I feel like if I invested in this keyboard, my life would inevitably spiral out of control. I'd fall into a vicious chase of ergonomic custom keyboard perfection. 6 months later I''d be under a bridge somewhere, frantically swapping key switches to scratch that itch that I'll never quite be able to reach.

Haha this seems spot on. The more you think of it thought, the more it seems like erganomic keyboards are the way that keyboard always should have been. That + dvorak and an erganomic mouse seems like erganoimc nirvana.

270 USD for the base "ergonomic keyboard" but in order to be FULLY ergonomic you have to shell another 50 USD on top? Damn even keyboards are getting DLCs nowadays.

Nope, because once you stick with a mounting solution you can use them on more than just one machine, unlike these parts which are highly specific and won't work with anything else on the market. Would you sign a contract for a car and later discover that you have to pay for the wheels and the rims separately? It's quite dumb to be honest, but not as much as your comparison though

To be fair you can make your own ErgoDox for less than 200, with tenting and what not. It's not even that hard too. But if you want a turn-key solution, then the price that comes with it is to be expected. Especially for an enthusiast / rare board like this. It's not exactly mainstream stuff.

  • @LucaFiltroMan

    @LucaFiltroMan

I wouldn't exactly call it an "enthusiast product", rather a crappy product with hyper inflated price tag... Enthusiast grade keyboards are a tier lower in price and come with more features. But I guess as long as some few people are happy to be milked more than 300 USD, everyone else has to adapt and get bent over, right?

That default backspace mapping makes perfect sense to me. It’s actually how I’ve remapped my MacBook keyboard. Caps lock is redundant in my opinion. Getting used to it there means you can use that same remapping on any standard keyboard and it’s the single best remapping I think anyone can do. I also have one other remapping from the strange symbol key below Escape on the touchbar, which I of course remap to escape. I would probably remap that key anyway now I’m used to it, even if I had a physical escape key because the escape key is just way too far away otherwise.

Wow. Look great for a hand cam on stream. As an artist, I can see using one of the keyboards individually for dedicated switches and macros just for the programs I use. I'd say...the only thing that would knock it out of the park, in the gamer sense, include a dedicated thumbstick for movement in place of WASD. It'd be a neat touch to have more precise analog movement like the left thumbstick on a game controller in combo with your existing mouse.

I also have one of them and it's probably my favorite KB. However, to be fair, I do sometimes use others... the thing is, those other boards are an excellent Model M or ZSA's other offering, the Planck EZ (super portable! So much room for activities on your work desk!). The Dox EZ is peerless. Once you're used to it, it'll be a daily driver or in your top three. Just gotta get over that initial hump. Also, yeah it's not for just anyone. If you're not writing or programming or something like that a lot, then that price is maybe too steep.

That is one sexy keyboard. RGB underglow, different switches for different folks, more customization than you can shake a stick at, and more ergonomic than Linus' cats. Any mention of the Ergodox Infinity? I believe that one comes with per-key RGB. Plus, there are a ton of options for third-party cables for the Ergodox. Some are braided, some are coiled, some are in really nice colours, and they're all better than the stock ones.

so cool to see soo much tech sold by adafruit in this keyboard, neopixels, attiny, would love to see the inards. its time to make the janky version with a 3d printer to make the frame. and with all the projectors you got, use one of the cheaps ones to swap the led module with a uv one. i just got my own hence the idea. i am working on making an sls printer kind of deal. any way, that can give you the higher quality stuff you will see from formlabs but with square pixels. have to use a laptop or something to change output to monochromatic, get some resins, etc.

I bought a set of the wrist rests when I picked my ergodox ez years ago. I used them exactly once before they went into my desk drawer, never to see the light of day again. For me, suspending my wrists over the the desk surface is much more natural as I've done it with every keyboard I've ever owned. I've been through 11 layout iterations myself, overall for me this is the best keyboard on the market by a long shot.

The writing on the cable is the rating of the wire itself, not the model number for some generic part. I always prefer when it’s included as it lets me know what I’m dealing with and it’s usually a somewhat reliable way to judge it’s quality (so long as it’s not exaggerated). In my personal opinion this makes it a benefit, especially seeing that it’s not all that visible. The connectors are absolute rubbish though, you got that spot on.

I own two. One is a Ergodox EZ with tilt legs. The other is a self-build from a Massdrop order (super fun to build your own). One as brown switches for office use. The other has blue "clicky" switches for home use. The absolute best keyboard I've ever owned - and I've owed a lot of keyboard is my time. The support for the Ergodox EZ is also brilliant. A year after I had it, one of the switches intermittently stopped working. I emailed them and without quibble they said they will definitely send me a new replacement. The longest part of the support email discussion was if I wanted to switch to different key switches or stay with the brown ones. :-)

For a start, I type on the Dvorak layout, so the default Qwerty is a no go for me. ;-) The Ergodox EZ website has 1000's of community layouts to browse, clone and customised. My wife attempted to buy me a keyboard for my birthday, shelled out the money, and was going about the order, then was informed that the shipper could end up charging her whatever they wanted in brokerage fees. With no control and having been hit with brokerage fees of over $100 in the past she decided to cancel the order. The problem came that they didn't cancel the order, they sent back a payment. For any international buyer, this means losing ~$40 in fees. If they just cancelled the payment the fees don't accumulate. If that wasn't enough they proceeded to belittle and throw insults at my wife when she questioned their practice. If this was just an employee it would be one thing, but the owner also took time to send a message indicating their lack of care. Since then I made my own for half the price. Save some money, buy the parts get someone to put it together.

The center had all the standard insert, home etc. plus16 or 18 macro keys, and the left and right side were cupped like the Kinesis boards with a small space inbetween to reduce elbow strain. Each sides pairs magneticly closed together and then both sides would be stood on their ends with the hole with the keys showing facing up and then the middle piece slides in to lock and then it had a nylon strap on the back of that section. Its like razors..eventually someone will build a keyboard which is just one button and you buy 104 of them and 103 tiny cables to put them together

Good to know, that you can swap swtiches. For someone who doesn't use his keyboard as a weapon of mass desctruction the slide in overall build quiality from this feature is not important. I seriously consider to buy one, or half or ergodox in the future. So i really hoped that at least you could provide some info on usability and ergonomics of this 6 button thumb cluster. Which is the most controversial part of whole design.

Standard keyboard layouts are silly. Your thumb has lots of freedom to move. It can easily press lots of different keys, if the keys are nearby for it to press: just look at any gamepad. It's very good at operating modifier keys like Shift, Ctrl, Alt and others: hold down the modifier with the thumb of one hand while pressing the modified key with the other. But for that to work properly, the modifier keys need to be mirrored on both sides. Now look at a standard keyboard. There are probably two keys within easy reach of each thumb. Worse, one of them is the spacebar, and it's shared between both hands. Space is not a modifier, so the space key doesn't need to be shared any more than you need the ability to type E with either hand. (Actually, having E on either hand might even make some kind of sense as part of some fairly extreme typing-speed layout, but that's another story.) So by not splitting the spacebar the layout is effectively wasting a whole key that could be used for something else. On standard ANSI (US) layouts you only have *one* other thumb input, Alt. European ISO layouts are even worse, because while you have two different thumb modifiers, Alt and AltGr, neither of them is mirrored so they're both broken for touch-typing. Just because it's standard doesn't mean it's not silly. The Ergodox, meanwhile, is bad for two reasons. One is the price, which is justifiable if you have a well-paid job and you type all day, if you want a hot luxury item, or if you have a relevant injury, but is otherwise a pretty silly expenditure. The other is that it still doesn't give you any analogue input for controlling the mouse pointer on the keyboard: no thumbable trackpad, no IBM Trackpoint-style pointing stick or thumbstick. So you'd spend hundreds of dollars and still be flailing your hand back and forth between the mouse and keyboard every time you need to switch between keyboard and pointer actions, which really is silly. The Ultimate Hacking Keyboard ultimatehackingkeyboard.com/ is one board which does better in this respect.

It' s same as ergodox, but has per key backlight and if my calculations are right, you can buy it for 235$(including case, keycaps and e.t.c.) or there is also a pre-built version and it is funny that pre-built version will cost you 225$. So i would reccomend it to you.
