‘81 is definitely what I’d consider peak era for them, creatively speaking. They were really on a roll at this time. Commercially speaking, it was a terrible time for them. LOTS of record label woes and management problems.
I think that artistically this was a good period for the band.. after the Black Album they were preparing Strawberries that remains one of their greatest and really underrated record.. One of this days I'll write a story about how I missed their concert at the London Lyceum in the same July this very nice video was recorded.. what a big regret!

Yes, this is right in the middle of their peak era. Strawberries is also my favorite album. In my opinion they never really reached those heights again afterwards (creatively speaking). This captures them at a time when they were at the top of their game. It should also be mentioned that 1981 was when they released the brilliant “Friday The 13th” EP. This was right about the time I first started really getting into them. The stuff they were releasing back then was a real breath of fresh air, at a time when punk was breaking off into all these regimented factions (hardcore, post punk, etc) that all kind of sounded and looked the same. The Damned remained unique and fresh.
Nice one, thanks! This is in the middle of my favourite Damned period (machine gun to strawberries) it was such a creative time for them. Sure I love the earlier stuff too but for me this is what I listen to the most now.

Glad you enjoyed this Damned video Simon.
As much as I love Brian James this is my favourite damned line up , thanks for posting 😁
Yes love it .. THE D A M N E D .lady's and gentlemen .. how do.😊
Much better sound quality here than other uploads I’ve seen (from this same broadcast). Thanks for putting this up. You can really hear Paul’s bass, which is a good thing. They were at the peak of their powers at this time.

@@ScottishTeeVeetrue. They (the suits) didn’t know how to “package” and sell them as a band really yet. Later eras it got easier for them. But luckily The Damned is one of the very few bands who’s pretty much whole discography is worth a listen and great songs throughout. Always was/is a consistent band. From day 1 to more presently
Best version I ve ever seen❤

4:53 rat has to be one of the best head bangers I've seen ha !
Love the local touch and the genuine commercial backdrops of the time, being a native Finnish myself. I can't verify if this recording was the work of the national broadcasting company (YLE) or some local cable operator (possibly in Helsinki area). Presumably the first, since the announcer's wording sounds so awkward. Nevertheless, it's a gem!

Thanks for watching and commenting. I always wondered which station broadcast this. By 1986, I was trading music videos with two people in Finland, they had no idea who broadcast The Damned show and both took copies from me.

Apparently it was broadcasted by TV2 (YLE) as the announcer says in the end that they have a lot of other material from the festival and they will broadcast more "here on tv2 during autumn".
Beautiful Dave....!! Strange singer..litlle prince of Darkness.!

He still very much is. Listen to his recent recordings with Professor & The Madman (which also includes Paul Gray on bass) for proof.

As of today Feb 20, 2023, this is their same current front lineup with Paul Gray on bass. But unfortunately Rat isn't drumming permanently with them anymore.

Maybe the good Captain was imbibing in some salmiakki-infused vodka?
Lots of "punk" energy! This was over 35 years before I saw them pre-Covid in Fort Lauderdale. They actually sound tighter and more polished back in 2019 than they do here. Lots of "out of tune instruments and vocal harmonies during this performance. Like a fine wine, Dave aged and matured into one of the finest vocalists and performers to come out of that era, and the same goes for the rest of the band. I never got the chance to see the original lineup live, but hopefully I will during this year's tour. Long live The Damned!
This is so great!!!! Never seen this!! Thanks for posting!!!

It’s very refreshing when you are writing punky gothy songs in your dark basement flat. Especially on ice.

Agreed, it would be great if it was the full show, but this is all that exists.
The Damned were 1 of the 2 BIGGEST PuNk bands till B James left & Captain thought is Jimmy Hendrix. I don't know if that's the case of split up, i never read gossips but the bottom line is that it was 2 good 2 be true, like all best bands, I don't know maybe music industry's against any band that is authentic & does what it likes. Maybe? ? Anyway nothing's changed since always really. 🎂🎂🎂

Waiting for the Blackout, Lively Arts, Hit or Miss, three throw away fillers.
Great plating but the tuning of the bass is way flat.
