Just a quick question, of all the conquered Countries germany occupied in WW2, Denmark was governed the least. Did the Nazis have any long term plans to eventually reintegrate North Schleswig/South Jutland ?

Originally when the territory was to go back France and UK pushed for Denmark to get both Holstein and Slesvig, but Denmark rather wanted the referendum alongside some other nations i think.

Ty for covering the topic. My family are danes from Slesvig originally. My Great-great-grandfather was a farmer who served time in the German army, I believe to be eligible to vote, he ended up serving in some kind of royal bodyguard unit in Berlin, apparently selected because of his height and build, which sounds impressive until you realize there where thousands in that part of the army and his job was mostly standing outside of buildings doing not much for several years. We still have a photo of him in his fancy ceremonial uniform and all. He ended up getting conscripted into WW1 with his brothers during the war. His four brothers all died on the eastern front, he himself got wounded fighting on the western front. Just a flesh wound, but the doctors discovered he had a heart condition so he got sent home to Slesvig. He had to go in for regular medical check ups to see if he could possibly he fit for service again, so he use to do this trick of downing tons of coffee and running up and down the stairs of the doctors office before getting checked so his heart would be pounding like crazy to escape getting called up again. Later on he just resorted to bribing the doctor with pork from his farm as the late war food shortages set in. At one point they had some Russian PoWs that were housed at the farm and helped work it.

@@rafanadir6958 probadly like any other Heuer. My great grandfather was Lithuanian, got captured by the Germans, got send to a farm where he worked as one and decided to stay, later inheriting the farm because the couple that lived there went childless and they left it to him and his wife

​@@rafanadir6958 Don't know that much about them tbh. They were from somewhere in the Russian Empire. So could have been any of the different people groups with that nation. They didn't speak any language my family could understand, but they were familiar with agricultural work, so from a rural background presumably. They were housed and fed for the duration of their stay. What happened to them after they left is anyone's guess. They weren't the only people from the Russian Empire my family had come into contact with however. Whilst my grandmother's part of the family came from rural Slesvig, my grandfather was from a working class neighborhood in Copenhagen and the local grocery shop they use to buy everyday goods from was owned by an old Cossack. He had been part of a bodyguard unit for the Russian Imperial family. He had been assigned to protect the Dowager Empress Dagmar, mother of Tsar Nikolas the 2nd, after she fled to Denmark following the fall of the Tsar, he had been part of her retinue fleeing here. After she died he was out of a job, so he opened a small grocery store, even had his old saber hanging up on the wall.

Supposedly GB PM Palmeston said “The Schleswig-Holstein question is so complicated, only three men in Europe have ever understood it. One was Prince Albert, who is dead. The second was a German professor who became mad. I am the third and I have forgotten all about it.” It also features in a great book by George McDonald Fraser. Royal Flash.

A French Officer in WW1 who was responsible for handling the prisoners of war on the Western Front, had heard of the situation with the Danish minority in Northern Germany, i.e. Schleswig-Holstein, and how Danish men were ordered to fight for Germany against their will. As such, he ordered that any prisoner of war who could prove they were a part of the Danish minority in Northern Germany, would receive better treatment. A lot of Danish soldiers had befriended a lot of other German soldiers. As such, they tried their best to come up with cover stories for their German friends, so that they, too, could receive better treatment as prisoners of war.

Good video. Some more things you could have mentioned are: How domestic politics and nationalism actually drove the decisions of Denmark in 1864 where it was hoped that our military could stop the armies of Prussia and Austria at Dannevirke, the old defensive line across now-Germany which was bypassed due to the freezing of swamps in the winter of 1864, and the hope that countries like England and Sweden would support us. Moreover, I think that it would've been good to mention the Easter Crisis of 1920, where our king replaced the Danish government with a conservative one, as the king wanted more land returned to Denmark than the plebicide would dictate. The attempt failed due to domestic protests over democracy and our constitution was amended to get rid of this old, unused monarchical power to replace governments. The mythical role of 1864 in the Danish national identity can still be felt very strongly today, as it marked Denmark's absolute decline in terms of power and foreign policy, leading to a long-held policy of neutrality and an inwards, romantic and nationalist focus and culture which is reflected in the arts.

"The attempt failed due to domestic protests over democracy and our constitution was amended to get rid of this old, unused monarchical power to replace governments." It wasn't. The constitution wasn't changed until 1953, and the monarch still has power to replace a government now (now the new government just has to have the approval of parliament, unlike in 1920). Indeed, every government is still legally appointed by the monarch. King Christian had the exact same powers in 1940 as he did in 1920, and he did indeed use those powers after the Easter Crisis. He demanded the resignation of the foreign minister, P. Munch, after the German invasion in 1940, as he held Munch responsible for the German occupation. He was also approached in October of 1940 by a group called Højgaardkredsen with a request to replace Stauning with a new government headed by his cousin, Prince Axel. The King, however, refused. The Easter Crisis was resolved with a compromise, and most people actually supported the King - as can be seen in the April 1920 election. The pro-King parties (Venstre, Konservative and several smaller parties) won 60% of the vote, while Radikale Venstre was slaughtered. In fact, the situation was much more dangerous for the protestors and the Social Democrats. The demonstrators were lucky that the King backed down, and that he didn't listen to Venstre's powerful leader, I. C. Christensen, who wanted to march battalions of soldiers into Copenhagen with fixed bayonets.

@@tripleh327 Denmark and Sweden were good friends in the middle of the 1800s, and the Swedish king had in fact promised that he would send 30.000 men to the support of Denmark. The Swedes, however, broke this promise, as the Swedish king had made the promise without consulting his parliament.

Some German nationalists even claimed the entirity of Denmark based on the period from 1332-1340, when a few German dukes (well, from Holstein so it's complicated) held tax rights in the entirity of the countries. Bismarck himself though thought this was a crazy claim.

My family was deported from our ancestral farm in south Slesvig when the prussians took over in about 1865. My grand father who was born in 1938 still grew up hating germans.

Great and informative video! And props for the editing to my boy Freddy. One thing I think would have been interesting to add, was that the ceding of North Schleswig, to Denmark, was the only part, of the Treaty of Versailles, that the Third Reich didn't reject. As the video currently stands I feel like the jump from WW1 to 1955 is a bit abrupt. Other than that amazing job!

In the 19th century nationalism was a lot more uncomplicated. Generally whatever language a person spoke in would be considered his nationality. As an example this is seen in many German songs of the time

No, all lingering tensions were solved by the Bonn-Copenhagen Treaty since it garuanteed the rights of both minorities and these days with the EU it's not like it really matters since you can just travel back and forth as you like. Though during the pandemic there were some issues since Denmark was pretty quick to shut down travel. There are still some organizations but they exist mostly for social reasons and aren't really demanding any change, the Danish one is the most active for historical reasons. Also with the lack of oppression the slow assimilation is starting to happen.

Very good video, except one thing - the amount of desertions to DK during the first world war, wasn't all that high, as many danes wanted to be sure they could keep their citizenship in the german empire, which would allow them to vote for reunification with Denmark.

Since you have so many videos on the Kaiserreich, I have a question for you. What is your opinion about all the Reichsburger drama that is happening right now? Also, about the video, you forgor to say that during WW2, after the invasion of Denmark, Hitler did annex Northern Schleswig into Germany.

You forgot the Frisian minority (Ostfriesland & Nordfriesland)

The border between Denmark and Germany and the border between East Prussia and Polen were the only borders that were (somewhat) drawn in accordance with the wish of the populations as a result of the Versailles Treaty. The Belgium-German border, the French-German border, the Czech-German border, the rest of the Polish-German border and the Lithuanian-German border were all forced upon Germany. At least most people in Eupen-Malmedy, Upper Silesia, West Prussia and Memelland wanted to remain within the German Reich, even if they weren't ethnic Germans. The hypocritical western powers paved the road for the Nazis with the Versailles "peace" Treaty.

This is just a memory from history class but I'm pretty sure the Entante offered Denmark more lands from Germany but Denmark refused due to concerns regarding the large German minority it would create and how it could create future conflicts with Germany. Though I don't remember the exact reasons Denmark refused I do know the reason the Entente offered it was to punish Germany more using the returning land as a cover.

@@respectmathias At the time Denmark had a social democratic government that wanted to continue the neutrality policy and avert future conflict with Germany, as well as maintain good trade relations. There were people in Denmark who wanted to take back all of Slesvig but the majority weren't interested in that failed policy. Though also at the time it was somewhat unheard of to split a region in half like this. Part of the reason there was a conflict in the first place was because no one had considered just splitting Slesvig, so it either had to be all of it or nothing. The Danish government was treading new ground by demanding a referendrum to decide where the border would go.

I'm anpart of the danish minority in Germany and hopefully we can reunite with Denmark one time. We don't wave the danish flag without a reason every day

One interesting thing is that in Southern Jutland there was also a Friesian minority (which still exists with their own dialect(s) to this day). As far as I gathered from my family from the region most of these were pro-Danish at the time.

mmh, I doubt that, since almost all Frisians voted to remain in Germany in the 1920 plebiscites. I think back then, Frisian was seen as a German dialect?

@@onurbschrednei4569 I was told that it was only in a few hamlets where Frisians were in a majority, with Germans in the bigger towns there. But of course this comes anecdotal albeit from a Frisian family-member who is now long dead. There is probably a bit of bias from the perspective of having had to move north.

@@ejnarsorensen2920 That's possible, although the islands were definitely still majority Frisian and they voted "remain" in 1920, probably because at the end of the day they didn't speak danish as a mothertongue. I could imagine them being pro-danish in the 1860s. Its cool that you have family connections to this! Did your family member move to Denmark right after the plebiscite?

Great Video! I wholehartedly agree with all points you made! It is shameful how the idiots in charge in Berlin totally screwed up agreed upon terms in the Prague treaty! For that I can only apologise to my Danish brothers and sisters! However a point that you glossed over to quickly in my opinion is the votes after the second world war. A sizeable portion of the northern voting zone voted to unify with germany all along the southern border but because that zone had to vote on block the borders were drawn to disadvantage Germany and hurt future relations between Denmark and Germany. Admiting all the mistakes Germany made here, we should also be proud enough to admit that there were some mistakes made by Denmark regarding this vote. Great Video as always!

You're right, the vote was heavily skewed in favour of Denmark. Sonderburg and Tondern for example voted overwhelmingly to stay with Germany but it is what it is :)

it is mojn in danish, if you are not a part of the danish minority that speaks alot of german.. many danes dident like spaeking german, so it bacame mojn.. finland also uses it (moi) it probetly comes from the german words "Guten Morgen", but no one knows another theory is from the dutch words "mojn dag"

Werid how different danish and german are really, because german language was vastly different from babaria to hannover, shoudnt south danish be more similar to the language in lubeck? Making integration not a problem? Is werid, i always thought of europe as the person from village A can speak with person from village B that can speak to person from village C, but if a person from village A met someone from village C they wont understand each other. Actually the languages used to be very simular. If you compare the Low German languages with the southern Jutland language they were very similar before nationalism. The reason neither of them can understand each other today is because Low German was killed by High German through a long process since the Reformation (because the protestant Bible was written in high German) and also through national enforcement. The southern Jutland language was killed by the Danish romanticism and also national enforcement. Even if we take a person today who speaks Sønderjysk and Plattdeutsch they won't be able to speak with each other due to years of assimilation with their national languages. Keep in mind this is a surface level explanation, we are talking about over a hundred years of assimilation.

Most danes do speak German and both danes and germans tend to speak English so it's not a problem in practice. Danish and German do share a lot of words so that makes learning it somewhat easier for Danes.

Around that time, german was seen as the finer language. Richer people and judges and officers only spoke german, while the working farmers spoke danish. This was used to oppress the danish lower class.

Good video, but was there nothing to mention about the the low Germans and north frisians? They did and still do make up a minority in that area, more so then than now.

Sadly the story of Low German being assimilated into High German is offen forgotten in the idea of a Deutschland. People forget that the original idea of Deutschland also included the Netherlands, Belgium and so on.

"Had Germany not angered the Danish minority, they probably would have assimilated over time." They didn't have time by 1894. Their empire ended just 24 years later. You can't assimilate a region into a nation in 24 years unless you commit outright genocide.

You are doing a video on the history of Schleswig Hollstein and leave out all the important pre-history why SH was rules by the danish king and what contractual obligations the Danish king had with SH and the the holy roman empire and it following states. A quick look on Wiki would already be enough to understanding the importance for telling the story. Sad

Tag. Ich stimme ihnen zu, dass der Vertrag (um es nett zu sagen) kompletter müll und als demütigung gedacht war, welcher mehr probleme verursacht als gelöst hat. Allerdings finde ich nicht, dass er sich im video zu sehr auf die seite der dänen gestellt hat. Außerdem hat Dänemark damals selber gesagt, dass die menge an land die sie erhalten sollten zu viel wäre. Und es ist halt nunmal leider so, dass Deutschland damals sehr offensiv gegen minderheiten vorgegangen ist, was wir dann später bei der vertreibung der Ost- und Sudeten deutschen selber spüren durften. Was spielt denn ein Vertrag vor 100 Jahren noch eine Rolle? Die "Grenze" von 1920 ist inzwischen wieder kompletter nichtssagend geworden. Mittlerweile wollen auch immer mehr Deutsche in Sydslesvig lieber wieder zu Dänemark gehören als zu Deutschland

@@danishcommander4dk Genau da ist ja das Problem das Schleswig direkt und unter Lehenschaft dänische war und Holstein zwar unter direkter Herrschaft in Personal Union mit Dänemark gebunden aber unter dem deutschen Universal Reich des Mittelalters blieb. Mit Abschaffung des Feudalen und der Erstellung absoluter und dan moderner staatlichen Konstrukte fällt das Land hier wie zum Beispiel Posen aus dem Historischen in den Kulturellen Anspruch zurück.

Especillay in comparison to the treatment of minorities in France (Germans in Elsass-Lothringen, Corse), in the UK (Irish, Welsh and Scotish which culture and language has been annihilated) or Russia. Historisk talt giver det mere mening at sige Danmark til Dannevirke, da det er et område der har været en del af Danmark siden Vikingetiden til de Slesvigske krige. Det land som er over Dannevirke er kommet ind i Kongeriget via arv dvs. personlig union og er dermed ikke legitimt dansk land. Hvis vi skulle følge logikken at land der er blevet arvet af kongehuset er en del af nationen så ville Hanover være Engelsk.

One kinda tragic outcome of this is that more Danes died in WWI fighting for the German Empire than did in the war of 1864 fighting for their own country. It's made even weirder by Denmark being neutral in WWI.

Denmark should have accepted Slesvig after the allies tried giving it to the Danes, after ww1 and again after ww2

Such an ideal way of settling disputed border after wars an conflicts: A referendum where each municipality counts. Could this be done in Ukraine?

According to Putin they already have. That was his excuse for annexing the four oblasts anyway. He *forgot* there already was a referendum on the matter in 1991.

The only reason it worked here was because Germany had just been defeated in a war and as such was at the mercy of the victors and had to follow the rules. That can't really work in Ukraine when there's no one forcing Russia to hold fair and free elections, and no one really can since Russia has nukes. Even so the entire premise for such a referendum is that the population is representative, but Russia has been forcibly relocating the population, even in Slesvig that was somewhat at play since Danish cities like Flensborg were lost but it was at least not quite as devestating.

South Slesvig should be Danish once again. Denmark to the Eider River!

if the bordershops are not there, no danes would visit anyway.. decides we dont wont more german people in denmark. they have another policy then the rest of europe when it comes to war, work and polution and the culture, lets just keep that on the other side of the border.. Germans have a bad habbit of thinking bad ideas are great, every time we have a war in europe they are pretty much on the other side of the rest of europe. and their greed often hurts the rest of europe when its war time

Complicated the content of your video, controversial and contains detalistics wrongs.

This is not bad, but there are a few annoying things. Firstly, you keep taking away an image or a map as soon as you put it up. It is very difficult to enjoy or even understand the significance of the image or map if you take it away so soon. Secondly, why are you always showing this ugly image of a sea cow? It is a bit like a Chinese communist propaganda film constantly showing Mao mao man even though he had nothing to do with the story. I know that you are trying to be amusing as well as informative, but it is working against you. Lastly, and most importantly, you have completely left out the Frisians. This is a typical Danish ploy in that they cannot stand the Frisians and despise them. Therefore the Frisians sided with the Germans and tipped the balance in favour of union with Germany. I know this for a fact, as I lived in Wyk and although there were some pleasant Danes here and there, they still looked down on the Frisians.

They, when they rule they want to Leave EU restrict schengen area and most possibly Leave NATO, so they'll do Everything to decline foreigners or their demands and the german goverment in general that is currently ruling will not outright give something over for free or when it was not fought for, they didn't allow the french to own the Saarland why wouldn't they do the same to you danes?
