The dark side of agriculture in Ethiopia (2/2) | DW Documentary (Farming documentary)

Foreign business investors are looking to buy farmland in Africa. One of the most profitable new agricultural hotspots is Ethiopia. [Online until: February 4, 2019]
Part 1: • The dark side of agric...
Farmland - the new green gold. In the hopes of huge export revenues, the Ethiopian government is leasing millions of hectares of land to foreign investors. But there’s a dark side to this dream of prosperity.
The results are massive forced evictions, the destruction of smallholdings, state repression, and a vicious spiral of violence in light of environmental devastation. Global institutions like the EU, World Bank and DFID are contributing to this disaster with billions of dollars in development money every year. Whoever gets in their way is met with severe consequences. The young Ethiopian environmental activist Argaw learned that the hard way when he tried to raise awareness for his country’s plight.
Are transnational land investments bolstering the economy or selling out the country? While some hope for financial gains and development, others are losing their very livelihood. In pursuit of the story, we meet investors, bureaucrats, persecuted journalists, struggling environmentalists and farmers who have been evicted from their land. Swedish director Joakim Demmer’s shocking real-life thriller starts in apparently remote corners of Ethiopia and leads through global financial centers, right to our dining tables.

After watching both parts and not seeing or hearing the Ethiopian government side on this issue, it appears to me just like many other African countries with these types of issues. For example, our beautiful continent and its natural resources are being exploited by foreign large companies that we all know it. Another thing I saw is that it's not the WB fault to my opinion its just same issue we as Africans are facing all over which is corruption from the government to begin with. They receive money and they don't tell the populations the truth. All comes back to corruption again. Exporting food while the nation itself needs it first, don't make any sense at all. When are our leaders going to wake up ??? Ethiopian people I'm greeting you all with lots of Love and respect... From your neighbor Somalia...

part i and ii were upsetting and important to watch. for one, it is a shame that filmmaking resources are not more-readily available to African and Black and African diasporic people to tell our stories; similarly to the Black Power Mixtape, i'm glad the story is being told...but there is a narrative violence that occurs when the subjects of a story cannot control all aspects of how a story is told. there are ways technology, lessons and other resources can be made available to people subject to the horrors of colonialism so we can tell our stories. i'm thankful this wasn't as deeply-westernized as it could've been but still, there's sadness when we aren't behind the lens. second, it is a shame that indigenous peoples continue to be forcefully displaced from their land. the world bank, imf and global militaries are massive purveyors of violence and should be ashamed of themselves, but they won't -- the way those white men said, 'there are winners and losers,' is so devastating. how are there losers when our earth is abundant with resources?! there is more than enough crop for people to have their needs met, and this 'scarcity mentality' is present precisely because these capitalists want profit. when it's about money, there Have to be 'winners' and 'losers' and the 'winners' are always scant while the 'losers' are abundant. it is heart-wrenching to realize. it is motivating toward an ends of liberation and freedom from such oppressive forces. we must all incur this responsibility to fight against exploitation and colonialism, especially for those living in western countries. this cannot continue.

The ideal situation would be to train all the farmers in using modern machinery etc and how to get the best from their lands without ruining the soil and they together can grow plenty of of food for their community and to sell the excess to others. The profit obviously going to the local farmers and the community. The profit can improve their living standards. The country could feed all its population and have plenty left over but it needs a radical change in the way the government runs the country. In the meantime the people suffer.

POOR POLICIES IN AFRICAN GVTS The problem with Africa is that we sometimes call for foreign investors, yet don't realize that all they harvest is again taken back to their markets. What's the essence of calling for a an investor in agriculture in hope of eradicating hunger and and yet all his harvest is taken to Europe or America where you will in the end go to buy the same food he harvested on your land. In the end we remain with the famine and spend the little obtained taxes buying food at a high price. Forest cleared, more drought coming in the next centuries, more famine..

I have Lakota Sioux blood and although I have not lived that struggle, how many times does it need to be re-lived??? has no one learned in the last 400-500 years??? this breaks my heart that indigenous people are STILL going through this, that the land is STILL going through this. it's not okay. and the only people I ever knew who went to try to help (it's difficult if you're a woman, if not impossible) have fallen to the "dark side" making $$$$$ for the "investors." if I were one of the indigenous here, I would plan a much more extensive demolition of the "farms" ... burn it down. but even then you can never have the forest and everything that lived there back ... and I think that is the biggest wrong of them all because these people were living together with the land not harming anything. what humans do to other sentient creatures and to other humans is disgusting. you cannot utilize a system that is purely quantitative in ways that entail very qualitative measurements - which is exactly the case here. you get "it's not OUR fault, we don't have to pay!" and that's true but only because the wrong metrics are being used. everything cannot come down to $$$ because if it does and when it ALL does, we will ALL be slaves, we will all be exiled, and it won't matter if you have a trillion $$$ because you cannot buy back those lost things. and 2x as many people IN THE COUNTRY have gone starving because of this?!?! when will people learn??? I honestly think the earth is goin to take us all out before we do.... and as painful as that would be, it would certainly be the best for life to exist beyond the world of pathogens / microorganisms.

I just watched a report from 10y ago. Looks like its time to destroy progress again. The story of Africa. Learning is not popular i guess . Teaching modern farming in a ecological way with minimal use of chemicals ( chemicals are expensive) would be helpful. 3:00 flat, no trees. The wind will blow away any good top soil. Running out of water is the next thing . How about a bunch of little deep ponds.

I just watched this and have to comment here just to keep my head from friggen exploding over the fff outrage I feel towards criminals like the World Bank and criminal Govts like the U.S, EU and Ethiopia for allowing these criminal actions against these people who are bothering NOONE and just want to live in piece. But of course the friggen spineless, heartless actions of the criminals I just mentioned are not talked about by the criminal MSM.... TO the World bank , your PBS program or whatever its called is to help less fortunate people, countrys in regards to food, etc and you have the arrogance to make these claims whilst committing these crimes against these people, literallu affecting millions, making refugees out of them while starving them, you sicken me and countries like the U.S and the EU and Eheopia and the UN (United Nations) sit back and allow these attcocities. You ALL need to be indicted and go to jail..... Way too much power given to the world bank, the central banks, the criminal federal reserve, the banks responsible for the collapse of world economies and ruining people's (the 99%) lives while the Elite -1%- go on benefiting from all the pain and suffering being cause DISGUSTS me. The World should be outraged over this, but like when 9/11 occured not much outraged.. Humanity if it doesnt change soon will be doomed ...... I could go on and on but I wont, I suspect most people dont give a crap , which is another topic for another day.... To the people of Ethiopia I'm truely sorry for how your being treated, but God the father of Jesus Christ is aware of this and these will be judgement for these crimes one day....

michael sabella May I suggest that the seventh day sabbath created in the garden of eden blessed and honored by Jesus Himself is the seal of God. That sun day worship has pagan roots and is satans attempt to usurp worship due only to our Creator. Sun day laws will soon be passed in America and this truth will go round our world then sun day worship will become the test for the “ mark” of the beast. The day we rest will have eternal rewards.

This problem in Ethiopia looks a lot like the problem China faced a generation ago. If you have lots of villages and small plots scattered everywhere the land is only productive enough to feed the local population and a little left over to sell. And as the population grows the younger generation inherits less and less per person. Without other resources how will the country advance?

does that justify the forceful eviction, rape and murder of minorities by the government??? huh?? Ethiopia is not china mate. they are not 1 billion people and they have vast arable land. they have resources too mate. Natural gas for one and so many other untapped potential. dont bring your narrow minded ignorance on the country advancement table. By the way how is selling land to other foreign countries supposed to contribute to the contries advancement.

the farmers are subsistence farmers. far from feeding the country, they cant feed even themselves (as of now). so the choice is (a) have large investors who can get the food security right. The complaint about exporting basmati rice is not tenable. You can export high quality stuff and use the money to import what you need. Compensate for the land. (b) invest and train the farmers to become commercial. This requires lot of time, lot of r&d development, lot of outreach but it can be done. In the interim years you will face famine and food imports. The choice has to be made between the two. The Utopian idea that foreigners will make massive investments while the land is owned an farmed by locals is simply silly.
