As much as everyone hated Gene Deitch's version of Tom and Jerry but everyone love his work like Popeye, Munro, and so on, he's still one of the most underrated animators in history. (RIP Gene Deitch 1924 - 2020)

I grew up with the Gene Deitch animation for Tom and Jerry since Boomerang back in 2004 and I didn’t mind it much and it was okay. Not as subpar as the Chuck Jones version. The animation is decent and even the sound effects is not as good as the original, but still gives us laughs to some highlights. The music is okay but not a masterpiece as the original, but it questions why they use the original Tom and Jerry theme- the version straight from one specific episode called “Jerry’s Cousin.” Speaking of episodes, I have a few episodes that are my favorite are Switchin Kitten, Down and Outing, Mouse into Space, Dicky Moe, and even Carmen Get It. Overall, Deitch version is not as bad as everyone says in comparison with the Chuck Jones version. But we know what is the absolute WORST animated Tom and Jerry goes to. You know what I mean. Anyways, not a bad version after seeing for 10 years, I got used to it.

I always found the Deitch cartoons frightening. The echoes in the sound, the human, non-cartoony voices coming from Tom and other animals, the trippy, drug-like background music, the erratic movementes of the characters, like you would never know what they would do next. Creepy.

@BEST CARTOONS KZread Actually, The 1980s Tom and Jerry Comedy Show had absolutely zero involvement from any of its original creators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera nor anyone who had worked on the original Hanna-Barbera era Tom and Jerry theatrical shorts - instead its those idiots and hacks over at Filmation who worked on The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show since back in 1980 MGM outsourced production of that show to Filmation Associates.

Deitch was working with a team from Czechoslovakia who never saw the show, so it was hard for them to animate Tom and Jerry. A lot of the poses were drawn by Deitch himself and the reason the animation was choppy was due to the budget and the way the Czechs drew the cartoon. The stories were also done by some Czechs as well as the SFX. Overall I wouldnt say it was bad, it was unique, but certainly not good. Plus to top it off, Deitch wasnt even a fan of Tom and Jerry (due to, as you said, violence and the racism, which is why he had that new owner), but was picked to work on it. If you wanna talk about Bad Tom and Jerry's, go to the Tom and Jerry Comedy Show.

There was one really weird era of T&J that I just can’t fathom what to search to find it. It was even worse than Deitch. They reused the exact same animation loops and sound effects in every single episode, and the animation was stilted and uncanny. I only ever saw two shorts but I’m glad I never saw more. UPDATE: After some digging I’ve deduced this was “The Tom And Jerry Comedy Show” from 1980-1982.

I can understand Deitch's comment on 1960's animation because it was the point where cartoons had to start airing on TV and had to deal with working with a lower budget, heck even Hanna Barbera had issues when transitioning to the 60's. But I still find his hatred for the violence in Tom & Jerry to be very hypocritical.

You did not need to make a 12-minute video, you could just say ‘I don’t know anything about Eastern European animation style’ and convey the same basic information. Deitch’s plots and animations were consistently improving towards the end of the season and they were getting a hang on how to use sound effects. Despite its low budget the show was a success and if it were given a chance two second season we would shave one of the best seasons of the series. But aside from weak plots and production, those who find Deitch’s T&J also complain about chaotic, eery, almost sinister aura. As a medium, animation contains great possibilities, but it seems to me that American (neat, cute, simple, easy on the eye) style is so entrenched in people’s minds that they were/are not willing to explore these possibilities. Same holds for T&J purists; HannaBarbera style character relations, environment, general aura light-heartedness is so entrenched in their mind that they cannot conceive other possibilities

Just because you don't like "The Tom and Jerry Show (1975)" doesn't means that's the worst, many people liked it, myself included. Now, why do you hate The Tom and Jerry Show (1975)? And don't tell me that the reason is because they are friends and they don't chase and fight each other like before, in fact, many of the last episodes of the ORIGINAL Tom and Jerry like Busy Buddies, Down Beat Bear, Blue Cat Blues, Happy Go Ducky and Tot Watchers, they were friends already and there weren't many persecutions.

I used to look out for them specifically (identifying them by the sound effects). The mad scientist episode was actually one of my favorites. The animation does look sloppy now that I look at it, but I'd say it's still pretty fun to watch because this era puts Tom and Jerry in different situations. They are not limited to a house and the same old mouse door in the wall. They are not limited by the number of characters. I'd say this era was more story/environment driven than "action" driven. Though, I agree Tom is being harassed quite often and it might not be appropriate for children.

I wouldn't say the Gene episodes are bad, but still not that good. They were probably trying to come up with unique sound effects. I thought they somewhat interesting, but not that good. Animation is super choppy, I don't think they did a good job hiring animators. The movement of the characters are sometimes out of place to where it looks like they just pop around everywhere. What I hate the most about this era are the way people treat Tom, not just the owner, but also the musician from the orchestra episode, and maybe the captain from Dicky Moe, idk I didn't think he was that bad, but yeah. Tom is basically just a huge punching bag. Pretty much every episode he gets tortured at the end of them, even when he doesn't deserve it. Long story short, it feels like this era heavily relies on the violence, and to me it's way more brutal than the other two eras. I didn't laugh once when watching these episodes, and it lacks the point of the show itself.

Gene Deitch blaming 1960s era animation was actually valid imo. The 1960s is when television animation was just becoming a thing, and due to how much cheaper it was to make television cartoons as opposed to theatrical series like Looney Tunes and the original Tom and Jerry, I’m assuming that theatrical cartoons got their budgets sliced in half by the big studios around the time. Like look at some of the theatrical cartoons from the 1960s. Stuff like the DePatie Freleng Looney Tunes and Pink Panther shorts don’t look nearly as fluid as the theatrical shorts from the decades prior. So I think Gene was right when he said that.

Actually, I preferred the Gene Deitch shorts over the Chuck Jones shorts ...the look of the characters, the music ..Like, my fav Gene Deitch short was when Tom was outside the apartment building, freezing, and he sent Jerry a bottled message to "rescue" him ...Tom betrays him, and Jerry comes back to haunt Tom, pretending to be a ghost ...I liked the design, the music, the story ..but I guess that's just me, reppin' Gen X

Why do you hate the Chuck Jones era though? I personally found it to be almost as amazing as the original Hanna-Barbera era. I can respect your opinion on them but could you please at least give a reason? Also, about the quote at 9:28, Deitch actually meant the early 1960s were the beginning of his presence in the US, so he and his animators weren't too familiar with the original Tom and Jerry shorts, and he just pointed out as a side note that it was "over a half-century ago as [he wrote] this". Plus, the 1960s was a time when television was becoming more popular and people weren't using big budgets like they did for theatrical cartoons, so that's why animation at the time was worse than even 1940s animation. It wasn't until around the 1970s/80s that TV cartoons started to use bigger budgets and become smooth again. So the Chuck Jones Tom and Jerry was honestly impressive for its time.
