's real and what's entertainment/shock value is blurred. I would like to believe that in actual reality, there would be significantly more people calling the police and realising that it's definitely not a prank, but I can't honestly say that would 100% be the case. It's a very disturbing realisation.

I think part of the problem is our own desensitization to things that are absolutely horrible because of all the times we've seen those things portrayed on TV. We now see people do those things in real life, but because they're behind a screen and we don't know them personally it's easier to believe they are just characters. They have the flaws we tend to be drawn to: they are nothing like we think people in real life act like and we'd like to know what would happen if a crazy person from the movies came to the 'real world'. Absurdly enough, they actually exist in our world. I wonder how much of that persona is just some sort of elaborate character they put on to be popular and how they feel once the cameras are turned off.

I low key am kind of fascinated actually by this shift in entertainment ambition. Late 90s I dreamt of moving to LA and being one of the thousands of waitresses doing audition after audition. I didn't end up doing it because LA far away and life happens. Nowadays you'd dream of being a waitress in your home town to pay the bills while trying to go viral online.

LOVED this movie. It was a really in touch take, amazing casting, and I loved the elements of satire as well. I've read some people don't like the ending, but for me how cringey it was seemed like the whole point, like if you're not squirming in your seat going "oh god this is just the worst Kurt don't say that" then the movie isn't working. And also, most people wouldn't believe it's real, since this kind of thing gets faked SO often. So…yeah. This movie's unsettlingly realistic.

He's supposed to be reviewing "life" and people send ridiculous things to try that he can't say no to and it escalates so well because each subsequent thing makes his life so much harder as the results of the things he's tried compound. It's a brilliant show that everyone should watch.
