Thanks for video. I am just starting at a school that uses Daily 5. Understand it a lot more after this video!

I've always struggled with centers etc, and every year I feel like I'm reinventing the wheel. I've heard about the Daily 5 but never really explored it's nuts and bolts, and honestly, I think your video has sold me, especially when you said "The whole point of Daily 5 is to get those centers OUT of the classroom". I will absolutely take your advice on the books first, and then subscribe to the website for about 3 months once we get closer to August. Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for taking the time to break it down. I have ordered my book and look forward to reading it. Though I have the basic idea of it because I have been a TA for years, having the whole perspective of it and how to run it myself is a whole other thing. LOVE the video!! Last year, I did try the Daily 5. I feel like I can improve upon that this year. Also, our district bought us laptops to use instead of desktops last year and I purchased a subscription to the ccPensieve. The kids loved it and felt VERY important when we made our appointments and their name was put on my computer calendar. LOL Thanks so much for making this!

Great video, I'm an Australian preservice teacher, in my last 2 months of my final Internship. I had never heard of daily 5 before, I don't think its that big in Australia but I like the sound of it as an alternative to literacy groups/ guided reading. Loving your videos and advice. ***** Hey Elese just saw your comment. I am a first year grad in Melbourne and my school does the Daily 5. I was sceptical when I first started but I honestly prefer it so much to guided reading, which I did for my 3 placements.

I am so happy that you shared this info on Daily 5! I am a 5th grade teacher and can relate to many of the challenges you mentioned but I would like to do this program. I have 1.5 hours for reading/writing each day and would love to see how you have modified the program to your needs.

My first year doing Daily 5 I did on my own too after just reading the books. It's an easy program to implement but it is still nice to have help. I made several mistakes the first year but I got better and better each passing year.

sevsgurl Thank you! I have to admit I never thought I would hit 1,000 subscribers in just 4 months. I was honestly hoping to have just a couple of hundred by the end of the year. So it was a big surprise when I woke up this morning and saw that number. Plus, I have been blessed with almost 100% positive support from everyone. Feeling very grateful.

I've been wanting to do Daily 5 for a couple of years now. I bought the book and also got my hands on "Daily 5 for Dummies." I loved the idea of having the first and last rotations the same for everyone. I feel like this takes a lot off my plate as far as figuring out how to implement all five rotations. A couple of questions... ~How long do your rotations last once you're in full swing? ~If students finish their work and still have time left over, what do you have them do, or is the rotation geared to last the whole time? ~Do you have a rule that everyone MUST do the other 3 rotations at least once throughout the week? ~I'm of the Madeline Hunter "White Sauce" lesson era, complete with anticipatory sets, all the way through to independent practice. Those lessons can NEVER be 10 minutes long. What does a "mini-lesson" look like in your room? Is there a general flow? Thanks so much for sharing!

Also, did you say how long each round is? I remember the first one you built up to thirty minutes but are the others thirty minutes as well?

Thank you for sharing ! I was wondering what types of activities are your students involved in during Work on Words. I will be teaching 3rd grade in the upcoming school year. I previously taught 5th grade math. I'm both nervous and excited about this new adventure!

Thank you for sharing! I bought both of these books this summer and have read them twice! One question I have is what do you do for grades? My parents like to see graded work and it seems the the Daily Five is a system that helps you get away from worksheets ! I stumped on what to do to get a sufficient amount of grades in reading without a lot of worksheets to please my parents.

MissAssiduous This is a problem for me too. I wish I had a report card that was a skills list with a + or - system. Instead I have report cards that demand an A.B,C,D,E. I hate our report cards. To get grades I have purchased several books that have reading selections and Q&A based on Common Care skills. I also will occasionally read a story of the anthology and do the selection test that matches that story because you are right, parents want to see a pencil paper grade to justify why their child got the grade they did. I also so a participation grade and even use the DRA-2's to generate a grade. Has the child made progress or are they stagnant.

Wonderful introduction for a teacher like me who does not know this program. My school is working with the Teacher College and I wonder if I could adjust some of your wonderful ideas to TC. My biggest concern is based on the fact we should start with 3-5 minutes rounds of independent reading, and then make the kids come back. It would interfere with my Small Group session. Do you have any suggestion? Thank you so much!

I was wondering....you mentioned that the sisters give suggestions on what to do with students who do not have enough stamina. They recommend you make a tool bag for these students. It can contain foam blocks, pipe cleaners, a squeeze ball and a sand timer. You want a bag of quiet items. When the child begins to feel fidgety they can take a tool out of their bag and play for a minute. Then they put the tool away and get back to work.

Great video! Even as a high school math teacher a lot of this stuff is really helpful! I can't believe you have taught for that long, you barely look 35! And congratulations on hitting 1k!

I am a new Teacher! I bought the Daily 5 book and I have been thinking about using it in my classroom this coming year. I am wondering where do you get the work for 'word work'? Also is this the only language program you use or do you do class novel studies and other language activities? Do you do daily 5 for the whole year or just part of the year? Even though I am a veteran teacher, like you I never want to become a Dinosaur Teacher. Change is good. Change keeps us fresh and ever growing. I have been teaching for 20 years and sometimes I still feel like I have so much still to learn.

Hi! I was wondering how you organized which focus lessons to do in a particular day. Do you have a year long guide and go from what students need ? I have both books but find it hard to organize which focus lesson to use and when.

Jenai Om The first 6 weeks I use the focus lessons presented in the books from the authors. After that I just use the cafe menu sheet to make sure that I cover them all through he course of the year. I also use the common core for 4th grade to make sure I am meeting the standards. I don't have a specific plan of do this first, then this, and next this. I just introduce them in any order making sure they all get covered. Also, you teacher's manual from whatever reading series you are using can also serve as a help. Reading series my suck for the kids because the anthologies fail to meet all the children's needs, but the teacher's manuals are often great for teachers because their is an order of instruction that is user friendly for teachers. I have the program Making Meaning in my district which I was able to merge with Daily 5 perfectly. So really I introduce strategies in the order presented in that manual but tweak them as needed to fit the Daily 5.

Are you self-contained? Meaning, do you teach other subjects to your students? If so, how much time does the daily 5 take away from your "day"? I may have missed this from your video.

Gustavo Gomez I am self contained and responsible for all subjects. My Daily 5 block is two hours long. I plan on doing a video explaining how I schedule my day. This seems to be a question several people have.

This was very helpful! I will be teaching 4th grade next year for the first time. I have taught for 14 years at the k, 1 level and need a lot of help getting adjusted to older kids. Do you have an email for questions?

Tina, a couple of questions.........I understand the first round and last round. Do you work it more like Daily 3 since round 2 is the only choice for the day? So during the first round you are conferencing individually with students, but during round 2 of choice and round 3 of work on writing you are running guided reading groups? I will have 36 kids to start with. I'm a bit worried about how often I'll be able to see my guided reading groups.

I don't do guided reading groups in the traditional sense, where are 4 to 5 kids are reading the same little book. I mostly meet with my 4th graders one on one. When I do pull a group it is a strategy group where I model to them using a text the skill they need. Then real quick I have them show it back to me and then send them on their way. I do this during all three rounds. I really only pull a group once or twice a week when I see that several students need the same skill.

Thanks for getting back to me. So do you teach a reading curriculum whole group? Our district is adopting a new reading curriculum which will lend itself to implementing Daily 5 (or 3) so I can work with the guided groups. I know the groups will be fluid.

Great video, my question....How do you fit in your State Standards or Common Core and how the district wants all the grade levels to be teaching the same thing on the same day in each subject? What aif you want to follow Daily 5 and the others do not?

carol perks I am very lucky that my district does not mandate that each teacher teach the same stuff on the same day. That would drive me crazy. In my building there are really only three of us who are doing a true Daily 5. A couple others are just getting a feel for Daily 5 and several want nothing to do with it. As for covering the common core, most of my focus lessons come right out of the core. At the end of the day I have to meet those standards just like everyone else.

I have a question. I will only be teaching reading this year. Is it possible to incorporate the Daily 5 into my planning?

Yes! My advice would be to read The Book Whisperer. It is an easy read, done in a day, and her philosophy mirrors the Daily 5 but she is a 6th grade teacher and teaches multiple classes all day. She explains how she manages to get all that read to self into her classes while still covering her curriculum.

Do you only do 3 rounds, one of those being choice? I'm always looking for ways to make my Daily 5 time run more smoothly. Thanks for the video!

Kim B Yes, I only do three rounds. There just isn't enough time in the day to fit in more.

I team teach 4th grade with one other teacher. I am responsible for ELA and Social Studies. I would love to attempt Daily 5 in my classroom but I have no idea where to start or how to make it fit within my time frame. Do you have any suggestions? I have my homeroom class for approximately 2 hours and then my students switch rooms the second class comes in and then I repeat my day. I have about 2.5 hours with each group of students. 40-45 mins I am supposed to dedicate to Social Studies.

+vally1280 You would have to just do two rotations a day instead of three. So 10 minute focus lesson, 20 minute rotation, 10 minute focus lesson, 20 minute rotation, 10 minute focus lesson. Then teach social studies.

I teach a resource room for grade 6 ELA. Do I have to do Daily 5 and Cafe at the same time or could I start Daily 5 and look to implement Cafe next year. Connie

+Connie Clark Daily 5 and Cafe come off initially looking like two different programs, but they really are two halves of the whole. They are designed to mesh. I would read the second book first and then start with both in place.Your focus lessons come right out of the Cafe Menu book.

Thank you for this video :) No centers? Hmm...This is intriguing. I have heard wonderful things about this book, but have not looked in to it at length. Just curious, have you ever heard of Kagan Structures Cooperative Learning?

The kagan structures are used often in daily 5 when students are effectively collaborating. For example, at read with someone where students are sitting EEKK to think-pair-share. The biggest difference is that the daily 5 not only focuses on cooperative learning, but also on students engaging in meaningful independent work. I use both in my classroom.

What you just described sounds an awful lot like the Making Meaning program my district uses. I love think-pair-share. I will have to do a little research into Kagan and learn more bout it!

I found this book on my bookshelf! I have not read it but 2 years ago it was highly recommended to me. I took it off my shelf, and started to thumb through it. I will have to dig into this. My school starts in a couple of weeks, and I am a little slammed now, but I am very interested in learning more.

Kagan recommends using "Timed Think-pair-share" so that everyone can participate equally. I literally say 'partner A has 30 seconds to share while partner B listens.' After Partner B praises A for their idea/participation. Equal participation is the key. I time them with a timer. My friend LOVES Making Meaning! I am unfamiliar but sadly not available to me. I paid for my own Kagan training and highly recommend it :) Thanks again for your vids, you are really helpful! :)

Aren't these programs wonderful?? I just posted about my guided reading/daily 5 routine in my primary grade 2/3 class, feel free to check it out :) I talk about a series of different word work and writing jobs, as well as activities you can do with your students during guided reading!
